Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Many of these women are mothers whose depression negatively affects their parenting quality and the wellbeing of their children. Using Ordinary Least Squares regression and the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation (EHSRE) Study, this paper estimates the effect of maternal depression on parenting quality and child outcomes and examines the ability of Early Head Start participation to reduce the negative impact of maternal depression on parenting and child outcomes. The findings support the hypotheses that maternal depression negatively impacts parenting quality and child outcomes and that participation in Early Head Start compensates for part of the negative effect of maternal depression on children. Furthermore, the findings show that maternal educational attainment has a bigger impact than Early Head Start in increasing parenting quality and child wellbeing, as measured by child success on cognitive, social, and emotional assessments. These findings support policy interventions aimed at providing various types of mental health services to low-income parents, increasing participation in Early Head Start, and promoting maternal educational attainment.

Instruments such as the MMPI-2, the Rorschach, and the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Battery are widely used across many types of forensic evaluations, although the latter category of testing is particularly related to personal injury evaluations. The end result is a unique and indispensable reference: a comprehensive overview, within a single text, of prominent clinical assessment instruments widely used for forensic purposes and designed to facilitate the optimal use of clinical assessment instruments among psychologists who have undertaken the training necessary to understand and apply psychological principles and test findings to salient legal standards or issues.

We hope to receive empirical papers that give evidence for the usefulness of attachment assessment in both clinical (e.g., patients with Eating Disorder; or Axis-II; psychotherapy patients…) or not clinical population (e.g. Adoptive and/or foster families or couples, Mother-infant assessment in prevention field…). These papers should include methodological issues and information about the participants, the methods used to assess attachment, the process of scorer training and the availability of the manual used to obtain inter-scorer reliability. Case studies may be of interest to the extent that they demonstrate the value of a systematic approach to attachment material. A range of theoretical perspectives is welcome as well presentation of new emergent tools on attachment. Because Frontiers in Psychology is an international journal, each empirical paper should comment on the international implications of the findings and discuss its cross-cultural use. Such comments may include, for example, its linguistic specificity, its robustness in translation, and the cross-cultural generalizability of the constructs and behaviors of the measure and its usual correlates.
