Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Christian Atonement The following Manual is not presented to the public, because the subjects it dis cusses are not ably set forth by men of deep theological science and ardent piety, but because most of the Works published are found in large volumes of systems of theology, and are, therefore, not so accessi ble to, and sought for by, the Christian public. Book excerpt: The atonement of Christ is the heart of Christianity. Christians are not only a people of the Book, but a people of the cross. In this accessible resource, author David L. Allen carefully summarizes the doctrine of the atonement, with definitions of key terms, discussion of key Old and New Testament texts, and a survey of the historical theories of the atonement. Addressing topics like the atonement’s necessity, nature, intent, extent, and application, The Atonement answers questions such as, “is the atonement actual or potential?” and “is the blood of Christ wasted on those who are eternally lost?” This book will be a go-to resource for all those who wish to understand what Christ accomplished on the cross by his death.

The book surveys historical views but also proposes that the atonement be seen as the death of Christ for both victims and the oppressed, as atonement for sinners and oppressors, as atonement for the whole creation—including animals and nature. This “triune atonement” refers to the involvement of the Trinity in the atonement, here presented from an Asian American perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long history of biblical exegesis and theological reflection has shaped our understanding of the atonement today. The more prominent highlights of this history have acquired familiar names for the household of faith: Christus Victor, penal substitutionary, subjective, and governmental. Recently the penal substitutionary view, and particularly its misappropriations, has been critiqued, and a lively debate has taken hold within evangelicalism. This Spectrum Multiview volume offers a "panel" discussion of four views of atonement maintained by four evangelical scholars. The proponents and their views are: Gregory A. Boyd: Christus Victor view Joel B. Green: Kaleidescopic view Bruce R. Reichenbach: Healing view Thomas R. Schreiner: Penal Substitutionary view Following an introduction written by the editors, each participant first puts forth the case for their view. Each view is followed by responses from the other three participants, noting points of agreement as well as disagreement. This is a book that will help Christians understand the issues, grasp the differences and proceed toward a clearer articulation of their understanding of the atonement. Spectrum Multiview Books offer a range of viewpoints on contested topics within Christianity, giving contributors the opportunity to present their position and also respond to others in this dynamic publishing format.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral System and the Atonement Somewhat over twenty-one years ago, I received, through another, an invitation from Prof. E. A. Park, D. D., of Andover, to write one or more Articles on the Atonement for the Bibliotheca Sacra, with special reference to Dr. Bushnell's Work entitled Vicarious Sacri fice, which I accepted. Writing on the subject increased in sight of its grounds and rootings in the nature of the moral sys tem, and unfolded comprehension of what is the breadth and length and height and depth both of the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, and of the relations of His atonement to God and His universal society for the salvation of man. 'about two thirds of Part I. And some of Part II. Were written at Grinnell, Iowa, during some more than two years before April, 1869, when, in an evil hour, I resigned my Pastorship there to undertake the founding ofa College at Kidder, Missouri. That enterprise so absorbed my time that this Work was almost wholly suspended, till in June, 1874, when, being wronged out of my College, I resumed and prosecuted it as persistently as possible, amidst numerous hindrances, until in the early part of 1878, when, about twelve years after it was begun, I wrote Finis. Before I left Grinnell, I decided to write a Book, instead of the Article or Articles at first designed; and if I had remained there, the Work would have been completed within three or four years from that time. Book excerpt: Robert William Dale (1829 – 1895) was an English Congregationalist pastor who ministered at Carr's Lane Chapel in Birmingham for over 40 years. His 1875 Lectures on the Atonement have remained in print for almost 150 years. John Stott tells the story of a minister who approached Martyn Lloyd-Jones in the early years of his ministry and observed that the finished work of Christ had little place in his preaching. Lloyd-Jones immediately visited a used bookstore and asked for any volumes on the atonement. The owner brought out James Denney's The Death of Christ and R. W. Dale's The Atonement. To the concern of his wife, Lloyd-Jones locked himself in his room, so absorbed in these two books he refused even to eat. When he emerged several days later, he exclaimed that he had found "the real heart of the gospel and the key to the inner meaning of the Christian faith."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus' death and resurrection are undeniably central to the Christian faith. But how, precisely, is their significance to be understood? Concerned to reinvigorate the church's teaching on the cross, the resurrection, and salvation -- the atonement -- Peter Schmiechen here invites readers to rediscover the wealth of the Christian tradition. In "Saving Power he makes ample use of primary sources to unpack ten distinct theories of atonement, welcoming aspects of each rather than championing only one. Along the way, he demonstrates that while most Christians assume the basic theme of atonement to be sin and forgiveness, other powerful themes -- liberation from oppressive powers, reconciliation in the face of division, and the hope of resurrection in the face of death, for instance -- also deserve to be studied and preached. Affirming orthodox teaching while offering a positive take on marginal views, "Saving Power is a crucial resource for anyone who seeks a fuller understanding of Christ's work.
