Book Synopsis Pioneers, Passionate Ladies, and Private Eyes by : Larry E Sullivan
Download or read book Pioneers, Passionate Ladies, and Private Eyes written by Larry E Sullivan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite efforts of contemporary reformers to curb the availability of dime novels, series books, and paperbacks, Pioneers, Passionate Ladies, and Private Eyes reveals how many readers used them as means of resistance and how fictional characters became models for self-empowerment. These literary genres, whose value has long been underestimated, provide fascinating insight into the formation of American popular culture and identity. Through these mass-produced, widely read books, Deadwood Dick, Old Sleuth, and Jessie James became popular heroes that fed the public’s imagination for the last western frontier, detective tales, and the myth of the outlaw. Women, particularly those who were poor and endured hard lives, used the literature as means of escape from the social, economic, and cultural suppression they experienced in the nineteenth century. In addition to the insight this book provides into texts such as “The Bride of the Tomb,” the Nick Carter Series, and Edward Stratemeyer’s rendition of the Lizzie Borden case, readers will find interesting information about: the roles of illustrations and covers in consumer culture Bowling Green’s endeavor to digitize paperback and pulp magazine covers bibliographical problems in collecting and controlling series books the effects of mass market fiction on young girls Louisa May Alcott’s pseudonym and authorship of three dime novels special collections competition among publishers A collection of work presented at a symposium held by the Library of Congress, Pioneers, Passionate Ladies, and Private Eyes makes an outstanding contribution to redefining the role of popular fiction in American life.
Book Synopsis Disciplined Dissent by : Autori Vari
Download or read book Disciplined Dissent written by Autori Vari and published by Viella Libreria Editrice. This book was released on 2017-01-03T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by current debates around political confrontation and the exercise of power, Fabrizio Titone offers an interpretation based on the concept of disciplined dissent. This interpretation is centred on the notion of diffused power and is designed to transcend the binary distinction consensus/resistance. The aim is to identify the conservative process involved in mounting a critique, a protest, through which those who object may have intercepted and then deployed on their own account the cultural repertoire of those in a position of authority. This was with a view to obtaining a hearing, or even influencing the activities of the government and decentering the exercise of power. The essays collected here take as their theoretical point of departure the concept of disciplined dissent. In order to ascertain how adaptable the latter is, the decision was taken to include studies relating to wholly distinct political contexts. Contributions by scholars from different backgrounds shed light upon different circumstances prevailing in continental and non-continental medieval Europe. The aim is to offer a broad spectrum of analyses on political confrontation, the formulation of critiques and the attainment of spaces for participation by means of non-violent protest.
Book Synopsis Disciplining Girls by : Joe Sutliff Sanders
Download or read book Disciplining Girls written by Joe Sutliff Sanders and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of some of the most beloved children’s novels is a passionate discussion about discipline, love, and the changing role of girls in the twentieth century. Joe Sutliff Sanders traces this debate as it began in the sentimental tales of the mid-nineteenth century and continued in the classic orphan girl novels of Louisa May Alcott, Frances Hodgson Burnett, L. M. Montgomery, and other writers still popular today. Domestic novels published between 1850 and 1880 argued that a discipline that emphasized love was the most effective and moral form. These were the first best sellers in American fiction, and by reimagining discipline as a technique of the heart—rather than of the whip—they ensured their protagonists a secure, if limited, claim on power. This same ideal was adapted by women authors in the early twentieth century, who transformed the sentimental motifs of domestic novels into the orphan girl story made popular in such novels as Anne of Green Gables and Pollyanna. Through close readings of nine of the most influential orphan girl novels, Sanders provides a seamless historical narrative of American children’s literature and gender from 1850 until 1923. He follows his insightful literary analysis with chapters on sympathy and motherhood, two themes central to both American and children’s literature, and concludes with a discussion of contemporary ideas about discipline, abuse, and gender. Disciplining Girls writes an important chapter in the history of American, women’s, and children’s literature, enriching previous work about the history of discipline in America.

Download or read book Women on the Land written by Carol Twinch and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women on the Land tells the remarkable story of women's contribution to agriculture and forestry during the two World Wars. It traces the formation and history of the Women's Land Army, and shows how women, mostly untrained and from non-farming backgrounds, helped maintain food production for a beleaguered nation, by filling the places of men away at the war. At the height of the First World War the Land Army had a full-time membership of 23,000 members, a number that was to exceed 80,000 during the Second World War. The book pays tribute to women like Lady Denman, who administered the Land Army during the Second World War and who was its chief inspiration and driving force, and also outlines the part played by other women's groups in wartime. Containing many first-hand reminiscences by the women who served, and a number of evocative illustrations, Women on the Land highlights the years when women were effectively to challenge long-established preconceptions as to what properly constituted 'women's work'.

Book excerpt: Barbara is a physician and pianist. Margo is a brilliant mathematician and cellist. Lucia is a philosopher, nun, and violinist. These amateur but talented and accomplished musicians have met to celebrate the silver jubilee of their Vows. This year the plan was to play, in its entirety, the music that brought them together and made them sisters in heart and mind for life: Tchaikovsky's Trio in A minor for Violin, Cello, and Piano; and they played it as never before! Barbara and Margo had never heard Lucia play as she did this time. Her violin sang with perfect intonation, controlled breathing, and redeeming passion, but after the performance, Lucia confesses to being found in a situation unbecoming to a nun. She is pregnant! Though she denies having been with a man, the facts confirm that her vows as a nun were violated and that she may have lied. Bound by the promise of trust, faith, and truth the three shared, Barbara and Margo had believed Lucia. Now they must ask themselves if their faith was unwarranted. Or could Lucia be telling the truth?

Book Synopsis Women and Public Space in Turkey by : Selda Tuncer
Download or read book Women and Public Space in Turkey written by Selda Tuncer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey's process of `modernization' developed rapidly during the second half of the twentieth century. New social and legal reforms were institutionalized and political and economic changes located the country as a more liberated, `Western-style' society. Women and Public Space in Turkey provides a historical understanding of women's experiences of this modernization between 1950 and 1980, a vital period in which their participation in urban public life expanded through higher education and employment. Selda Tuncer examines the precise conditions that enabled women to leave the home and reveals how they perceived and experienced urban public space and social relations. Drawing on interviews with two generations of women from Ankara, and using personal family photographs, the book provides invaluable insights into women in a predominantly Muslim society who are living in a highly secular social context. Tuncer specifically focuses on women's everyday experiences and discusses how the relationship between women and public space was actually controlled and regulated by different notions of `domestication', especially in the micro-politics of daily life. The book sheds new light on the gendered processes of nation-building, socio-cultural transformations, and the crucial connections between gender, modernity and the urban experience in a non-Western context.
