The primary goal of Advanced Mechanics of Composite Materials is the combined presentation of advanced mechanics, manufacturing technology, and analysis of composite materials. This approach lets the engineer take into account the essential mechanical properties of the material itself and special features of practical implementation, including manufacturing technology, experimental results, and design characteristics. Giving complete coverage of the topic: from basics and fundamentals to the advanced analysis including practical design and engineering applications. At the same time including a detailed and comprehensive coverage of the contemporary theoretical models at the micro- and macro- levels of material structure, practical methods and approaches, experimental results, and optimisation of composite material properties and component performance. The authors present the results of more than 30 year practical experience in the field of design and analysis of composite materials and structures. * Eight chapters progressively covering all structural levels of composite materials from their components through elementary plies and layers to laminates * Detailed presentation of advanced mechanics of composite materials * Emphasis on nonlinear material models (elasticity, plasticity, creep) and structural nonlinearity

Book excerpt: Military use of advanced polymer matrix composites (PMC)â€"consisting of a resin matrix reinforced by high-performance carbon or organic fibersâ€"while extensive, accounts for less that 10 percent of the domestic market. Nevertheless, advanced composites are expected to play an even greater role in future military systems, and DOD will continue to require access to reliable sources of affordable, high-performance fibers including commercial materials and manufacturing processes. As a result of these forecasts, DOD requested the NRC to assess the challenges and opportunities associated with advanced PMCs with emphasis on high-performance fibers. This report provides an assessment of fiber technology and industries, a discussion of R&D opportunities for DOD, and recommendations about accelerating technology transition, reducing costs, and improving understanding of design methodology and promising technologies.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of development of composite materials is quite unique in the scientific world with simultaneous advances being made both in their usage and basic understanding. The complexity and high technology required in manufacturing structural parts with these materials as well as the need for fundamental description of their processing and property characteristics necessitates a close col laboration between industrial and academic researchers. This col laboration has become significant not only in solving specific tech nical problems, but in providing a much needed supply of scientists with training and background focused on anticipated demand for further advances in composite usage. The fact that the transportation industry with its current international character has a vital interest in composite materials for weight savings applications has provided a strong incentive for extending these developments beyond national boundaries. An excel lent example of an established international venture is the building of the new generation commercial aircraft by the Boeing Company with composite parts manufactured by Aerita1ia in Italy. Accordingly, we organized a Joint U. S. -Italy Symposium on Composite Materials in Italy which was successfully held on June 15-19, 1981, under the primary sponsorship of NSF in the U. S. A. and CNR in Italy. The strong support we also received from industrial co-sponsors, both from Italy and the U. S. A. , as well as our respective academic insti tutions gave us confidence that we were addressing a timely and important area in Science and Engineering with a unique concept.

Book excerpt: Materials Science and Engineering theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Physical Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Materials Science and Engineering is concerned with the development and selection of the best possible material for a particular engineering task and the determination of the most effective method of producing the materials and the component. The Theme with contributions from distinguished experts in the field, discusses Materials Science and Engineering. In this theme the history of materials is traced and the concept of structure (atomic structure, microstructure and defect structure) and its relationship to properties developed. The theme is structured in five main topics: Materials Science and Engineering; Optimization of Materials Properties; Structural and Functional Materials; Materials Processing and Manufacturing Technologies; Detection of Defects and Assessment of Serviceability; Materials of the Future, which are then expanded into multiple subtopics, each as a chapter. These three volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial neural networks (ANN) can provide new insight into the study of composite materials and can normally be combined with other artificial intelligence tools such as expert system, genetic algorithm, and fuzzy logic. Because research on this field is very new, there is only a limited amount of published literature on the subject. Compiling information from diverse sources, Composite Materials Technology: Neural Network Applications fills the void in knowledge of these important networks, covering composite mechanics, materials characterization, product design, and other important aspects of polymer matrix composites. Light weight, corrosion resistance, good stiffness and strength properties, and part consolidation are just some of the reasons that composites are useful in areas including civil engineering and structure, chemical processing, management, agriculture, space study, and manufacturing. ANN has already been used to carry out design prediction, mechanical property prediction, and selection processes in the evolution of composites, but although it has already been used with great success in various branches of scientific and technological research, it is still in the nascent stage of its development. Featuring contributions from leading researchers throughout the world, this book is divided into four parts, starting with an introduction to neural networks and a review of existing literature on the subject. The text then covers structural health monitoring and damage detection in composites, addresses mechanical properties, and discusses design, analysis, and materials selection. Training, testing, and validation of experimental data were carried out to optimize the results presented in the book. This book will be an important aid to researchers as they work on the future implementation of ANN in industries such as aerospace, automotive, marine, sporting goods, furniture, and electronics and communication.
