Book excerpt: Although the struggles of Latino students across the educational pipeline have been well studied, sociohistorical changes brought about by the introduction of digital technology and policy changes have created new layers of inquiry that demand further investigation of this phenomenon. This case study examined Latino(a) high school students' experience in a technology-integrated math college placement exam prep class. Data was collected using one-on-one interviews, focus groups, and an open-ended online questionnaire. The participants' descriptions of their experience in this class provided insights that revealed previously unacknowledged strengths of students with a history of struggling with math, outlined the daily routines that became more meaningful because of the integration technology, generated new knowledge about how the use of technology transformed the student-teacher and student-student relationships and supported the growth of college-going skills, and provided new knowledge about how limited understanding of the role of college placement exams can limit educational opportunity. Seven recommendations to increase institutional responsibility were provided. These were focused on increasing collaboration between high schools and higher education institutions to provide overwhelming support for students with the highest needs.

On average, these students perform worse than Anglo students on measures of academic achievement and other measures of academic success, and their drop-out rate is high. There are schools of excellence among those serving Latino children, but the majority of these children are placed "at risk" by schools and community institutions unable to build on the cultural, personal, and linguistic strengths these children are likely to bring with them to school. Schools serving Latino students need programs based on high-quality research, capable of being replicated and adapted to local circumstances and needs. The purpose of this book is to present the current state of the art with respect to research on effective instructional programs for Latino students in elementary and secondary grades. Surprisingly, this has not been done before; there are many books on the situation of Latino students in U.S. schools, but none so far have reviewed research on the outcomes of programs designed to enhance the academic achievement of these students. The chapters represent a broad range of methodologies, from experimental to correlational to descriptive, and the solutions they propose are extremely diverse. Each examines, in its own way, programs and practices that are showing success. Together, they present a rich array of research-based effective programs that are practical, widely available, and likely to make a profound difference. What binds the chapters together is a shared belief that Latino students can succeed at the highest levels if they receive the quality of instruction they deserve, and a shared belief that reform of schools serving many Latino students is both possible and essential. This is a book filled with statistics, description, and reviews of research--but even more, it is filled with optimism about what schools for Latino students can be, and what these students will achieve. It is a highly relevant and useful resource for educators, policymakers, and researchers who want to use research to inform the decisions they make about how to help Latino students succeed in elementary and secondary schools, and beyond.

Book excerpt: The increase in the number of Hispanic students who have immigrated to the United States coupled with the advent of the No Child Left Behind Act has made a huge impression on the educational front. Finding ways to aid Spanish speaking students to be successful in content area classes as they grow their English skills is of great importance. Knowing the need to grow mathematics content, Spanish speaking English Language Learners are often put in mainstream classes. By doing so, the students are exposed to the mathematics content, but need supports to absorb and learn the concepts necessary for long term success in mathematics. This study, conducted in a small high school in southeastern Pennsylvania, examined the success of an in-school tutoring program for students whose first language was Spanish and who were enrolled in academic mathematics courses ranging from Algebra I-I through Algebra II. The student's achievement and attitude toward mathematics were examined for changes during the time that they were tutored. The results of this study indicate that there was a significant growth in scores, both marking period averages and standardized assessments, for those students who partook of the tutoring opportunities and a growth in personal confidence in relation to mathematics study. A marked decline in the students' perception of teacher's attitudes toward them was also noted. It is hoped that this study can contribute to the continued research on best practice for closing the mathematics achievement gap for Hispanic students.
