Download or read book Marmaduke written by Flora Annie Steel and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flora Annie Steel (1847 – 1929) was an English writer who notably lived in British India for 22 years and is best remembered for her books set or related to the sub-continent. Steel's 1917 historical novel “Marmaduke” offers the reader a glimpse into colonial India that is typical of her fiction, weaving a delicate story to the backdrop of British imperialism in an exotic land. An entertaining and insightful novel, this book is highly recommended for those with an interest in India's history and will not disappoint those who have read and enjoyed other works by this author. Also by this author: “Tales of the Punjab” (1894), “The Flower of Forgiveness” (1894), and “The Potter's Thumb” (1894). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

He just doesn't fit in, however much he wants to, and so he feels terribly lonely. And Princess Meg? Well, she wears trainers and breaks into dance at the most inappropriate of times, which means that she sticks out like a sore thumb. She doesn't really have any friends, but then she's far too busy having fun to notice . . . Until one day when Marmaduke and Meg's lives collide in the most exciting, brilliant and surprising way and they both realise just how much they need each other. And, who knows, maybe a princess and a dragon will make the most perfect best friends. Brilliantly read by Lenny Henry. Book Synopsis Mr. Marmaduke and the Minister ('The Mystery of Marmaduke') by : Wilkie Collins
Download or read book Mr. Marmaduke and the Minister ('The Mystery of Marmaduke') written by Wilkie Collins and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-04-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Wilkie Collins was originally published in 1878. Born in Marylebone, London in 1824, Collins' family enrolled him at the Maida Hill Academy in 1835, but then took him to France and Italy with them between 1836 and 1838. Returning to England, Collins attended Cole's boarding school, and completed his education in 1841, after which he was apprenticed to the tea merchants Antrobus & Co. in the Strand. In 1846, Collins became a law student at Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the bar in 1851, although he never practiced. It was in 1848, a year after the death of his father, that he published his first book, The Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A., to good reviews. The 1860s saw Collins' creative high-point, and it was during this decade that he achieved fame and critical acclaim, with his four major novels, The Woman in White (1860), No Name (1862), Armadale (1866) and The Moonstone (1868). The Moonstone, meanwhile is seen by many as the first true detective novel - T. S. Eliot called it "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels...in a genre invented by Collins and not by Poe." Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Book Synopsis Marmaduke Herbert; or, the Fatal Error by : Susanne Schmid
Download or read book Marmaduke Herbert; or, the Fatal Error written by Susanne Schmid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early and mid-nineteenth century, Marguerite Blessington, who had been born in Ireland but spent most of her life in London, became a famous salonnière; she was generally regarded as an important contemporary author, but as no literary executor took care of her oeuvre posthumously, she eventually moved into the background. Her novels, partly informed by the silver-fork genre, are typical examples of Romantic Victorianism, influenced by the Romantic cult of the solitary male self, by the fascination with Italy, and by the 1840s vogue of crime fiction, while simultaneously giving space to ambivalent reflections about Blessington’s own Irish background. This volume, as part of ‘Chawton House Library: Women’s Novels’ series, presents her 1847 novel Marmaduke Herbert; or, the Fatal Error, a highly popular piece of fiction in its day, being reprinted in German, French and American editions within a year of its publication.
