Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: In this new book, a variety of European researchers and scholars present their most current and interesting research in the field of geragogics--the European term for gerontological education and educational gerontology. These professionals forward the concept of "geragogics" to open readers'minds and eyes to streams of geragogics research that have often been neglected in the U.S. Geragogics examines the history, scope, principles, and practice of geragogics, and defines some of the kinds of work that are being conducted in the field in Europe. It suggests new and exciting areas for research and promotes a new integration of gerontological education and educational gerontology, encouraging readers to move beyond the disciplinary and research conventions which have limited exploitation of the field. This state-of-the-art report on European research makes an exciting and informative volume. Along with a comprehensive overview of the field of geragogics, chapters in this book cover topics such as: the effects of participation in third age universities motivations for continuing education in old age measuring the working ability of aging workers driving education for the elderly educational approaches to serving elderly immigrants comparative life values of European and American elderly Academics and researchers in gerontological education and educational gerontology and professionals involved in international aging, European immigrant elderly, and programs of education and employment for the elderly will find this book a valuable addition to the literature. Geragogics is a thought-provoking journey through fields and perspectives often ignored in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the phenomenon known as “unreliable narration” or “narrative unreliability” has received a lot of attention during the last two decades, narratological research has mainly focused on its manifestations in narrative fiction, particularly in homodiegetic or first-person narration. Except for film, forms and functions of unreliable narration in other genres, media and disciplines have so far been relatively neglected. The present volume redresses the balance by directing scholarly attention to disciplines and domains that narratology has so far largely ignored. It aims at initiating an interdisciplinary approach to, and debate on, narrative unreliability, exploring unreliable narration in a broad range of literary genres, other media and non-fictional text-types, contexts and disciplines beyond literary studies. Crossing the boundaries between genres, media, and disciplines, the volume acknowledges that the question of whether or not to believe or trust a narrator transcends the field of literature: The issues of (un)reliability and (un)trustworthiness play a crucial role in many areas of human life as well as a wide spectrum of academic fields ranging from law to history, and from psychology to the study of culture.

Like no other research tool the electron microscope by the brothers Ernst and Helmut Ruska and their brother-in-law Bodo von Borries marks the dawn of modernity. Their avant-garde idea of 1931 to examine under a microscope with electrons has expanded human vision until today. The world's first commercial overmicroscope for discoveries in the world of the smallest followed in Berlin 1939. 1948 the German development and application of overmicroscopy was revived in Düsseldorf. As a key instrument of research it has completed a triumphant march and it has won the attention of the Nobel Prize Committee for awards twice. 1986 the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded for the invention of the Berlin electron microscope. 2017 the Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded for the sharp electron-optical imaging of fragile biomolecules through the modern application of low temperature. This book traces the way of electron microscopy along with its inventors from Berlin to Düsseldorf.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television was one of the forces shaping the cultural revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, when a blockbuster TV series could reach up to a third of a country’s population. This book explores television’s impact on social change by comparing three sitcoms and their audiences. The shows in focus – Till Death Us Do Part in Britain, All in the Family in the United States, and One Heart and One Soul in West Germany – centered on a bigoted anti-hero and his family. Between 1966 and 1979 they saturated popular culture, and managed to accelerate as well as deradicalize value changes and collective attitudes regarding gender roles, sexuality, religion, and race.

Book excerpt: This volume unravels the debates on the »Participation Age«: Instead of perpetuating visions of social »all-inclusion« or the »digital divide«, the collection reclaims collectivity as an effect of technological and historical conditions. Thinking of participation both as promise and duty, the contributions analyse the attractions and impositions connected to the socio-technical formation of collectivities. The constraints of participation are addressed by focusing on the mutual shaping of user practices and technological environments. It is hence a relational thinking that allows specifying the manifold interconnections of technology, practices and discourses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of language ideologies has become a key theme in sociolinguistics over the past decade. It is the study of the relationship between representations of language, on the one hand, and broader aesthetic, economic, moral and political concerns, on the other. Research into the particular role played by media discourse in the construction, reproduction and contestation of such ideologies has been widely scattered - this book brings together this emerging field. It considers how, in an era of global communication technologies, the media - by which we understand the press, radio, television, cinema, the internet and multimodal gaming - help to disseminate preferred uses of, and ideas about, language. The book is tightly focussed on the relationship between language ideologies and media discourse, together with the methods and techniques required for the analysis of that relationship. It also places emphasis on television and new-media texts, incorporating and expanding upon recent theoretical insights into visual communication and multimodal discourse analysis. International in scope, this book will also be of interest to students from a wide range of fields including linguistics (particularly sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology), modern languages, education, media studies, communication studies and cultural theory.

Book excerpt: This book departs from the premise that political discourse is intrinsically connected with media discourse, as shaped by its cultural and transcultural characteristics. It presents a collection of papers which examine political discourse in the media from a cross-culturally comparative perspective in Arab, Dutch, British, Finnish, Flemish, French, German, Israeli, Swedish, US-American and international contexts. By using different theoretical frameworks, such as conversation analysis, discourse analysis, pragmatics and systemic functional linguistics, the papers reflect current moves in political discourse analysis to cross-disciplinary and methodological boundaries by integrating semiotics, particularly multimodality, cognition, context, genre and recipient design.
