Book excerpt: Since its opening in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge has become an icon for the beauty and prosperity of the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as a symbol of engineering achievement. Constructing the bridge posed political and financial challenges that were at least as difficult as those faced by the project's builders. To meet these challenges, northern California boosters created a new kind of agency: an autonomous, self-financing special district. The Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District developed into a powerful organization that shaped the politics and government of the Bay Area as much as the bridge shaped its physical development. From the moment of the bridge district's incorporation in 1928, its managers pursued their own agenda. They used all the resources at their disposal to preserve their control over the bridge, cultivating political allies, influencing regional policy, and developing an ambitious public relations program. Undaunted by charges of mismanagement and persistent efforts to turn the bridge (as well as its lucrative tolls) over to the state, the bridge district expanded into mass transportation, taking on ferry and bus operations to ensure its survival to this day. Drawing on previously unavailable archives, Paying the Toll gives us an inside view of the world of high-stakes development, cronyism, and bureaucratic power politics that have surrounded the Golden Gate Bridge since its inception.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Western History Association's 2009 Hal K. Rothman Award Finalist in the Western Writers of America Spur Award for the Western Nonfiction Contemporary category (2008). The San Francisco Bay Area is one of the world's most beautiful cities. Despite a population of 7 million people, it is more greensward than asphalt jungle, more open space than hardscape. A vast quilt of countryside is tucked into the folds of the metropolis, stitched from fields, farms and woodlands, mines, creeks, and wetlands. In The Country in the City, Richard Walker tells the story of how the jigsaw geography of this greenbelt has been set into place. The Bay Areas civic landscape has been fought over acre by acre, an arduous process requiring popular mobilization, political will, and hard work. Its most cherished environments--Mount Tamalpais, Napa Valley, San Francisco Bay, Point Reyes, Mount Diablo, the Pacific coast--have engendered some of the fiercest environmental battles in the country and have made the region a leader in green ideas and organizations. This book tells how the Bay Area got its green grove: from the stirrings of conservation in the time of John Muir to origins of the recreational parks and coastal preserves in the early twentieth century, from the fight to stop bay fill and control suburban growth after the Second World War to securing conservation easements and stopping toxic pollution in our times. Here, modern environmentalism first became a mass political movement in the 1960s, with the sudden blooming of the Sierra Club and Save the Bay, and it remains a global center of environmentalism to this day. Green values have been a pillar of Bay Area life and politics for more than a century. It is an environmentalism grounded in local places and personal concerns, close to the heart of the city. Yet this vision of what a city should be has always been informed by liberal, even utopian, ideas of nature, planning, government, and democracy. In the end, green is one of the primary colors in the flag of the Left Coast, where green enthusiasms, like open space, are built into the fabric of urban life. Written in a lively and accessible style, The Country in the City will be of interest to general readers and environmental activists. At the same time, it speaks to fundamental debates in environmental history, urban planning, and geography.

A few days with the first F-104 Fighter Squadron (83 FIS) at Hamilton Air Force Base in California, I sensed the tremendous excitement and beauty and compelling force that makes men want to fly these planes. This I felt, was interwoven with an aloneness that was complete in itself. - Woodi Ishmael.

Book excerpt: CORRUPTION IS EVERYWHERE Near San Francisco, a small town is riddled with bad cops and cocaine dealers MILL VALLEY sits nestled in the shadow of the Sleeping Princess Mountain in southern Marin County and, at first glance, appears to be a quiet, tranquil little town populated by rock stars, writers, and artists. But a closer look reveals a dark side: corruption has reached the top levels of the police department, and white powder cocaine is the locals drug of choice. Sean Patrick Murphy, nicknamed Rooster by his supervising sergeant, Dante John Castigari, is a burnt-out Irish cop on a rampage on San Franciscos skid row. He carries a Badge, Gun, and Heartache, but all he ever wanted was to be a country singer. But so far, that doesnt seem to be in the cards. The year is 1978. But the story begins in Mill Valley, early in 1973: Sergeant Castigari hates dope dealers and dirty cops. So does Murphy, but his passion to become a country singer soon starts to interfere with his commitment to protect and serve. When Castigari plunges into the dangerous business of cleaning up the town and eradicating the Colombian Drug Cartel from their stronghold, Rock Star Hell, Murphy has to decide among his music, his job, and his mentor. The corruption and greed start to take a toll on everybody involved, including Murphys girlfriend, the sultry singer Peggy Sue Barnes. Then Murphy is offered immortality with a record contractbut not without a price. Soon Castigari is asking, Are you pulling pistols or strumming guitars? Its down to the wire, but Murphy has already made up his mind. Now its a waiting game, and both the cops and the Colombians await Roosters next move.

Book excerpt: In this entirely sophisticated and scholarly account of political culture, Arthur Asa Berger shows how the variety of cultural preferences creates the foundations of communication theory. Using the work of Aaron Wildavsky, the author shows how individualism, egalitarianism, collectivism, and fatalism form the basis of culture in complex societies. But more importantly, Berger breaks down the mechanical distinction between mass culture and elite culture, showing how they interpenetrate and crossover at the level of competitive and hierarchical frames. Agitpop, now in paperback, suggests that there is an ideological content to our popular culture, even though the creators no less than the consumers of that culture are either unaware or dimly aware that they are creating works with an ideological bent. The work takes up in quick order two examples from different areas of the hierarchical, individualist, egalitarian, and fatalist cultures. From football games to the Iran-Contra Hearings, from MTV to the Human Potential Movement, from Max Headroom to humor on the Jews, and from wrestling to The Terminator, Berger takes up his master themes with a deft touch of his own. Weaving in the work of scholars from Emile Durkheim to Aaron Wildavsky he manages to make each of the chapters very much his own. For those who know the earlier work of this author, the reader will be very much at home; for those new to Berger, the volume will be a joyous revelation. The final three chapters reveal a deeper aspect of Berger's work. His interpretation of the earlier materials in terms of the semiotics of power, of textual analysis, or deconstruction of the media, and finally, an analysis and self-analysis of the larger research agenda of which this work is pivotal, should make this book central to the theoretical construction of popular and political culture. For people working in communications theory, political culture, and the sociology of knowledge, this book is a must; for everyone els

Book excerpt: Marin County's spectacular Pacific coast has been noted as both one of the most beautiful locations on earth and--for some early mariners--a place of absolute terror. The rocky coast here has claimed hundreds of ships and the lives of thousands of sailors. Though long known for its beautiful natural settings of woodlands, beaches, and hills, Marin's maritime history is surprisingly varied, with tales of English pirates, Spanish explorers, Yankee whalers, and an immense wartime shipbuilding effort. The rocky seascapes and sandy beaches of Point Reyes, Bolinas, and Stinson Beach--along with the bay-side villages of Sausalito, Tiburon, and San Rafael--have long been important ports for commercial and pleasure mariners.

Book excerpt: Retired after thirty-plus years in law enforcement, Tony DiGiusto, newly licensed private investigator, was looking forward to a quiet and uneventful retirement investigating simple everyday civil cases for local attorneys from an office in the sleepy and affluent hamlet of Sausalito, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Little did Tony know that his first major clients-a pair of twins who had hired his uncle, a well-known San Francisco attorney, to investigate a property ownership dispute-would lead him to investigate the sudden and unexplained death of his uncle in a small Northern California town. Tony becomes entangled in a complex and horrendous investigation that will lead him from San Francisco to the charming and picturesque towns of the Sierra Gold Rush areas. The investigation into his uncle's death leads Tony and his live-in girlfriend, Gina Rosetti, into a nightmarish web of terror and murder involving long-forgotten Nazi activities in California and almost costs Tony and Gina their lives. California's colorful capital, Sacramento, and its legislative bodies play an unwitting part in this fast-paced and intriguing glimpse into a madman's plan for a new Third Reich.
