Book excerpt: It's 1965 in New Orleans and eight year old Nicky can't wait for summer because that's when he stays with his Maw-maw and he gets to help her out in her restaurant. He especially loves when they shop for all the ingredients needed to prepare all the delicious food! Maw-Maw Lillian calls it "Makin' Groceries." Makin' Groceries is an old South Louisiana expression that is traditionally used for food shopping. It derives for the French faire son marche, "to do one's market shopping." Faire translates to either "to do" or "to make." Some folks, for reasons of nostalgia, the author included, still use this wonderful expression with great pride!

Book excerpt: "Making Groceries" - Makin' Groceries is a New Orleans term that, simply put, means going to the grocery store to buy or purchase groceries. Ask any stranger what they think of when you mention "New Orleans" and more often than not "the food" is the first thing that they rave about. Making Groceries is just the beginning of the journey though... to really experience the food means experiencing the meaning behind the food. Many of these recipes were shared during family get-together's and special events where everyone brings their best dish. As you browse through the pictures and short stories you fall in love with food, family, and friends. This is not your "generic" variety cookbook...this is a legacy of love, and cultural expression, passed down through generations, that choose to defy the limits of recipes or ethnicity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Carnival has been well documented with a vast array of books published on the subject. However, few of them, if any, mention gay Carnival krewes or the role of gay Carnival within the larger context of the season. Howard Philips Smith corrects this oversight with a beautiful, vibrant, and exciting account of gay Carnival. Gay krewes were first formed in the late 1950s, growing out of costume parties held by members of the gay community. Their tableau balls were often held in clandestine locations to avoid harassment. Even by the new millennium, gay Carnival remained a hidden and almost lost history. Much of the history and the krewes themselves were devastated by the AIDS crisis. Whether facing police raids in the 1960s or AIDS in the 1980s, the Carnival krewes always came back each season. A culmination of two decades of research, Unveiling the Muse positions this incredible story within its proper place as an amazing and important facet of traditional Carnival. Based on years of detailed interviews, each of the major gay krewes is represented by an in-depth historical sketch, outlining the founders, moments of brilliance on stage, and a list of all the balls, themes, and royalty. Of critical importance to this history are the colorful ephemera associated with the gay tableau balls. Reproductions of never-before-published brilliantly designed invitations, large-scale commemorative posters, admit cards, and programs add dimension and life to this history. Sketches of elaborate stage sets and costumes as well as photographs of ball costumes and rare memorabilia further enhance descriptions of these tableau balls.

Book excerpt: “[A] fantastic new book and entertaining guide . . . Lends guidance on gatherings from a Mardi Gras Jamboree and a Polynesian Luau to a Goblin Fest.” —myNewOrleans.com Author Brian Theis presents a well-rounded cookbook that takes us back to the mid-twentieth century and the foods that fed the nation’s craving for comfort and world travel. In seasonal chapters from New Year’s to the winter holidays, he provides curated and themed menus, easy to follow recipes, and kitchen tips. From casseroles and comfort foods, a Valentine’s Day party and a Mardi Gras Jamboree to a Fiesta Mexicana and Thanksgiving Bons Temps Rouler, the dishes are just as delicious as they are picturesque! Interviews with celebrity chefs and restaurateurs, including Gabriele Corcos, Billy Oliva, JoAnn Clevenger, and Phillip Lopez, and a tribute to Leah Chase round out the offerings in this amazing cookbook! “This new cookbook has a spectacularly retro vibe, with midcentury-style illustrations and graphic design, and food photography that evokes the finest images in the Good Housekeeping oeuvre. The concept itself is rather retro, offering menus for fun, quasi-kitschy theme parties throughout the year. And, as you’d expect from a lifelong student of Creole food who calls New Orleans home, Theis’ recipes for a Mardi Gras jamboree are dynamite.” —The Takeout “A fun guide to graciously hosting loved ones. Brian Theis does a great job melding his innate Southern Charm with experience gained from travel and time abroad. His book will be a welcome addition to people who enjoy sharing food and drink with friends.” —Jacques Pépin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many reasons to make as many groceries at home as possible. The lack of chemicals and preservatives, financial savings and health benefits. Unless you are 100% self-sufficient, you can't make everything from scratch you purchase from the grocery store. I will give you tips to make those purchased items more economical and ways to store them. I live in a small town and since the pandemic started, many items have been hard to find. I cooked from scratch frequently, but just like everyone else, I started using more and more convenience foods to save time. The pandemic made me take a hard look at our eating habits and the need to have resources more readily available. I plan several hours a week into my schedule to make homemade groceries. These few hours invested ended up saving more time and money. There are a few kitchen items you will need. They are basic items that every kitchen should have. A good sharp knife, hand grater, box grater, freezer bags, food processor, blender, glass and/or plastic storage freezer containers. I like the Pyrex glass storage containers since I can freeze and microwave in them. I prefer glass to plastic but use what you have. Baking sheets, baking pans, cookie scoops, measuring cups and spoons are a must. I have a large freezer so I freeze most of my groceries. Even if you do not have a freezer, make as much as you can from scratch. Freeze what you can or refrigerate until used. Even a few items will add up in savings. A dollar or two saved here and there really adds up over time. We all love the convenience foods available at the grocery store. They are already cooked and ready to eat. Included are recipes for the most popular convenience items. They can be made at a fraction of the cost and the recipes contain no preservatives or chemicals. Your wallet, health and waistline will thank you. Homemade items do not taste exactly like store bought items. We have become addicted to chemically produced flavors. Homemade products do not have chemicals or unnatural preservatives and usually use much less sugar too.

After eight years with a popular group, earning more money than he can possibly spend in one lifetime, he longs for his old, uncomplicated life. As Christmas approaches, he leaves the band and heads home with his four-year-old daughter. Will Jillian have her heart broken again, or can she and Tristán overcome the past and keep each other warm this Christmas?

Makin' Christmas at Holmeses is a memoir of Dan Armstrong’s travel adventures while designing, developing and buying mainly Christmas décor for D.H. Holmes Co., Ltd., a New Orleans - based department store chain. It is a time piece dating 1979-1986, as well as including an epilogue of his later personal travel adventures. There are loads of laughable moments and fun quips that Armstrong has learned along the way from travelling with eccentric companions. Included is how Christmas Ornaments are initially conceived as concepts, and how those concepts are communicated to manufacturers. It is such a thrill to see the finished product that was once only a thought in someone’s mind. This book was a project commenced and completed during the pandemic and is a result of Armstrong’s quarantine during COVID-19.
