The No Child Left Behind Act mandated that by school year 2013-2014, all students in public schools across the nation are to perform at the proficient level or higher in math. The specific problem addressed in the present study was low measures of students' math achievement in one Mississippi school district. Prior research suggested that math anxiety was a major factor that influenced students' math performances. Hypothesis 1 for this study stated there is a statistically significant negative relationship between seventh grade students' math anxiety scores and their math achievement scores. Hypothesis 2 stated there is not a statistically significant difference in measures of math anxiety between 7th grade boys and girls. Hypothesis 3 stated there is not a statistically significant difference in measures of math anxiety between Black and White 7th grade students. To test hypothesis 1, a correlation coefficient was computed using the Pearson Product-Moment Coefficient, also known as Pearson r. To test hypotheses 2 and 3, a t-Test was used to determine whether differences between the means for math anxiety for the two samples were significant. The results of this study indicate that math anxiety and math achievement are negatively related. As math anxiety increased, measures of math achievement decreased. The results of this study also suggest that math anxiety is a general concern for all students, in that there were no differences in measures of math anxiety between boys and girls or Black students and White students. It is very important that teachers take the time to identify students who have math anxiety so they can assist the students by implementing strategies and techniques to eliminate math anxiety for those students who may benefit with higher math achievement.

In their introduction to this book, Christopher Jencks and Meredith Phillips argue that eliminating the disparity would dramatically reduce economic and educational inequality between blacks and whites. Indeed, they think that closing the gap would do more to promote racial equality than any other strategy now under serious discussion. The book offers a comprehensive look at the factors that contribute to the test score gap and discusses options for substantially reducing it. Although significant attempts have been made over the past three decades to shrink the test score gap, including increased funding for predominantly black schools, desegregation of southern schools, and programs to alleviate poverty, the median black American still scores below 75 percent of American whites on most standardized tests. The book brings together recent evidence on some of the most controversial and puzzling aspects of the test score debate, including the role of test bias, heredity, and family background. It also looks at how and why the gap has changed over the past generation, reviews the educational, psychological, and cultural explanations for the gap, and analyzes its educational and economic consequences. Eight sections of college-algebra courses were administered the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) to determine levels of mathematics anxiety and the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) to determine levels of mathematical achievement. Results of the study suggest that journal-writing decreases levels of mathematics anxiety among students. In addition, the study suggests that males and females do not differ in terms of mathematical achievement. These finding are consistent with previous studies. However, the study also suggested that males and females report the same levels of mathematics anxiety and that journal-writing does not increase mathematical achievement. This is in contrast to previous published studies.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the reliability and validity of the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (AMAS; Hopko, Bare, & Hunt, 2003) and the Math Anxiety Scale - Revised (MAS-R; Bai, 2009) across race and gender as well as the extent to which race and gender predict learning math anxiety and math evaluation anxiety at both the secondary level, which includes middle and high school students, and the tertiary level, which includes college/university students. Cronbach's Alpha scores were compared across race and gender subsamples, confirmatory factor analyses were conducted for the theoretically aligned structures of the AMAS and MAS-R, multi-group confirmatory factor analyses were conducted across race and school level for the AMAS, and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted with learning math anxiety and math evaluation anxiety as predicted variables and race and gender as predicting variables. Findings from this study suggest that the AMAS and MAS-R are sufficiently reliable across race and gender subgroups, that the theoretical factor structure of the AMAS fits the data from this study, while that of the MAS-R does not, and that the AMAS is non-invariant across White/European American and Black/African American racial groups as well as secondary level and tertiary level students. Results of the hierarchical regression analysis indicate that race and gender are not predictive of learning math anxiety or math evaluation anxiety. Taken together, these results suggest that math anxiety may not be a significant factor in the development of differences in attrition and retention rates across race and gender in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs, but that the AMAS is a valid measure to use with Black/African American students, secondary level students, and tertiary level students. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined whether or not there were any significant differences between the anxiety and achievement levels of African-American students enrolled in College Algebra courses taught using traditional instruction methods and those taught using experiential learning, as used in The Algebra Project curriculum. The classes were taught for the same amount of time for one semester, using the two curricular methods, and student anxiety was measured prior to the course and immediately following the implementation of an experiential learning module. Additionally, student achievement on selected questions focusing on the functions unit from the midterm exam were collected and analyzed to determine any differences in achievement based upon gender and teaching method. This quantitative study utilized a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control-group design. A sample of 102 African-American students, 41 males and 61 females, from a medium-sized university in central Virginia was used, with 30 students in the experiential learning group and 72 in the traditional instruction group. Student anxiety was measured using the Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Anxiety Scale-Revised. A preliminary analysis of covariance was conducted to investigate differences in the anxiety levels of the experiential learning and traditional instruction groups. Student achievement was measured using scores on selected questions focusing on the functions unit from the common midterm exam and was analyzed using an independent samples t-test and a two-way analysis of variance.
