Book excerpt: "A report on the first round of [a] major longitudinal survey on social cohesion in Australia has been released. The report, 'Mapping Social Cohesion', provides insights to community attitudes to immigration, multiculturalism and social cohesion. These are based on findings from specially-commissioned national and local surveys. Topics that are covered include: our sense of belonging, how happy we are, how satisfied we are financially, and how much we trust in politicians, public institutions and other people. The report also examines complex attitudes to immigration and multicultural society, including assistance to ethnic groups, and levels of discrimination. It also examines the degree of disaffection in our community."--Publisher website.

Download or read book Creating Social Cohesion in an Interdependent World written by Tetsuo Mizukami and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating Social Cohesion in an Interdependent World examines the ways in which two very different societies, Australia and Japan, have dealt with challenges to their cultural and institutional fabric, as well as the social cohesion arising from the acceleration of global interdependence during recent decades. Deepening globalization has generated great social dislocation and uncertainty about collective identity and to anxiety about how to accommodate apparently unstoppable external influences. The studies in this volume explore areas which have experienced significant impact from globalization, including immigration policy, ethnic and racial intermarriage, attitudes towards ethnic and racial minorities, national and cultural identity, education policy and labor relations. The approach used is innovative in juxtaposing two societies which, although developed, are contrasting in their historical origins and contemporary cultural legacies.

Book Synopsis Nation Formation and Social Cohesion by : MISTRA MISTRA
Download or read book Nation Formation and Social Cohesion written by MISTRA MISTRA and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2014-06-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nation Formation and Social Cohesion is the publication of a MISTRA research project that set out to examine different interpretations and meanings that diverse social actors attach to the calls and prospects for nation formation and social cohesion. The publication links theories of nation formation and social cohesion to actual practices, both focused on the attainment of a just society founded on the irreducible equality of all its members on the one hand, and the factors militating against achieving this, on the other. Ethnographic research in four provinces provides the substance or practice to the theoretical framing of the discourse. The study proceeds by interrogating the theoretical suppositions of nation formation and social cohesion and this serves as a starting point for a thorough reflection on these two processes. Thus a synthesis, and not a conceptual position is arrived at, where the interdependence of nation formation and social cohesion, specifically for postcolonial societies, (and South Africa in particular) can be interrogated effectively and critically. This publication, with contributors Andries Oliphant, Yacoob Abba Omar, Joel Netshitenzhe, Leslie Dikeni, Shepi Mati, Vincent Williams, Robert Gallagher and Feizel Mamdoo, is intended to add to the debate and stimulate new thinking around the diffcult processes that are being sought to build a nation in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration, Citizenship and Intercultural Relations reflects on the tensions and contradictions that arise within debates on social inclusion, arguing that both the concept of social inclusion and policy surrounding it need to incorporate visions of citizenship that value ethnic diversity. Presenting the latest empirical research from Australia and engaging with contemporary global debates on questions of identity, citizenship, intercultural relations and social inclusion, this book unsettles fixed assumptions about who is included as a valued citizen and explores the possibilities for engendering inclusive visions of citizenship in local, national and transnational spaces. Organised around the themes of identity, citizenship and intercultural relations, this interdisciplinary collection sheds light on the role that ethnic diversity can play in fostering new visions of inclusivity and citizenship in a globalised world.
Book Synopsis Public Space Design and Social Cohesion by : Patricia Aelbrecht
Download or read book Public Space Design and Social Cohesion written by Patricia Aelbrecht and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social cohesion is often perceived as being under threat from the increasing cultural and economic differences in contemporary cities and the increasing intensity of urban life. Public space, in its role as the main stage for social interactions between strangers, clearly plays a role in facilitating or limiting opportunities for social cohesion. But what exactly is social cohesion, how is it experienced in the public realm, and what role can the design of city spaces have in supporting or promoting it? There are significant knowledge gaps between the social sciences and design disciplines and between academia and practice, and thus a dispersed knowledge base that currently lacks nuanced insight into how urban design contributes to social integration or segregation. This book brings together scholarly knowledge at the intersection of public space design and social cohesion. It is based on original scholarly research and a depth of urban design practice, and analyses case studies from a variety of cities and cultures across the Global North and Global South. Its interdisciplinary, cross-cultural analysis will be of interest to academics, students, policymakers and practitioners engaged with a range of subject areas, including urban design, urban planning, architecture, landscape, cultural studies, human geography, social policy, sociology and anthropology. It will also have significant appeal to a wider non-academic readership, given its topical subject matter.

Book Synopsis Social Cohesion and Social Change in Europe by : Gerard Boucher
Download or read book Social Cohesion and Social Change in Europe written by Gerard Boucher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social cohesion has had different meanings for people depending on their background, their interests, where they live in the world, and at what time they lived. In the social sciences, social cohesion is a term used to explain the social and cultural consequences of structural changes related to industrialization and modernity. In the European Union, structural changes which relate to globalization, European integration, the restructuring of welfare states, ageing societies, and transitions from communism, have often led to more insecurity and material inequalities between people. Higher rates of immigration, and issues related to the integration of migrants and their descendants, have also led to anxieties about the preservation of national cultures and identities. This book argues that perceived crises in social cohesion in Europe have more to do with the consequences of structural change rather than the failure of multiculturalism and immigration. It looks at the relationship between social cohesion and social change in Europe, focusing on the European Union as a whole, and on urban areas such as Paris, France and Bradford, UK. This book was originally published as a special issue of Patterns of Prejudice.
Book Synopsis Contested Concepts in Migration Studies by : Ricard Zapata-Barrero
Download or read book Contested Concepts in Migration Studies written by Ricard Zapata-Barrero and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume demonstrates that migration- and diversity-related concepts are always contested, and provides a reflexive critical awareness and better comprehension of the complex questions driving migration studies. The main purpose of this volume is to enhance conceptual thinking on migration studies. Examining interaction between concepts in the public domain, the academic disciplines, and the policy field, this book helps to avoid simplification or even trivialization of complex issues. Recent political events question established ways of looking at issues of migration and diversity and require a clarification or reinvention of political concepts to match the changing world. Applying five basic dimensions, each expert chapter contribution reflects on the role concepts play and demonstrates that concepts are ideology dependent, policy/politics dependent, context dependent, discipline dependent, and language dependent, and are influenced by how research is done, how policies are formulated, and how political debates extend and distort them. This book will be essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners in migration studies/politics, migrant integration, citizenship studies, racism studies, and more broadly of key interest to sociology, political science, and political theory.
Book Synopsis Social Cohesion in the Western World by : Georgi Dragolov
Download or read book Social Cohesion in the Western World written by Georgi Dragolov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people in the Western world are concerned that the social fabric of societies is fraying. This book constitutes the first-of-its-kind systematic account of social cohesion, from theory through methodology to empirical evidence. Readers are introduced to the academically developed Social Cohesion Radar of Bertelsmann Stiftung, a globally active non-governmental organization. The Social Cohesion Radar defines and measures cohesion as characterized by three core aspects: resilient social relations, positive emotional connectedness between people and the community, and a pronounced focus on the common good. Using high-quality academic and institutional data sources, the Social Cohesion Radar provides insights into the level and development of social cohesion over a period of almost 25 years internationally, among 34 European Union and OECD members, and regionally, among the 16 federal states of Germany. It further provides insights into what influences cohesion, and what cohesion is good for. One of the key findings is that social cohesion promotes a happier life for everyone.
