Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This book provides accurate descriptions of the injuries responsible for groin pain, which tend to occur in association with particular sports. The approach is multidisciplinary, ensuring that the book will be of broad appeal, and the focus is especially on epidemiology, etiology, and possible treatment options. Throughout, care has been taken to depict the state of the art in this constantly evolving field. A new classification of groin pain syndrome is presented, and the coverage encompasses hip, visceral, tendon/muscle, bone, and neurologic pathology. In addition, guidance is provided in selection of the rehabilitation program that will best meet the patient’s needs, taking into account individual circumstances. Groin pain is among the most prevalent lower limb symptoms. The pain may occur immediately after an injury or develop gradually and is often exacerbated by continued use of the injured area. In presenting the latest knowledge on groin pain syndrome and its management, this book will be of value to a range of practitioners, including sports medicine specialists, primary care providers, urologists, orthopedists, and physiatrists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated book describes the injuries to the hand and wrist that are commonly encountered among participants in combat sports, explaining the mechanisms of injury and offering state of the art guidance on diagnosis and treatment. It covers both injuries characteristic of individual sports, such as kendo, karate, judo, jiu-jitsu, aikido, and mixed martial arts, and pathologies encountered across the full range of combat sports, including boxing, wrestling, and taekwondo. In addition to management, careful attention is paid to rehabilitation following injury and to psychological aspects of recovery from injury. The book is the result of a collaboration with the International Society for Sport Traumatology of the Hand (ISSPORTH) and has been designed to meet the needs of all practitioners who work with combat sports athletes. While especially helpful for surgeons, physicians, therapists, and rehabilitators, it will also be of value to coaches, trainers, and players. The authors are leading international experts in the field who have been involved with international societies and in some cases have personal experience of combat sports at a high level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obesity is currently regarded as one of the major health challenges of the developed world. Excess body weight is an important risk factor for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders and even psychiatric problems and is estimated to cause nearly 3 million deaths per year worldwide. Obesity is not necessarily associated with comorbidities: there are indeed metabolically healthy obese individuals. Thus, we need to consider individuals presenting simple with obesity separately from those at risk of developing or who have already developed complex clinical states potentially leading to disability. Comorbidities can tip the balance of independence in patients who already have functional limitations mainly due to the excess of mass itself or who develop conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, where an abnormal metabolism of adipose tissue prevails. Morbid obesity with comorbidities leading to disability represents a real social and economic burden for National Health Systems worldwide. The presence of multiple and associated comorbidities often represents an obstacle to being admitted to hospitals for the treatment of metabolic diseases. On the other hand, clinical units with optimal standards for the treatment of pathological conditions in normal-weight patients are often structurally and technologically inadequate for the care of patients with extreme obesity. The aim of this book is to focus on the pathophysiological and rehabilitative aspects of disabling obesity, highlighting multidisciplinary rehabilitation interventions as key to counteracting the disabling aspects of complicated obesity.
