Book excerpt: The past ten years in South Africa has seen many changes in education - the creation of a single department of education; common examinations for all learners in public schools in the country, a new outcomes based education curriculum which was introduced to learners in the general education and training phase since 1998 and will be introduced to the further education and training phase from 2006. To evaluate the success of these changes South African researchers still use the indicator of student achievement. The matriculation examination is the visible, high profile and public performance indicator. Every year parents, learners, teachers, researchers, government officials, policymakers, and the general public get involved in the debate around the matric examination with the most frequently asked questions being - Did the pass rate go up? Are standards dropping? Are the results real or have they been manipulated? How is our education system doing? Are we meeting the development goals? What should the matriculation examination of the future look like? participants from government (national and provincial),

Book excerpt: A wide-ranging volume featuring contributions from some of today's leading thinkers and practitioners in the field of men, masculinities and development. Together, contributors challenge the neglect of the structural dimensions of patriarchal power relations in current development policy and practice, and the failure to adequately engage with the effects of inequitable sex and gender orders on both men's and women's lives. The book calls for renewed engagement in efforts to challenge and change stereotypes of men, to dismantle the structural barriers to gender equality, and to mobilize men to build new alliances with women's movements and other movements for social and gender justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very engrossing tale set during the British era. It is a fast moving narrative with humour and anecdotes of the Indian subcontinent and the British ruling class. The story revolves around an innocent heist carried out by a group of simple Indian soldiers to save their honour and in so doing a real life hero emerges who leads an attack successfully during World War II and puts an entire beach, in Indonesia, in the laps of his English masters. After the war he sweeps an heiress, who is a surviving passenger of the ill fated HMS Titanic, off her feet and into his arms. The misdemeanour enacted by the soldiers remains ensconced in secrecy for a decade and half. However, due to a string of circumstances, the perpetuaters are cajoled into revealing the misdeed during a drinking binge in a grand hotel setting in New Delhi ten years after India's independence in a chance encounter with their erstwhile pre-independence British officers. Since the mystery is revealed only in the last few pages of the book, the reader remains rivetted to the novel and is kept spellbound through out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights endorsed in 1948 by member states of the United Nations continues to remain very much valid as it provides the solid foundation for most actions and activities that are aimed at guaranteeing the rights of everybody. The rights enunciated in the Declaration are comprehensive and two that are relevant to the content of this book are the right to education and the right to learn. The right to education and the right to learn are known to have been hotly debated by politicians, policy makers, and implementers. Sometimes, the rights in question here have found their way into political parties’ manifestoes, and advocates oftherighttoeducation andtherighttolearnhavebeenquicktobringintojudgment politicians who have not lived up to their promises. Even at that, many member states of the United Nations have taken steps to ensure that access to learning is jealously guarded. For education and lifelong learning remain among the primary forces that can guarantee individual, community and national development, as they had always been from time immemorial. Globally, there has been ample evidence of efforts made by governments to p- mote the widening of access to participation in learning activities. Even so, the literature on the subject of access and participation has not captured suf ciently what has happened across the world in terms of providing access outside national boundaries in the context of globalization and the rapid creation of the knowled- based economies of the 21st century.
