Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for Teaching Midwives This manual was prepared by Anita M. Jones, R. N nurse-midwife, assistant director of the Maternity Center Association, New York City, for the use of nurse-midwives and others responsible for the supervision and instruction of untrained midwives under the auspices of State and local health departments, to teach them: (1) to use aseptic techniques; (2) never to interfere with the delivery of the baby; (3) to call the doctor at the first sign of danger. As the number of women being delivered by untrained midwives, though considerable, is reported to be steadily decreasing, this plan of instruction for midwives is directed only toward meeting the acute need for improving the standards of the untrained midwives now practicing until they can be replaced by nurse-midwives or physicians. Thus it may have a place in improving the maternity care offered in a transition period, while efforts continue toward putting into practice throughout the United States a standard of maternity care that calls for skilled medical and nursing services for every mother, or at least the services of the nurse-midwife in localities for which it is not practicable to provide skilled medical services. It is hoped that this manual will assist the nurse-midwife in the technical teaching and supervision which she gives to the practicing mid wives who have not had special training and preparation. It is not in any way a textbook on midwifery, nor can the classes for midwives that are based on it be considered as courses in midwifery. It is written simply, with frequent use of colloquial terms, so that the nurse-midwife will be able to present her instructions in language that the midwife will understand - the midwife who is without training and without formal education, who often can neither read nor write. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handbook for Midwives The midwife will find in the following pages, described in familiar language, all the information necessary for a thorough understanding of so much of the art of midwifery as belongs to her. Technical words and phrases are added and explained, so that she may be able to understand the orders and remarks of the accoucheur, when his scientific assistance is required. A general anatomical sketch of the human body is given with an exact description of the parts concerned in the business of conception, pregnancy, and delivery. The pro gress of pregnancy and its signs, the management of natural labour, and of the lying-in state, are minutely detailed. The diseases and accidents peculiar to each condition, the signs and symptoms of unnatural labour, and the treatment, are fully described as far as the midwife requires for her guidance, and for the recognition of impending danger. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rotunda Midwifery for Nurses and Midwives When teaching nurses at the Rotunda Hospital I was often impressed with the difficulty they had in under standing the manuals provided for them. This book is intended to give to nurses and midwives the knowledge they actually need as clearly and practically as possible. Thus the anatomy of organs and bones has not been divorced from their function, but the two being interdependent are described together, in order that anatomy may not be learnt in parrot fashion, but that its bearing on the processes of childbearing may be immediately appreciated. In a similar manner, as practice has a special power of appeal, the various conditions that may be met have been grouped and classified from a practical point of view, so that the main duties of a midwife may be remembered with the help of a few simple rules. Technical language has been avoided as far as possible, but when its use is necessary, it has been fully explained in the text and the derivation of the words has been given. It is hoped that in this way the subject of midwifery may present fewer difficulties for nurses and midwives, but it must be remembered that reading is only an adjunct to careful observation of cases, and that know ledge becomes more permanently assimilated, if in the interludes of reading and practical work, pupils ponder on and commit to the memory of their thoughts that which they have read or seen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104 Book of Modern Midwifery Many years have elapsed since the first appearance of the Obstetric Treatises, by Profs. Meigs, Hodge, and Bedford; and the more recent editions of their works have not kept pace with the progress of this branch of medicine. To supply the deficiency, the American Medical Schools have been furnished with Obstetric d104 Books from Great Britain and Continental Europe; chiefly by reprints of the works of Playfair and Leishman, and translations of those of Cazeaux and Schrocder. Believing that there is a demand for a work which shall more thoroughly represent American Obstetric Practice, the author has ventured to present the following condensed treatise to the medical students and practitioners of his own country. Many years' experience as a practitioner, and several as teacher of midwifery, lead him to hope that he may at least assist in supplying the demand for a book properly representing the peculiarities of American practice, and adapted to the wants of obstetric teachers and busy practitioners. He is under many obligations to Messrs. H. C. Lea's Son & Co., Lindsay & Blakiston, Tiemann, and others, for the use of illustrations, obtained chiefly from the works of Cazeaux, Meadows, Playfair, Leishman, Churchill, and Hodge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Matron's Manual of Midwifery: And the Diseases of Women During Pregnancy and in Childbed It has often been a matter of dispute, both with medical men and with moralists, whether Men or Women ought to assist in child-birth. The discussion has called forth a great deal of declamation, but very little has been said to the point on either side. It appears to me, however, that the question may be very easily settled, if it be rightly considered. The first requisite, and the most indispensable, in those who are to assist in child-birth is, that they should know Izozo to assist. This is paramount to everything else. Now, if females really do know what to do in such cases, and are fully competent to do it, I think there is no question but they are the best assistants, to say nothing of their being the most proper. There are many things experienced by females in such Situations, which can never be understood by a man at all, though they are readily appreciated by one of their own sex, par ticularly if she has been a mother herself. With each other also there will be less disposition and less occasion for reserve in delicate communica tions, and less repugnance to necessary examina tion or manipulation, which could therefore be more efficiently practised. In short, if women are equally'competent with men in this art, and full confidence is felt in them by their own sex, I think it is evident they must, in every respect, be the most fitting practitioners. Von Siebold, and soon developed a strong liking for this department of Medicine. In 1852 he visited Vienna, and afterwards England, Scotland, and Ireland, in order to study the methods of procedure in the Lying-in Institutions of these countries. Shortly after his return to Gottingen he published(1858) an excellent Compendium of Midwifery, and in 1860 was appointed Professor Extraordinarius of Midvifery in the University. The following year he was called to Freiburg as Prof. Ordinarius, and two years afterwards(1864) removed to Konigsberg, which however he again quitted on being appointed(1865) Professor at Breslau. In 1870 in conjunction with Crede, S. started the Archiv fr Gynakologie, and throughout his life was a constant and valuable contributor. Meanwhile he was accumulating a large practice, which however did not prevent him from devoting much time to the great work with which his name is mainly associated, viz. the Lehrbuch der Geburtshulfe, of which the following pages are a translation. The Lehrbuch appeared in 1878, and became so popular that in 1880 and edition was called for, and S. was far advanced with its preparation at the time of his death. Symptoms of failing health appeared in the summer of 1880, but so great was S. 's enthusiasm for his work, that it was with difficulty that he could be persuaded to abandon it for a season. The subject is arranged in two divisions, those of Physiology and Pathology. In each of these the events of Pregnancy, Labour, the Puerperal Period, and those connected with recent birth are dealt with in turn. I have endeavoured to omit nothing that has a practical bearing, and at the same time to avoid the waste of space and the confusion of the reader's mind which would be incurred by inserting all the most recent pathological speculations and the newest details of treatment. With this object it has been my care to read through, or at least examine, all available treatises and monographs dealing, with each portion of the subject, to allow the facts, if any appeared, to undergo mental digestion, and then to write the paragraph or chapter dealing with the particular question. The main part of the matter contained and the opinions expressed in the text is, however, derived from the experience I have gained from my own cases, principally in hospital, and from the cases of others either seen by me or described by observers worthy of confidence.
