Book excerpt: No ano agrícola 90/91 foi realizado um experimento no campo experimental da EMBRAPA/Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Biologia do Solo (CNPBS), Itaguaí, RJ em planossolo serie Ecologia, objetivando adequar a adubação orgânica com esterco e/ou com adubo verde para as culturas de quiabo e mandioca, e também observar o melhor manejo para solos arenosos, comparando-se o cultivo mínimo com o cultivo convencional e a incorporação ou não da vegetação. Inicialmente semeou-se duas leguminosas para adubação verde no verão, feijão-bravo-do-Ceará (Canavalia brasiliensis) e feijão-de-porco (Canavalia ensiformes) e deixou-se a vegetação espontânea(VE) crescer pelo mesmo período. Ambas foram cultivadas e manejadas após o corte de duas formas: cultivo convencional, sendo incorporada ao solo a vegetação após o corte; e cultivo mínimo, mantendo os materiais vegetais após o corte em cobertura sobre o solo. As produções medias de fitomassa seca (Kg/ha) foram: feijão bravo = 5829 (2,16% N), feijão-de-porco = 6241 (2,34% N), feijão-de-porco adubado com 5 toneladas de esterco/ha = 6185 (2,70%), feijão-de-porco semeado em parcelas com resíduo de esterco = 5320 (2,35% N) e VE = 4803 (1,87% N). Na fase seguinte dividiu-se as parcelas ao meio e plantou-se quiabo e mandioca. A produção de quiabo foi incrementada principalmente com os tratamentos: VE + 30 toneladas de esterco/ha e feijão-de-porco adubado com 5 toneladas de esterco/ha + 15 toneladas de esterco/ha. Este aumento foi da ordem de 80% a mais que o segundo melhor tratamento em que se.
