They fought in every battle in their new home; the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Korean War and WWI andWW2. Amongst them was John Sevier, originally Xavier from France, his father and uncle stowed away on board a ship and came to the Americas before the Revolution. John Sevier became a leading member of the new westward movement and in 1784 petitioned Congress to create the State of Franklin out of property in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.
Book Synopsis The Weems of Abbeville, South Carolina by : Diana J. Muir
Download or read book The Weems of Abbeville, South Carolina written by Diana J. Muir and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least five different Weems men settled on Long Cane Creek in Abbeville County, South Carolina before the Revolutionary War. Even today there are Weems living in Abbeville County, both white and black. For years, genealogists have been confused about who is the son of whom, but land records make it clear that '4' men; Thomas (Eleanor) Weems, Redfearn Weems, Thomas (and Elizabeth) Weems, and Henry Weems all were granted land on Long Cane Creek. While the county lines have changed dramatically over the years, Long Cane Creek remained a constant. It was here that thousands of Weems descendants, both black and white, call home. Today, DNA evidence is slowly dividing the different Weems children into family groups. Included here, are the descendants of each of those identified children; regardless of who their parent(s) was. There is most certainly missing information, errors in dates and places, and misspellings. Feel free to scribble on your book and make your corrections, and additions.

Book Synopsis Winston County, Alabama Confederate Soldiers by : Robin Sterling
Download or read book Winston County, Alabama Confederate Soldiers written by Robin Sterling and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about men who joined the Federal Army from the so-called Hill Country in Alabama which included Winston County. Little has been written about the men who enlisted from Winston in the Confederacy. Surprisingly, the number of Winston County Confederates almost matched the number of those who supported the Union. Many important Confederate officers hailed from Winston County. The book begins with an essay describing the Forgotten Winston County Confederates. Following is an alphabatized list of all Confederate soldiers associated with Winston County including those that moved in after the war. Information includes service records, pension applications, birth, marriage, and death information. The book is filled with rare photos and obituaries. Additional information includes articles on Captain White's Mail Guard and the Winston County Rough and Ready Volunteers. Full name index. This book is important to students of Winston County History.
Book Synopsis Ship Island, Mississippi by : Theresa Arnold-Scriber
Download or read book Ship Island, Mississippi written by Theresa Arnold-Scriber and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ship Island was used as a French base of operations for Gulf Coast maneuvers and later, during the War of 1812, by the British as a launching point for the disastrous Battle of New Orleans. But most memorably, Ship Island served as a Federal prison under the command of Union Major General Benjamin F. Butler during the Civil War. This volume traces this fascinating and somewhat sinister history of Ship Island. The main focus of the book is a series of rosters of the men imprisoned. Organized first by the state in which the soldier enlisted and then by the company in which he served, entries are listed alphabetically by last name and include information such as beginning rank; date and place of enlistment; date and place of capture; physical characteristics; and, where possible, the fate and postwar occupation of the prisoner.

Book Synopsis ALONG THE WAY by : Robert Louis Taylor
Download or read book ALONG THE WAY written by Robert Louis Taylor and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written to provide a genealogical account of my family history. There was a driving need to tell this story for the benefit of all of my family, but mostly for my children, Megan, Nicole, Natalie & Robbie, my two step-sons, Marc and Paul and all of those who will come after them. Many hours, weeks, months and years searching the genealogical archives of the Mormon Temple, countless interviews, many trips to grave sites, monuments, and travels to far away places, went into this writing. To give an account of a family's genealogy can be a most complex and daunting task. The research alone can be overwhelming. I have tried to provide the reader with as much detail and accuracy as possible. My intent was to structure this book in a manner that will serve as a reference for those family members, and others as well, who might have the need and interest in knowing the ancestry of those denoted in this writing. The major portion of this book is based on written documentation. However, some of its content is based on verbal accounts and may be subject to some error. For this I sincerely apologize and welcome any and all corrections. Many thanks and great appreciation to my mother, (Rev. Dr. Allie Mae Bellar-Allen), my stepfather, (Lloyd Christopher Allen), my uncle, (Clarence Knox Taylor), my brother in law, Dale Bonzo Etrata and all the other, for sharing their wealth of knowledge concerning the family histories represented in this book. Thanks for taking the time to share it with me. Above all, I must thank my wife, (Rita Teresa) for her support and understanding; the years and years of listening to me pour over data and digging up the past. She has heard me go over data from my research, recalling events names and places so much that she knows them better than I do. My deepest gratitude to you all, and to you all I dedicate this book. Many thanks to Dr. Allen for the many stories and accounts of her pass that inspired me to write this book. Without her I would never have begin the research that led to this writing.

Book Synopsis Rambles of a Runaway from Southern Slavery by : Henry Goings
Download or read book Rambles of a Runaway from Southern Slavery written by Henry Goings and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rambles of a Runaway from Southern Slavery tells of an extraordinary life in and out of slavery in the United States and Canada. Born Elijah Turner in the Virginia Tidewater, circa 1810, the author eventually procured freedom papers from a man he resembled and took the man’s name, Henry Goings. His life story takes us on an epic journey, traveling from his Virginia birthplace through the cotton kingdom of the Lower South, and upon his escape from slavery, through Tennessee and Kentucky, then on to the Great Lakes region of the North and to Canada. His Rambles show that slaves were found not only in fields but also on the nation’s roads and rivers, perpetually in motion in massive coffles or as solitary runaways. A freedom narrative as well as a slave narrative, this compact yet detailed book illustrates many important developments in antebellum America, such as the large-scale forced migration of enslaved people from long-established slave societies in the eastern United States to new settlements on the cotton frontier, the political-economic processes that framed that migration, and the accompanying human anguish. Goings’s life and reflections serve as important primary documents of African American life and of American national expansion, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. This edition features an informative and insightful introduction by Calvin Schermerhorn.
