Book excerpt: Magnesium, with a density of 1.74 g/cm2, is the lightest structural metal and magnesium are increasingly chosen for weight-critical applications such as in land-based transport systems. "Magnesium Technology" substantially updates and complements existing reference sources on this key material. It assembles international contributions from seven countries covering a wide range of research programs into new alloys with the requisite property profiles, i.e., the current state of both research and technological applications of magnesium. In particular, the international team of authors covers key topics, such as: casting and wrought alloys; fabrication methods; corrosion and protection; engineering requirements and strategies, with examples from the automobile, aerospace, and consumer-goods industries, and recycling. This authoritative reference and overview addresses materials researchers as well as design engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of stress analysis has gained its momentum from the widespread applications in industry and technology and has now become an important part of materials science. Various destructive as well as nondestructive methods have been developed for the determination of stresses. This timely book provides a comprehensive review of the nondestructive techniques for strain evaluation written by experts in their respective fields. The main part of the book deals with X-ray stress analysis (XSA), focussing on measurement and evaluation methods which can help to solve the problems of today, the numerous applications of metallic, polymeric and ceramic materials as well as of thin-film-substrate composites and of advanced microcomponents. Furthermore it contains data, results, hints and recommendations that are valuable to laboratories for the certification and accreditation of their stress analysis. Stress analysis is an active field in which many questions remain unsettled. Accordingly, unsolved problems and conflicting results are discussed as well. The assessment of the experimentally determined residual and structural stress states on the static and dynamic behavior of materials and components is handled in a separate chapter. Students and engineers of materials science and scientists working in laboratories and industries will find this book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a topic of interest to a wide range of people from various backgrounds: engineers and technicians, legal academics and lawyers, economists and business practitioners. The two conferences on the issue held in 2000 and 2002 in Berlin, Germany, brought these people together for fruitful discussions. This book continues this process by providing insights into the three main areas that DRM in?uences and that DRM is influenced by: technology, economics, and law and politics. Looking at the first results of the two conferences we would like to emphasize three aspects. Firstly, DRM is a fairly young topic with many issues still - resolved. Secondly, there is still an acute lack of objective information about DRM and the consequences of using (or not using) DRM in our Information Society. And, finally, only open discussions amongst all the interested parties and people from different scientific and practical backgrounds can help to create a foundation on which DRM can actually become useful.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering structures for reliable function and safety have to be designed such that operational mechanical loads are compensated for by stresses in the components bearable by the materials used. Vhat is "bearable"? First of all it depends on the properties of the chosen materials as well as on several other parameters, e.g. temperature, corrosivity of the environment, elapsed or remaining serviceable life, unexpected deterioration of materials, whatever the source and nature of such deterioration may be: defects, loss of strength, embrittlement, wastage, etc. DEFECTS and PROPERTIES of materials currently determine loadability. Therefore in addition to nondestructive testing for defects there is also a need for nondestructive testing of properties. The third type of information to be supplied by nondestructive measurement pertains to STRESS STATES under OPERATIONAL LOADS, i.e. LOAD-INDUCED plus RESIDUAL STRESSES. Residual stresses normally cannot be calculated; they have to be measured nondestructively; well-approved elastomechanical finite element codes are available and used for calculating load-induced stresses; for redundancy and reliability, engineers, however, need procedures and instrumentation for experimental checks.

Book excerpt: Shot peening has been proved to be a powerful instrument in enhancing the resistance of materials to various kinds of stress-induced damage, particularly against damage due to cyclic loading (fatigue) in air or in aggressive environments. As shot peening can be used for a wide variety of structural components irrespective of shape and dimensions, the number of shot peening applications in many industrial branches is increasing. The use of peen forming as a technique to form large metal parts into complicated shapes is also increasing, particularly in the aerospace industry. The Conference covers all aspects of the Science, Technology and Application of Shot Peening, and was intended to attract users, manufacturers as well as scientists working in the field of "Materials Treatment by Shot Peening". Emphasis was put on the current state of knowledge and research. This book offers scientists and engineers an unique opportunity to update their knowledge on shot peening.

Book excerpt: With contributions from over 20 leading scholars from across the globe, this new book brings together a number of papers that have been presented at the annual International Labour Process Conference, at which the conference theme 'Working Revolutions: Revolutionising Work' provided the inspiration for many of the chapters included in this volume. Grounded in Labour Process Theory, the text examines how digital technologies impact on work and organisations and provides a rigorous account of the technological, organizational and work related changes in both the new digital industries and in the traditional service and manufacturing sectors. The book covers many of the most significant contemporary issues and subjects in the field, including the representation of women in IT, workplace cyberbulling, virtualisation and the video games industry. This book is essential reading for upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate students studying modules related to technology and work, as well as modules in work sociology on sociology degree programmes.
