Book Synopsis Climate Change and Multi-Dimensional Sustainability in African Agriculture by : Rattan Lal
Download or read book Climate Change and Multi-Dimensional Sustainability in African Agriculture written by Rattan Lal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 35-chapter book is based on several oral and poster presentations including both invited and contributory chapters. The book is thematically based on four pillars of sustainability, with focus on sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): Environment, Economic, Social and Institutional. The environmental sustainability, which determines economic and social/institutional sustainability, refers to the rate of use of natural resources (soil, water, landscape, vegetation) which can be continued indefinitely without degrading their quality, productivity and ecosystem services for different ecoregions of SSA. This book will help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the U.N. in SSA. Therefore, the book is of interest to agriculturalists, economists, social scientists, policy makers, extension agents, and development/bilateral organizations. Basic principles explained in the book can be pertinent to all development organizations.
Book Synopsis MASTERING BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION IN EDUCATION AND AFRICAN POLITICS (The Sierra Leone Chapter) by : Mohamed Sannoh
Download or read book MASTERING BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION IN EDUCATION AND AFRICAN POLITICS (The Sierra Leone Chapter) written by Mohamed Sannoh and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering Business Administration in Education and African Politics (the Sierra Leone Chapter) This is a revised and improved edition of your book, and as I have already been told, it is quite up-to-date with far more relevant information that address education, educational business, and political issues in Africa in particular, and how these are disturbing educational developments, especially in sub-Sahara and also with suggestions for improvements. According to Mohan Kaul, the co-chairman of Commonwealth Business Council, “giving the challenges ahead, governments have realized that it is beyond their capacity and means to achieve the task of improving education for all.” However, Patrick Dlamini, Chief Executive of Development Bank of South Africa, sited what has gone wrong with sudden growth of private schooling outside state control. “The government is having problems of retaining seasoned teachers. Private schooling is poaching the best of brains from the public schooling system, and the government is left with poor-quality teaching and inexperienced teachers because now the private sector has taken the ‘crème de la crème.’ How do you balance that?” But business is business, and business is about getting the customers what they want and satisfying them most. If African governments are unable to provide what people prefer most, people have the right to choose from existing alternatives so that they can spend their hard earnings on what they want and what can satisfy them most as long as they have the ability and willingness to pay for them. That is the dictation of free-market philosophy. Mohamed Sannoh, Methodist Boys’ High School, Kissy Mess Mess, Freetown.

Book Synopsis Nature-based solutions in agriculture: Project design for securing investment by : Hallstein, E., Iseman, T.
Download or read book Nature-based solutions in agriculture: Project design for securing investment written by Hallstein, E., Iseman, T. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-02-03 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the global food system drives a ten trillion-dollar economy that connects 7.5 billion consumers and a diverse array of more than 1 billion food producers (farmers, ranchers, pastoralists, and fish harvesters). Approximately one-half of the world’s habitable lands are used for agriculture (Ritchie, 2019). Not surprisingly, the food production system has a massive impact on our planet. As we look to the future, global food demand is set to increase 50%, including a 70% increase in protein demand by 2050 (OECD and FAO, 2018). Any solution to our challenges around climate, conservation and human well-being will need to involve a transition in the way we produce food and fiber. Agriculture can begin to use Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to reduce environmental impacts and, in some cases, enhance agricultural productivity. But in order to realize the full potential of Ag NbS to have a positive impact on these problems, we need new ways to fund them that are commensurate with the scale of the opportunities.
