Book Synopsis National Capacity in Forestry Research by : National Research Council
Download or read book National Capacity in Forestry Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-06-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are major components of the earth's natural resources and they are increasingly critical to the welfare of the U.S. economy, environment, and population. Desires to improve forest management and productivity, preserve biodiversity, maintain ecologic integrity, and provide societal services, such as recreation and tourism, necessitate a strong forestry-research base. Given the clear importance of forestry research in sustaining forests for the future, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service asked the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources of the National Academies to undertake a study of the nation's capacity in forestry research. The Committee on National Capacity in Forestry Research was appointed to carry out the study, which was conducted to review the current expertise and status of forestry research and to examine the approaches of natural resources education and forestry-research organizations to meet future needs.

Book Synopsis Forestry Research by : National Research Council
Download or read book Forestry Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are valuable in our daily lives, crucial to our nation's ecomony, and integral to the long-term health of the environment. Yet, forestry research has been critically underfunded, and the data generated under current research programs is not enough to meet the diverse needs of our society. Forestry Research provides a research agenda that should yield the information we need to develop responsible policies for forest use and management. In this consensus of forestry experts, the volume explores: The diverse and competing concerns of the timber industry, recreational interests, and wildlife and environmental organizations. The gap between our need for information and the current output of the forestry research program. Areas of research requiring attention: biology of forest organisms, ecosystem function and management, human-forest interactions, wood as raw material, and international trade and competition. Forestry Research is an important book of special interest to federal and state policymakers involved in forestry issues, research managers, researchers, faculty, and students in the field.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management by : Eugenio Martinez-Falero
Download or read book Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management written by Eugenio Martinez-Falero and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest management has evolved from a mercantilist view to a multi-functional one that integrates economic, social, and ecological aspects. However, the issue of sustainability is not yet resolved. Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management brings together global research in three areas of application: inventory of the forest variables that determine the main environmental indices, description and design of new environmental indices, and the application of sustainability indices for regional implementations. All these quantitative techniques create the basis for the development of scientific methodologies of participatory sustainable forest management.

Book Synopsis Managing Forest Ecosystems: The Challenge of Climate Change by : Felipe Bravo
Download or read book Managing Forest Ecosystems: The Challenge of Climate Change written by Felipe Bravo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-08-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate changes, particularly warming trends, have been recorded around the globe. For many countries, these changes in climate have become evident through insect epidemics (e.g., Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic in Western Canada, bark beetle in secondary spruce forests in Central Europe), water shortages and intense forest fires in the Mediterranean countries (e.g., 2005 droughts in Spain), and unusual storm activities (e.g., the 2004 South-East Asia Tsunami). Climate changes are expected to impact vegetation as manifested by changes in vegetation extent, migration of species, tree species composition, growth rates, and mortality. The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has included discussions on how forests may be impacted, and how they may be used to mitigate the impacts of changes in climate, to possibly slow the rate of change. This book provides current scientific information on the biological and economical impacts of climate changes in forest environments, as well as information on how forest management activities might mitigate these impacts, particularly through carbon sequestration. Case studies from a wide geographic range are presented. This information is beneficial to managers and researchers interested in climate change and impacts upon forest environments and economic activities. This volume, which forms part of Springer’s book series Managing Forest Ecosystems, presents state-of-the-art research results, visions and theories, as well as specific methods for sustainable forest management in changing climatic conditions.

Book Synopsis Decision-making in Forest Management by : Michael Robert Wale Williams
Download or read book Decision-making in Forest Management written by Michael Robert Wale Williams and published by Research Studies PressLtd. This book was released on 1988 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making decisions is a risky business at any time, but in forestry the length of time between planting and harvesting makes it that much more perilous. In fact, forest managers may never see the final results of their actions. Some sort of 'back-up' is needed to help them make the right decisions. This book shows how certain financial 'tools' may be used to give this support, while stressing that the decision is still the responsibility of the manager.
Book Synopsis USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges by : Deborah C. Hayes
Download or read book USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges written by Deborah C. Hayes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. They also provide examples of long-term research on EFRs that have provided answers for questions not even imagined at the time the study was installed.
