Book excerpt: The weight savings potential, of graphite-epoxy composites for secondary and medium primary aircraft structures, was demonstrated. One of the greatest challenges facing the aircraft industry is to reduce the acquisition costs for composite structures to a level below that of metal structures. The pultrusion process, wherein reinforcing fibers, after being passed through a resin bath are drawn through a die to form and cure the desired cross-section, is an automated low cost manufacturing process for composite structures. The Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company (LASC) Composites Development Center designed, characterizated materials for, fabricated and tested a stiffened cover concept compatible with the continuous pultrusion process. The procedures used and the results obtained are presented. Meade, L. E. Unspecified Center...

Book excerpt: Modular panelized construction is a modern form of construction technique in which precast multifunctional structural panels are used. In this technique, precast panels are fabricated in the manufacturing facility and are transported to the construction site. Traditional structural insulated panels (SIPs) consist of oriented strand boards (OSB) as facesheets and expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam as the core. These panels are highly energy efficient but have issues in terms of poor impact resistance and higher life cycle costs. Proposed panels consist of E-glass/polypropylene (PP) laminates as facesheets and EPS foam as core and are called composite structural insulated panels (CSIPs). Proposed CSIPs overcome the issues of traditional SIPs and retain all the energy-saving benefits of the traditional SIPs. This chapter describes manufacturing techniques developed for CSIPs and connection details for bonding CSIPs on the construction site. Based on the experimental investigation, ultrasonic welding was found to be the most suitable technique for joining the proposed CSIPs.

Book excerpt: Pultrusion for engineers is a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and applications for this growing and increasingly important area of the fibre reinforced plastics industry. Trevor Starr is well known as a specialist consultant with many year's experience in the FRP world. He has assembled an international panel of distinguished experts to provide the widest possible coverage of the state-of-the-art in novel pultrusion applications and development including many leading US researchers such as Brandt Goldworthy, regarded by many as the father of modern pultrusion. Because this book is one of very few to cover pultrusion, it is essential reading for industrial producers of pultruded profiles, chemical companies producing resins and composite materials specialists eager to reach the new markets in, for example, civil engineering that are rapidly being opened up to design solutions involving pultrusions.

Book excerpt: Polymer matrix composites are used extensively across a wide range of industries, making the design and development of effective manufacturing processes of great importance. Manufacturing techniques for polymer matrix composites (PMCs) provides an authoritative review of the different technologies employed in the manufacture of this class of composite. Following an introduction to composites and manufacturing processes, part one reviews the manufacturing of short fiber and nanoparticle based polymer matrix composites, with injection and compression molding examined in depth. Thermoplastic processing is the focus of part two. Sheet forming, fabric thermostamping, filament winding and continuous fiber reinforced profiles are investigated. Part three reviews thermoset processing. A survey of resin transfer molding follows, including vacuum-assisted and compression resin transfer molding. The pultrusion process is then considered, before the book concludes with an investigation into autoclave and out-of-autoclave curing processes in polymer matrix composites. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors, Manufacturing techniques for polymer matrix composites (PMCs) is an essential guide for engineers and scientists working in the field of polymer matrix composites. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world now forced to address the issues of sustainability, environmental impact, and the widespread pollution of land and oceans with manmade materials, alternative resources must be considered for the future of the planet. A vast array of natural materials is available throughout the world with properties that are often superior to the man-made alternatives. Designing with Natural Materials fills the gap between the current scientific knowledge of the use of natural materials and product design and acts as a bridge between the two disciplines. The book serves as an introduction to natural materials within the context of design. The chapters include case studies, research, and a historical perspective. It develops ideas of designing with natural materials in specific areas and looks to the future of new biobased materials and how these will influence design. The work offers insight to designers of biobased materials across a range of different design disciplines while also providing insights to scientists on the process of design, production, and the needs of a material beyond those traditionally analyzed in the laboratory. The final chapters touch on the use of bioinspiration and biomimicry in the development and use of biobased materials and how natural design will influence both material design and products in the future. The book will be of interest to engineers, scientific researchers, professional designers, students, those working in industry who are considering using natural materials as an alternative to current unsustainable options, and anyone who has an interest in the subject.
