Não se atendo somente a números, dirige suas atenções a particularidades específicas do pensamento de estudantes de classe média/alta. Aqui o leitor se depara com uma ideologia presente em nossa sociedade, mas que terá como palco a sala de aula. Os protagonistas: alunos de 7o e 8o anos oriundos das chamadas classes privilegiadas. As tradições que perpetuam o jogo de classes e suas discrepâncias podem depender também daquilo que se transmite nas aulas; podem estar atreladas à maneira pela qual se ensina e se aprende Matemática. A Matemática vista, tratada e ensinada, em nosso mundo chamado ocidental, como portadora e caminho da Verdade. E essa Verdade pode ser tranquilizadora para quem aprende sobre o mundo em que vive. Contida na Matemática, essa Verdade surge, no mundo ocidental desde a mente dos chamados pensadores pré-socráticos, passando pelo platonismo — que estrutura a relação entre a Matemática e o verdadeiro do mundo —, o pensamento moderno, até chegar às salas de aula contemporâneas. Sutilmente ou não, a Matemática vai perpassando as visões de realidade de nossos estudantes, contribuindo para não perceberem com clareza contradições imensas no mundo, entre elas a injustiça social. Descartando as evidências numéricas acerca da realidade, nossos alunos parecem recolher dos saberes matemáticos o subsídio à tecnologia e às finanças, não se questionando acerca da realidade social. Uma pesquisa de doutorado do professor João Luiz Muzinatti, que agora se torna livro, contou com alunos de 12 e 13 anos de uma escola particular de São Paulo. A partir de dados produzidos em salas de aula, Muzinatti nos apresenta três episódios narrativos fictícios, nos quais nos apresenta o professor Lucas e seu estagiário Armando. Ambos nos trarão observações, críticas e indagações de nossos alunos de Matemática. Embasado pela Educação Matemática Crítica, o autor discute os episódios no sentido de compartilhar com o leitor a suspeita de que valores, convicções, possíveis questionamentos, mitos e uma considerável passividade quanto às injustiças sociais podem estar sendo transmitidos (pelos educadores) também aos alunos de classes mais favorecidas do ensino fundamental, em aulas de Matemática.
