Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which can be considered as a sequel of the author's famous book Character Theory of Finite Groups, concerns the character theory of finite solvable groups and other groups that have an abundance of normal subgroups. It is subdivided into three parts: -theory, character correspondences, and M-groups. The -theory section contains an exposition of D. Gajendragadkar's -special characters, and it includes various extensions, generalizations, and applications of his work. The character correspondences section proves the McKay character counting conjecture and the Alperin weight conjecture for solvable groups, and it constructs a canonical McKay bijection for odd-order groups. In addition to a review of some basic material on M-groups, the third section contains an exposition of the use of symplectic modules for studying M-groups. In particular, an accessible presentation of E. C. Dade's deep results on monomial characters of odd prime-power degree is included. Very little of this material has previously appeared in book form, and much of it is based on the author's research. By reading a clean and accessible presentation written by the leading expert in the field, researchers and graduate students will be inspired to learn and work in this area that has fascinated the author for decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written specifically to address the library's role in education, this book provides guidance on performing assessment at academic institutions that will serve to improve teaching effectiveness and prove your library's impact on student learning outcomes—and thereby demonstrate your library's value. Academic libraries are increasingly being asked to demonstrate their value as one of many units on campus, but determining the outcomes of an academic library within the context of its collegiate setting is challenging. This book explains and clarifies the practice of assessment in academic institutions, enabling library managers to better understand and explain the impact of the library on student learning outcomes, teaching effectiveness, and research productivity. Providing essential information for all college and university librarians, this volume discusses and summarizes the outcomes of research that has been conducted to investigate assessment within the context of higher education. This updated second edition incorporates additional research, examines new trends, and covers groundbreaking advances in digital assessment tools as well as the changes in the amount and forms of data utilized in the assessment process. The chapters address assessment from a campus setting and present data that demonstrate the value of the library within that setting in terms of learning, research, and overall impact. In sum, the book presents librarians with up-to-date, practical guidelines for planning and conducting assessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before espionage entered the era of modern technology, there was the age of George Alexander Hill: a time of swashbuckling secret agents, swordsticks and secret assignations with deadly female spies. The daring escapades of some of the first members of Britain's secret service are revealed in this account of perilous adventure and audacious missions in Imperial and revolutionary Russia. First published in 1932, Hill's rip-roaring narrative recounts tales of his fellow operatives Arthur Ransome - author of Swallows and Amazons and one of the most effective British spies in Russia - and Sidney Reilly - so-called 'Ace of Spies' and architect of a thwarted plot to assassinate the Bolshevik leadership. Unavailable for decades, this lost classic offers fascinating portraits of a world unfathomable to those growing up against a backdrop of WikiLeaks and cyber espionage, and of true-life characters whose exploits were so extraordinary that they have entered the realm of legend.

Book excerpt: "This evocative study brings us back to the world of Buchan, 'Sapper' and Dornford Yates: the world of the British Empire, in which leisured London clubmen waged a peacetime Great Game of war against cads, crooks and beastly foreigners. The rules of the game were those of the public school, the stakes usually high--often Civilization itself. In these pages we can follow Hannay from Portland Place to Galloway and to the Black Sea, Bulldog Drummond from Mayfair to his last round, in the airship, with Carl Peterson, and Berry & Co from White Ladies in Hampshire to the Pyrenees and beyond. When it was first published, Clubland Heroes was recognized as a classic of its kind. This reissue--freshly revised and corrected in 1983--gives a new generation of readers the chance to meet the stift-upper-lip officer-class heroes of a bygone world."--Back cover.

He was born in London, and educated privately and in Italy. He studied painting in Paris. He was foreign editor of The Globe newspaper during the 1890s. He subsequently wrote professionally. The author, William le Queux (pronounced 'Q'), was one of the first creators of the spy story. A journalist-turned-author, he successfully combined his passionate interest in national security and new technological developments with his detailed knowledge of travel and high society in Europe, in these and other collections of short stories of intrigue and espionage. In 'Revelations of the Secret Service' he comments "Women are more successful as spies than men. That is why so many are employed by both Russia and France." - but our hero Hugh Morrice has the skill and charm to work with or through the wily and the innocent ladies he encounters on travels throughout Europe.
