A special session was devoted to theoretical aspects and future acti vi ties. Furthermore, special poster sessions were organized where original contributions were presented. This book presents the Proceedings of the Symposium including all review papers, presentations of research papers and extended versions of all posters. We believe that these Proceedings provide a good overview of the activities in this field in Europe. After restructuring the Concerted Action in 1984, particular attention has been devoted to fate and transformation of organic micropollutants in the aquatic environment. Bioremediation investigations were carried out using experimental designs. It is expected, through a better understanding of the decolorization mechanisms, to widen the available range of bioremediation tools.

Book excerpt: A distinction between contamination and pollution is useful when we wish to consider what strategies to adopt in researching the impact of anthropogenic activities on the marine environment. Contamination strictly refers to the chemical burden imposed on the system and is evaluated in terms of the concentrations of chemical compounds in various abiotic (e. g water, suspended particulate matter, sediments) and biotic (plant and animal, pelagic and benthic) components. The concept of pollution, on the other hand, infers an assessment of biological response to the measured levels of contamination. This response may be measured at various levels of biological organisation, from molecular events within the cell to changes in such ecosystem properties as nutrient flux and biological productivity. Such measures of biological response need not infer any value judgements regarding putative damage or disturbance to the natural systems, although the biologist will usually have in mind a reference point of normality with which to compare the measured response; departure from this "normality" may then provide a quantitiative index of disturbance. The challenge to scientists engaged in research into marine contamination and pollution is to weld the chemical and biological elements together (always with reference also to the physical features of the environment) so as to provide a coherent framework for the quantitative evaluation of environmental response.

The aim of the symposium was to review the progress and results achiev ed during the past two years, since the Second symposium, held in Killarney (Ireland) in November 1981. The programme of the symposium consisted of review papers covering dif ferent areas related to the analysis of the organic pollutants in water, in cluding sampling and sample treatment, gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and specific analytical problems for some types of compounds. We think that the volume gives a rather complete overview of these activities in Europe. Moreover, the paper presented by D. Hunt reviews the development of the new technique mass spectrometry - mass spectrometry in the United States of America. Some special sessions concerned the presentation of original contri butions in form of poster, the extended versions of which are published in this volume.
