Book Synopsis The Modern Plantation in the Third World by : Edgar Graham
Download or read book The Modern Plantation in the Third World written by Edgar Graham and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, this was the first study to define and rationalise the character and functions of the plantation in the contemporary world. The author, Edgar Graham, was uniquely placed to do this having had long experience of Unilever’s plantations in West Africa, Zaire, Malaysia and the Pacific. Writing as a pragmatist, from observed fact, his starting point was the fact that the ‘modern plantation’ bears very little resemblance to that of the past, on which most hostile accounts are still based. Two changes altered the very nature of the issue: First, the 20th Century plantation existed within an economic framework controlled by independent governments. Secondly, the rapid development in technology has revolutionised most aspects of plantation production. The result, it is argued, is that the modern plantation offers host governments the option of using this as the most efficient way of utilising available factors of production to provide a maximum social return. Exemplified by case studies, this study presents a powerful argument for the continue use of the plantation system when properly applied to a variety of tropical crops.

Key areas discussed include how to: Schedule and control projects Conduct and evaluate project feasibility studies Select a project manager and staff the project Secure the best experts for various project functions Expedite transfer of industrial technology from developed to developing nations Coverage of budgeting and cash-flow analysis promotes understanding of the cost aspects of projects. Readers are shown how to use the Critical Path Method and Program Evaluation and Review Techniques to streamline project scheduling. They also find out how to use learning curve analysis to evaluate project performance. Guidelines on managing multinational projects are supplemented with case studies that illustrate successful industrial development in different countries. Appendices list numerous research, industrial, and economic resources, as well as United Nations information sources. Book Synopsis Economic Analysis of Projects by : Lyn Squire
Download or read book Economic Analysis of Projects written by Lyn Squire and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general approach to economic analysis of projects is presented, including the basic notions of cost-benefit analysis in the context of project analysis. A systematic and consistent estimation and application of shadow prices is needed, and suggestions are made for incorporating distributional effects, as well as the customary efficiency components, into shadow prices. Social rates of return can then be calculated, taking into account the distributional impact of various projects, an aspect ignored in the usual economic rates of return as derived from efficiency prices. Shadow prices are derived to reflect a wide range of economic conditions and value judgments concerning basic policy objectives pertaining to growth and distribution. Uncertainty, sensitivity, and risk must also be evaluated in project analysis. An appendix addresses the technical derivation of shadow prices.
