Book excerpt: 'One of the year’s most engrossing, thought-provoking books’ The English Garden A reflective second book by Jinny Blom (author of The Thoughtful Garden), one of the world’s leading garden designers. What Makes a Garden builds upon the work of The Thoughtful Garden, giving a broader idea of how she thinks about garden design. In particular it emphasizes her multi-disciplinary approach, which embraces architecture, conservation and art, coupled with a strong holistic thread. This fascinating and insightful book looks at how a garden should please all five senses; how it is an alchemical mix of the inanimate and the living; and also how it has to accommodate both the effects of time and the influences of culture. This is not intended as a book of rules but rather a way of thinking about garden design and making sure it responds to the particularities of place, the culture and the demands of the client. Drawing on her work and experience over the last 20 years or so, the book gets to the heart of what people want and need from a garden and what makes it different from a natural landscape. Reflecting Jinny‘s highly individual approach to garden design, the book is filled with warmth and character alongside her expert knowledge. With a broad appeal, this beautiful book is for all garden lovers: thoughtful yet practical and informative, it marries artistry with functionality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vintage book contains a fantastic guide to gardening, concentrating on planting and propagating perennials. A Perennial is a plant that lives for longer than two years and grows to boom over the spring and summer, dies every autumn and winter, and then returns in the spring from its rootstock. This term is usually often used to separate these types of plants from shorter-lived annuals and biennials, as well as to distinguish those that have little or no woody growth from trees and shrubs. This volume is highly recommended for those with a practical interest in growing these types of plants, and it would make for a worthy addition to collections of allied literature.

Book excerpt: First published in 1956, We Made a Garden is the story of how Margery Fish, the leading gardener of the 1960s, and her husband Walter transformed an acre of wilderness into a stunning cottage garden, still open to the public at East Lambrook Manor, Somerset, England. This is now one of the most important books on gardening ever written. A beautiful and timeless book on creating a garden. Margery Fish turned to gardening when she was in her mid-forties and went on to develop the whole concept of a cottage garden. She had a love of flowers coupled with a passion for nature and made an intensive research into the traditionally grown plants with which cottage gardens in Britain were once so densely planted. In this classic owrk, she recounts the trails and tribulations, successes and failures, of her venture with ease and humour. Topics covered are colourful and diverse, ranging from the most suitable hyssop for the terraced garden through composting, hedges, making paths to the best time to lift and replant tulip bulbs. Her good sense, practical knowledge and imaginative ideas will encourage and inspire gardeners everywhere.

This is an instinct which is genetically bred in him/her. However, in the 21st century, many parents like to cushion their children so much that they do not want them to go out in the sun, breath in the fresh air, or even expose themselves to the hazards of the polluted atmosphere. So is it a surprise that many children do not know all about the joys of making a children’s garden and gathering their own harvest for the first time in their lives. This book is going to tell you how you can add plenty of joy and interest in the lives of your family members, especially when their children by helping them make their own childrens’ garden. Of course, the first step is not to make them feel that gardening is a duty and something which you have imposed on them. This is immediately going to put their backs up! My grandfather tried reverse psychology on us as kids, to get us to water his large garden. He tried pretending that we were very delicate, and we would catch colds if we were found playing about with his water pipes, sprinklers, and hoses. Needless to say, the moment he left for his club for the evening, we were out in the garden, watering the whole land merrily, and getting thoroughly and enjoyably drenched in the bargain. And we roped in the help of our friends and playmates too whose own grandfathers were also very particular about the health of their own grandchildren, when subjected to the close proximity of hosepipe water! Naturally, this bit of inverse psychology worked equally well, when he said that our hands were too little to do the weeding, and we decided to prove that he was wrong. Naturally, after finding the piles of weeds when he came back from his club, he had to admit that he was wrong and asked grandma to reward us with extra helpings of chocolate cake for being such tireless little soldiers. So you could say that in the initial stages, we did our share of gardening through not so altruistic motives, but soon we got addicted to the feel of soil between our fingers. But then that was natural because man and the earth are bound together, naturally.

Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Making Your Garden Tips when planting trees and Shrubs Planning Your Garden PH value Flowering Plants Conifers, Cypress And Firs Willows and Maples Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction A main garden can either be in the front of your house or at the back of your house – wherever you have some space. It does not matter how large your house is; the main garden is usually going to take up the empty part of the whole building lot or plot. Your backyard may be your main garden, with exotic flowers and trees. In the same way, your front garden is going to be the most attractive landscaping feature which is going to welcome all the visitors with a smile. That is the reason why front gardens in comparison to main gardens do not normally have large trees taking up all the area. Unless of course you are very fond of conifers and cannot do without them. Remember that the front garden is going to be your visiting card. This is going to give your visitor a first-hand impression about you, your tastes, your personality and also whether your house is welcoming or is it just a bleak, dour, Gothic magnificent construction with absolutely no sign of welcome around it? And after that you are going to take your visitors to see your main garden which you have made with a lot of care, effort and pride. All of us know that a majority of us are instinctively nature loving however much circumstances have made us citified. Most of us wish to go back to the wide open spaces, the woods and above all, any place where it is green, nice, and soothing. The instinct to have your own plot of land is innate and once you have that bit of plot, the first thing that you are going to do is make a roof for yourself and your family, and then look at the rest of the space in which you can plant things. This instinct to see things grow, especially through your own effort is one of the natural instincts inherent in man. So if you find yourself getting resigned to a paradise of bricks and mortar and pollution, isn't it time that you should escape and live amid blossoms, greenery and the fresh air. For millenniums, one has known and understood this cliché – everything you really desire can always be obtained. But to obtain that precious goal is going to take a little bit of effort. So that means you need to do a little bit of early planning, and work with a continuous dedication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Create a beautiful and practical coastal garden with this inspiring and comprehensive guide. The seaside can be a stunning setting for a garden, but it can be difficult to find plants that will thrive. Salt-laden winds make the careful selection of plants and landscaping materials vital. This book provides a step-by-step process, as used by professional garden designers, that will help you design, build and plant a beautiful, sustainable and successful garden in these conditions. From initial inspiration to planting and styling techniques, Designing and Creating a Coastal Garden will show you how to create your dream garden by the sea. The coast is a special place for so many of us. The quality of light and air, and the sense of space and freedom, have an irresistible draw on artists and holidaymakers. Those who make their homes by or near sea can feel very privileged to do so. A walk along an exposed sea front in a coastal town will usually reveal front gardens with battered specimens of the same few, not very exciting shrubs and trees. One could be forgiven for giving up on the idea of a coastal garden. But there is no need to despair. This book will show you, step-by-step, how to create a beautiful and practical seaside garden. Gardens evolve over the seasons and over the years with tweaks and experiments, as the gardener's taste and understanding of the garden develops. But a lot of frustration, disappointment and wasted money can be avoided by starting with a good design. And for no type of garden is this truer than for a coastal garden. Designing and Creating a Coastal Garden shows how, beginner or experienced, you can design a garden that will work practically, beautifully and harmoniously with a seaside setting. Detailed advice is given on what plants and what landscaping materials work best on the coast, as well as horticultural techniques and sample planting plans. It is also incredibly rewarding to create habitats and observe the wildlife in a garden. This book shows how to take inspiration from the type of coastal habitat found near a garden both for style and for successful gardening for wildlife. Whatever the scale of your project, from improving a tiny corner, to a major whole-garden restyle, this book will help you create a wonderful garden by the sea.
