Book excerpt: Marlee Bruno has been an emergency medicine physician assistant for eight years. She is a poet, a blogger, a meditator, and a life coach. She knows all the lyrics to "Dear Mama" by Tupac and "Juicy" by Notorious B.I.G. She was the first girl in the tenth grade to adorn her back with a tramp stamp. She was on the "Highest Honors" honor roll list every year during elementary school until her bitch third grade teacher gave her a B in Physical Education after Marlee got her mini skirt stuck in the wheels of a scooter causing her to show the entire class her Winnie the Pooh underwear and lose the scooter race. It was a traumatic event. She has not been on a scooter since. I know what you're thinking. "Who wears a mini skirt in third grade PE class?" I invite you to come along on the amazing, fucked-up adventure that is my life.

Things get even harder when Edgar’s macho father returns home after months away, and the house erupts into fighting and simmering tension. Edgar worries what would happen if he told his father the truth about who he is, and feels he’ll never fit in anywhere. Then Edgar runs into Alex, a popular football player at school. But falling in love is more complicated than Edgar can ever imagine--and coming out might destroy the only life he’s ever known.

Download or read book 5 Easy Pieces written by Daniel Pauly and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 5 Easy Pieces features five contributions, originally published in Nature and Science, demonstrating the massive impacts of modern industrial fisheries on marine ecosystems. Initially published over an eight-year period, from 1995 to 2003, these articles illustrate a transition in scientific thought—from the initially-contested realization that the crisis of fisheries and their underlying ocean ecosystems was, in fact, global to its broad acceptance by mainstream scientific and public opinion. Daniel Pauly, a well-known fisheries expert who was a co-author of all five articles, presents each original article here and surrounds it with a rich array of contemporary comments, many of which led Pauly and his colleagues to further study. In addition, Pauly documents how popular media reported on the articles and their findings. By doing so, he demonstrates how science evolves. In one chapter, for example, the popular media pick up a contribution and use Pauly’s conclusions to contextualize current political disputes; in another, what might be seen as nitpicking by fellow scientists leads Pauly and his colleagues to strengthen their case that commercial fishing is endangering the global marine ecosystem. This structure also allows readers to see how scientists’ interactions with the popular media can shape the reception of their own, sometimes controversial, scientific studies. In an epilog, Pauly reflects on the ways that scientific consensus emerges from discussions both within and outside the scientific community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Sabbath's Master of Reality has maintained remarkable historical status over several generations; it's a touchstone for the directionless, and common coin for young men and women who've felt excluded from the broader cultural economy. John Darnielle hears it through the ears of Roger Painter, a young adult locked in a southern California adolescent psychiatric center in 1985; deprived of his Walkman and hungry for comfort, he explains Black Sabbath as one might describe air to a fish, or love to an android, hoping to convince his captors to give him back his tapes.

Book Synopsis Pieces of the Frame by : John McPhee
Download or read book Pieces of the Frame written by John McPhee and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pieces of the Frame is a gathering of memorable writings by one of the greatest journalists and storytellers of our time. They take the reader from the backwoods roads of Georgia, to the high altitude of Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico; from the social decay of Atlantic City, to Scotland, where a pilgrimage for art's sake leads to a surprising encounter with history on a hilltop with a view of a fifth of the entire country. McPhee's writing is more than informative; these are stories, artful and full of character, that make compelling reading. They play with and against one another, so that Pieces of the Frame is distinguished as much by its unity as by its variety. Subjects familiar to McPhee's readers-sports, Scotland, conservation-are treated here with intimacy and a sense of the writer at work.

Download or read book Time Pieces written by Virginia Hamilton and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newbery Medalist Virginia Hamilton presents a novella that brings together the slave past and multi-generational present life of a young girl in Ohio. From picking berries with her cousins to surviving a tornado to being dissed by a white, bigoted teacher, the daily life of Valena is drawn here with quiet dignity. Time Pieces are places in time, including chapters moving back to Hamilton's autobiographical family story of her grandfather's escape from slavery in Virginia, when he was brought to Ohio by his mother, a native American. A strong work of fiction from a master storyteller.
