Book excerpt: This book provides a clear guide for practitioners looking to establish or already conducting research projects in a practice context and graduate students looking to support their studies and role within practice. The book is divided into three key sections. The first section, across Chapters Two and Three, discusses why research is relevant to practice, how it benefits both practice and their clients, the breadth of topics, and tackles the key challenges facing research in practice and discusses how to overcome them, including how to fund research in practice. Section two, across Chapters Four to Seven, focuses on the mechanics of a research project, providing a step-by-step guide to reviewing literature and publications, data collection and research methods, ethics, writing up and publishing. In the final section, Chapter Eight presents profiles of twelve architecture practices ranging in size, structure, location, research interest and approach, followed by illustrated profiles of their design influenced research work. The practices featured here are Counterspace Studio, ZCD Architects, Baca Architects, Tonkin Liu, Pomeroy Studio, Architecture Research Office, Architype, Gehl Architects, Hayball, PLP Architects, White Arkitekter and Perkins&Will. With practice based examples throughout, beautifully illustrated and written in a clear and accessible style, this is an essential guide to conducting research that is relevant for architectural practices of all size, location and expertise.

Book excerpt: With the global population projected to reach 9 billion by the year 2050, the need for nations to secure food supplies for their populations has never been more pressing. Finding better supply chain solutions is an essential part of achieving a secure and sustainable diet for a rapidly increasing population. We are now in a position, through methods including life cycle assessment (LCA), carbon footprinting and other tools, to accurately measure and assess our use – or misuse – of natural resources, including food. The impact of new technologies and management systems can therefore improve efficiencies and find new ways to reduce waste. Global Food Security and Supply provides robust, succinct information for people who want to understand how the global food system works. The book demonstrates the specific tools available for understanding how food supply works, addresses the challenges facing a secure and safe global food supply, and helps readers to appreciate how these challenges might be overcome. This book is a concise and accessible text that focuses on recent data and findings from a range of international collaborations and studies. The author provides both a snapshot of global food supply and security today, and a projection of where these issues may lead us in the future. This book will therefore be of particular interest to food policy leaders, commercial managers in the food industry, and researchers and students seeking a better understanding of a rapidly evolving topic.

When clever young sleuth Miss Juliette Abbott is invited to spend a fortnight at Martindale Manor as companion to a young blind girl whose father has suddenly passed away, she believes she has been offered the perfect respite from murder and mayhem in the tiny hamlet of Martindale in England's far-away North Country. Told that the girl’s brother and heir, Sir James Martindale, is even now on his way home, Miss Abbott and her trusted maid Tilda set out in high spirits for their four-day journey north. However, upon arriving in Cumbria, Juliette is shocked to learn that the murders have already begun! Miss Martindale’s father did not simply pass away; the man was viciously murdered! What’s worse, Juliette soon begins to suspect that the late Sir Robert’s killer, the very man who arrived at Martindale Manor proclaiming to be the long lost heir is not the person he claims to be! Readers will identify the villain at once . . . but the questions swirling around the hated man’s actions remain hidden from view until Miss Abbott bravely takes on the task of ferreting out the reasons why the stranger seems intent upon doing away with any and everyone who dares dispute his claim as heir. Poor blind Miss Martindale is of no help, so it falls to our clever sleuth Miss Abbott to keep Miss Martindale’s presence a secret from the man claiming to be her brother. Even as the dead bodies pile up, Juliette learns that her name now sits at the top of the ruthless killer’s list! Although she summons help, she wonders if her trusted friend Mr. Sheridan will arrive in time to save them all from the killer’s trap? “A tension-filled page turner! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adirondack hamlet of Winslow Station is transformed by the unexpected return of its solitary prodigal child. When a successful New Yorker returns to her birthplace in the Adirondack Mountains to escape her publicly tragic life, she begins to find peace for the first time since she was five years old. Hired as a caretaker for an Adirondack Great Camp, she spends over ten years living alone. But Lily Martindale’s days as a recluse are plagued by a secret which aggravates her fragile state of mind. On a winter day in the 1990s, deep in the mountains, she opens fire on a military flyover. Lily, once again, is a person of interest in the press, to the public, and now to the FBI—not an enviable position for a hermit. The Adirondack hamlet of Winslow Station is transformed by the unexpected return of its solitary prodigal child. She is driven to confront her own isolation, years of sadness, and her deteriorating health. She also finds something, and someone, she never expected to see again. “Mary Sanders Shartle has created an unforgettable character in her female hermit, subtly evoking the diverse moods of our North Country seasons along the way. This well-paced first novel kept me riveted from the poetic opening paragraphs to the unexpected conclusion. The Truth and Legend of Lily Martindale has all the makings of an Adirondack classic.” — Bibi Wein, author of The Way Home: A Wilderness Journey “What to make of Lily Martindale? In this poignant tale of a woman whose heart remains, for both better and worse, in an idyllic Adirondack childhood while she is buffeted by the storms of adolescence and adulthood, Mary Sanders Shartle has given us a deeply moving and penetrating portrait of human memory, longings, and motivations. Shartle’s thorough knowledge of Adirondack social, political, architectural, and natural history allows her to paint a convincing picture of diverse people, their environments, and their interactions, from the ‘Great Camp’ set to natives of remote northern pockets of the park. Will Lily ever retrieve the love and happiness she knew as a child? Perhaps only a raven knows for sure.” — Neal Burdick, coeditor of The Adirondack Reader: Four Centuries of Adirondack Writing, 3rd Edition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theorizing lesbian, Kathleen Martindale writes, is like embarking on terra incognita. In this book, Martindale offers her lucidly written analysis as a guide through the complex and provocative terrain of lesbian literary and cultural theory. Using the publication of Adrienne Rich's Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence and the outbreak of the American sex wars as a starting point, Martindale traces the emergence of lesbian postmodernism and how lesbian-feminism changed from a popular to an un/popular culture and from a political vanguard into a cultural neo-avant garde. Martindale analyzes the theoretical implications of "creative" texts such as the graphic art and cultural commentary of Alison Bechdel and Diane DiMassa. She experiments in autobiography by Joan Nestle, and deconstructed lesbian genre fiction by Sarah Schulman to determine how these texts elaborate contemporary theoretical issues. These texts, she argues, are widely available and could be considered as postmodernist rewritings and revisions of the most characteristic and preferred lesbian-feminist modes of cultural expression. Her analysis raises poignant questions about how lesbians read, what they read, and what counts as lesbian theory. She concludes with a discussion of the status of queer pedagogy in academic institutions and what measures need to be taken to promote and safeguard its existence in what are often homophobic educational settings.

Book excerpt: What determines the evolution of styles in poetry, painting, music, and architecture? Are there universal laws of art history to which even Shakespeare, Beethoven, and Picasso were subject? In this highly original and provocative book, cognitive psychologist Colin Martindale challenges conventional theories that seek to explain changes in the arts as the result of political, religious, or social forces. "Social forces do not cause change in art; they distort it," he writes. Martindale argues that it is the pressure for novelty that shapes individual artistic careers and trends, whether in literature, music, or the visual arts....Through the use of computer models and experimental simulations, Martindale explores the psychological factors involved in producing novel responses and he traces the stylistic changes that derive from this need for novelty.--Book jacket.
