Book excerpt: Ten laws of simplicity for business, technology, and design that teach us how to need less but get more. Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design—guidelines for needing less and actually getting more. Maeda—a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer—explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on. Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple." Maeda's concise guide to simplicity in the digital age shows us how this idea can be a cornerstone of organizations and their products—how it can drive both business and technology. We can learn to simplify without sacrificing comfort and meaning, and we can achieve the balance described in Law 10. This law, which Maeda calls "The One," tells us: "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful."

Oliver Wendell Holmes. Crafting a simple life would be easy if getting rid of stress and clutter was all that simplicity seekers sought, but it isn't; we alos seek success. We long to create results that matter in our lives, work, and relationships. However, by defining simplicity as a solution to life's stress and complexity, many approaches point us toward relief rather than results. Because relief is usually temporary, we often oscillate between simplicity and success without realizing either. At best, the simplicity we achieve is the simplicity on this side of complexity. Simplicity and Success: Creating the Life You Long For will help you go beyond merely getting rid of what you don't want. It will help you discover what you love and create a life that shows it. It will help you integrate conflicting desires by shifting your focus from solving problems to creating what matters. It will empower you to embrace life's complexity, appreciate its richness, and move through its often chaotic "messiness" to the deep, lasting and fulfilling simplicity on the other side of complexity. Driven by vision, grounded in reality, and focused on results that matter, this simple yet powerful approach will help you simplify your life, achieve the success you long for, and feel energized, authentic and whole.

Book excerpt: Mastering selfoften desired, seldom achieved, and easier said than done. It is an arduous, lifelong process of becoming. A journeynot a destination. A directionnot perfection. A disciplinenot a diversion. Mastering self does not naturally exist in the human condition. It must be cultivated by lifelong learning. Mastering Self is for critical thinkers wanting to become what they should be. It provides: • a paradigm to clarify your core ethos and code of conduct; • a template to evaluate your fundamental beliefs, principles, and values; • a lens to view your world; • a grid to filter your thoughts, decisions, and actions; • a linchpin to stabilize your life; • a blueprint to comprehend your bearing in lifes journey and destination; and • a benchmark to measure significance in your life. Mastering Self presents relevant principles and commentary applicable to leading self and others. Understanding them strengthens interpersonal relationships. Embracing them increases personal influence. Practicing them benefits anyone responsible for other people. A comprehensive reference for leaders, this handbook is based on timeless truths and virtues for reference, reflection, or contemplative study. It provides a biblical worldview for perspective and old-school insight for todays culture. Mastering Self includes two primers with commentary, white papers regarding issues in life, the authors Scot heritage influence, and memoirs. The primers are written from a practitioners perspective gained from twenty-four years leading three police departments, teaching command officers at police academies, and teaching leadership at a university. The white papers juxtapose personal worldview and ethos with Gods Word and manner of living. They reveal a deep conviction that God counsels and confides in those who fear Him (Ps. 25:14) and honors those who honor Him (1 Sam. 2:30). These papers result from reading, teaching, writing, and pondering to keep my heart with all diligence regarding issues in life (Prov. 4:23)often in the counsel chamber of God. This work is a labor of love and pertains to lifes ultimate question: God or self?

By explaining what these teachings reveal about decision-making, professional relationships, personal targets and positivity, it challenges some of our deepest-held assumptions and forces us to unlearn many ideas that inform our current ideas on professional success. John Vincent and Julian Hitch challenge our ingrained assumptions about success and achievement to to guide us through a path of self-cultivation using the eight wisdoms of Wing Tsun. John Vincent, the co-founder of LEON, has applied these mantras to his healthy fast- food empire with enormous success.
