Book Synopsis Math is Precise, Period, vs. Math is Precise, Strings Attached by : William J. Adams

This book was released on 2010-01-18 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of my conclusion that current mathematics education, taken in total, is a disaster and that by sharing my experience and thoughts about teaching mathematics I might be helpful to colleagues, students, and others who are concerned about mathematics education to mitigate this state of affairs. Mathematics education disaster in what sense? No, it?s not in the sense that I believe insuffi cient attention is being given to number fundamentals. It has to do with the almost unanimously held erroneous view about the nature, precision, and infallibility of mathematics that we acquire from the current state of mathematics education. Current mathematics education does not prepare us for life in the 21st century, which requires an understanding of the mathematical modeling perspective, of what mathematics can do and its limitations, and an appreciation of the questions that should be considered to help us distinguish numbers that inform from those that deceive. If the wizards of Wall Street had a 21st century mathematics education, there is a good chance that they would not have put unquestioning faith in their value at risk math models and the fi nancial meltdown of 2008-09 would have been avoided, or at least softened. If the nation?s decision makers and the public at large were better educated about what questions to give thought to when numbers continually hurled at them are the basis for decision making, they would be less vulnerable to accepting faulty numbers and all of us would be less at risk to the consequences of bad decision making.

Book excerpt: What's happening at Kensington Manor? Join me, Mr. Peabody, Mrs. Kensington's favorite boarder, confidant, and self-appointed envoy, as I attempt to unravel the duality of mystery that consumes my hostess and lady-of-the-house. Mrs. Kensington, widowed since the turn of the century, gravitates toward the kindness of strangers to remediate her loneliness as she opens her Manor house for boarding. The garden district New Orleans mansion is soon filled with travelers and displaced individuals from far and near eager to reside within the once lavish residence. As Mrs. Kensington’s health and home spiral into decline. Questions arise: Who’s gonna care for Mrs. Kensington when she can no longer care for herself? What happened to her husband? Was he murdered? If so, who murdered Mr. Kensington? Where was the gold fortune allegedly in his possession prior to his death? Did the fortune of gold exist at all? Does it remain housed within the safe behind the portrait that hangs on the wall just above the mantle in the grand dining hall there in the manor house on the Kensingston estate? This is the basis of my investigation as I search for clues, evidence, and suspects in an attempt to solve the mystery of ‘Schrodinger’s Gold.’
Book Synopsis Making Presentation Math Computable by : André Greiner-Petter
Download or read book Making Presentation Math Computable written by André Greiner-Petter and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open-Access-book addresses the issue of translating mathematical expressions from LaTeX to the syntax of Computer Algebra Systems (CAS). Over the past decades, especially in the domain of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), LaTeX has become the de-facto standard to typeset mathematical formulae in publications. Since scientists are generally required to publish their work, LaTeX has become an integral part of today's publishing workflow. On the other hand, modern research increasingly relies on CAS to simplify, manipulate, compute, and visualize mathematics. However, existing LaTeX import functions in CAS are limited to simple arithmetic expressions and are, therefore, insufficient for most use cases. Consequently, the workflow of experimenting and publishing in the Sciences often includes time-consuming and error-prone manual conversions between presentational LaTeX and computational CAS formats. To address the lack of a reliable and comprehensive translation tool between LaTeX and CAS, this thesis makes the following three contributions. First, it provides an approach to semantically enhance LaTeX expressions with sufficient semantic information for translations into CAS syntaxes. Second, it demonstrates the first context-aware LaTeX to CAS translation framework LaCASt. Third, the thesis provides a novel approach to evaluate the performance for LaTeX to CAS translations on large-scaled datasets with an automatic verification of equations in digital mathematical libraries. This is an open access book.

Book Synopsis Competitive Math for Middle School by : Vinod Krishnamoorthy
Download or read book Competitive Math for Middle School written by Vinod Krishnamoorthy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 39 self-contained sections in this book present worked-out examples as well as many sample problems categorized by the level of difficulty as Bronze, Silver, and Gold in order to help the readers gauge their progress and learning. Detailed solutions to all problems in each section are provided at the end of each chapter. The book can be used not only as a text but also for self-study. The text covers algebra (solving single equations and systems of equations of varying degrees, algebraic manipulations for creative problem solving, inequalities, basic set theory, sequences and series, rates and proportions, unit analysis, and percentages), probability (counting techniques, introductory probability theory, more set theory, permutations and combinations, expected value, and symmetry), and number theory (prime factorizations and their applications, Diophantine equations, number bases, modular arithmetic, and divisibility). It focuses on guiding students through creative problem-solving and on teaching them to apply their knowledge in a wide variety of scenarios rather than rote memorization of mathematical facts. It is aimed at, but not limited to, high-performing middle school students and goes further in depth and teaches new concepts not otherwise taught in traditional public schools.
