Book excerpt: Announcing a new volume of Pfleger/Maurer/Weber: Mass Spectral and GC Data of Drugs, Poisons, Pesticides, Pollutants and Their Metabolites. Unmatched in scope, quality and reliability, this collection is the result of a unique effort. Part 4 of this famous reference work contains – 2000 new mass spectra (more than 6300 in Part 1–4) – data of nearly all the new drugs relevant to clinical and forensic toxicology, doping control, food chemistry, etc. – nearly complete coverage of trimethylsilylated, perfluoroacylated, perfluoroalkylated and methylated compounds – data revision of already published volumes in this second edition – updated sections on sample preparation and GC–MS methods – tables covering all the data of Parts 1–4 with directions as to page and volume on/in which the data can be found as well as the appropriate entry numbers of the electronic versions (tables listed by names and categories). The complete set of Part 1–4 now comprises more than 6300 mass spectra and reaches far beyond the needs of clinical and forensic toxicologists. The inclusion of pesticides and pollutants makes this data collection invaluable for environmental chemists, occupational toxicologists and food analysts, too. The data of the supplement volume will also be provided as an up–grade of the computer libraries (PMW—TOX3) by producers of mass spectrometers, e.g., Hewlett Packard, Finnigan (MAT, CE, Automass), Shimadzu and Varian.

Book excerpt: It is estimated that there are about 10 million organic chemicals known, and about 100,000 new organic compounds are produced each year. Some of these new chemicals are made in the laboratory and some are isolated from natural products. The structural determination of these compounds is the job of the chemist. There are several instrumental techniques used to determine the structures of organic compounds. These include NMR, UV/visible, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. Of all the instrumental techniques listed, infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry are the two most popular techniques, mainly because they tend to be less expensive and give us the most structural information. This book is an introductory text designed to acquaint undergraduate and graduate students with the basic theory and interpretative techniques of mass spectrometry. Much of the material in this text has been used over a period of several years for teaching courses in materials characterization and chemical analysis. It presents the mass spectra of the major classes of organic compounds and correlates the fragmentation pattern of each spectrum with the structural features of the compound it represents. This has been done for hydrocarbons, organic acids, ketones, aldehydes, esters, anhydrides, phenols, amines, and amides. The text discusses the origin of the fragments, techniques, innovations, and applications in mass spectrometry. It is interspersed with many illustrations, examples, an adequate but not overwhelming bibliography, and problems for students. It will serve as a lecture text for a one-semester course in mass spectrometry or can be used to teach the mass spectra portion of a broader course in material characterization and chemical analysis.

Book excerpt: Advanced Component Identification in Complex Mixtures Essential oils are mixtures consisting of monoterpene andsesquiterpene hydrocarbons, their oxygenated derivatives, andaliphatic oxygenated compounds. The difficulties that arise in theGC-MS peak identification of these complex samples is due to thefact that many terpenes have identical mass spectra. This is aconsequence of similarities both in the initial molecule, or in thefragmentation patterns and rearrangements after ionization. Hence,MS identification of these compounds should always be accompaniedby retention time information that may support the MS librarysearch results. This innovative MS library for natural and synthetic products(essential oils, perfumes, etc.) makes the identification ofunknown compounds in complex mixtures easier, faster and morereliable. The use of chromatographic information, such as LinearRetention Index (LRI), can be used to filter MS results, enablingthe more reliable peak assignment of components in complexmixtures. Mass spectra, relative to standard and well-known simple matrixcomponents, were obtained and recorded through GC-MSseparation/identification. Furthermore, traditional informationrelative to each component (CAS number, common name, CAS name, molecular weight, compound formula, chemical class) plus linearretention index values are entered. Flavors and Fragrances of Natural and Synthetic Compounds,3rd edition contains >3000 mass spectra, LRI retentiondata, calculated Kovats RI, and searchable chemical structures ofcompounds of interest for the flavors and fragrances industry.Prepared by the Prof. Luigi Mondello under rigorous measurementconditions, the mass spectral library contains compounds central toflavor and fragrance research. Book excerpt: The world's most comprehensive reference for forensic toxicologists is keeping pace with recent developments in clinical toxicology in its new release: Another 800 new spectra have been added to this gold standard, including novel designer drugs and a broad range of AIDS therapeutics, for a total of 8,650 clinically relevant substances, including 5,200 metabolites. The print edition contains a comprehensive listing of all compounds in order of molecular mass, showing a reference mass spectrum as well as structural formula, exact masse, GC retention times and numerous other experimental data that are relevant to the analytical toxicologist. To aid in compound identification, all substances are classified according to their toxicological categories. In addition to the mass spectral and GC data for almost 9000 substances, the two volumes contain an overview on experimental methods, plus compound indices by name and substance category. A truly unique collection of data obtained over the course of almost three decades. Praise for the previous editions: "An invaluable source of reference for any environmental, toxicological or analytical laboratory." (Rapid Communications in MS) "The excellent organization of the information facilitates their everyday use. Highly recommended." (Environmental Science and Pollution Research) "The modern toxicological laboratory can ill afford to be without this unique work." (Veterinary Human Toxicology)

All instrumental aspects of mass spectrometry are clearly and concisely described: sources, analysers and detectors. Tandem mass spectrometry is introduced early on and then developed in more detail in a later chapter. Emphasis is placed throughout the text on optimal utilisation conditions. Various fragmentation patterns are described together with analytical information that derives from the mass spectra. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated and has been redesigned to give the book a more contemporary look. As with previous editions it contains numerous examples, references and a series of exercises of increasing difficulty to encourage student understanding. Updates include: Increased coverage of MALDI and ESI, more detailed description of time of flight spectrometers, new material on isotope ratio mass spectrometry, and an expanded range of applications. Mass Spectrometry, Third Edition is an invaluable resource for all undergraduate and postgraduate students using this technique in departments of chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacology, agriculture, material science and food science. It is also of interest for researchers looking for an overview of the latest techniques and developments.

Book excerpt: Metabolomics, the global characterisation of the small molecule complement involved in metabolism, has evolved into a powerful suite of approaches for understanding the global physiological and pathological processes occurring in biological organisms. The diversity of metabolites, the wide range of metabolic pathways and their divergent biological contexts require a range of methodological strategies and techniques. Methodologies for Metabolomics provides a comprehensive description of the newest methodological approaches in metabolomic research. The most important technologies used to identify and quantify metabolites, including nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry, are highlighted. The integration of these techniques with classical biological methods is also addressed. Furthermore, the book presents statistical and chemometric methods for evaluation of the resultant data. The broad spectrum of topics includes a vast variety of organisms, samples and diseases, ranging from in vivo metabolomics in humans and animals to in vitro analysis of tissue samples, cultured cells and biofluids.

After presenting the principles of identification and metrological basics, the author focuses on the reliability and the errors of chemical identification. This is then applied to practical examples such as EPA methods, EU, FDA, or WADA regulations. Two whole chapters are devoted to the analysis of unknowns and identification of samples such as foodstuffs or oil pollutions. Essential reading for researchers and professionals dealing with the identification of chemical compounds and the reliability of chemical analysis.
