Book excerpt: "This is a guide for transportation professionals on why and how to deploy winter Maintenance Decision Support Systems (MDSS). Adverse winter weather can cause traffic delays and crashes. Treating the effects of winter weather can also have impacts on the environment. Addressing the complexities of winter maintenance and operations requires transportation personnel to work with a myriad of issues including: conflicting weather forecasts, hard to obtain road condition reports, and challenging commuting patterns. An MDSS can help maintenance personnel manage this information and make more informed decisions. An MDSS integrates weather and pavement forecasts specifically targeted to road segments with maintenance rules of practice to provide personnel with optimized road treatment strategies. This technology was developed under the direction of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) with contract support from a consortium of national research laboratories. A stakeholder group consisting of personnel from transportation agencies, academia, and the private sector assisted with development."--Technical report documentation p.

Book Synopsis Advanced Decision Support for Winter Road Maintenance by : Paul Pisano
Download or read book Advanced Decision Support for Winter Road Maintenance written by Paul Pisano and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides an overview of the Federal Highway Administration's winter Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS). The MDSS is a decision support tool that has the ability to provide weather predictions focused toward the road surface. These predictions are then merged with customized rules of practice that have been captured from maintenance managers and coded into a computer algorithm. The outcome is a set of treatment recommendations that will help an agency maintain the highest level of service possible given available staff and equipment resources, while minimizing the amount of material applied to the roads.

Book excerpt: Over the last decades maintenance management has evolved from a somewhat neglected function into a full-fledged business function in the industry as well as in the service sector. This book provides a structured approach to maintenance management. It covers maintenance strategy decisions, resource management, assessment system design, etc. Decision support models and tools in these areas are discussed from the theoretical point of view and illustrated by numerous examples and case studies.Due to its concept the book can be interesting for students as well as practitioners. This book is the successor of Maintenance Management (2000), which gave an introduction in the field.

Book excerpt: The main goal of the project was to address barriers that limit NDOTs ability to implement MDSS and MMS systems. The four project tasks included: developing a system for tracking sand and/or deicing material usage; developing and deploying MMS data display capability; studying the accuracy of the weather and road condition forecasts; and study and develop technology for mobile freeze point and/or salinity sensors.
Book Synopsis Web-based Implementation of a Winter Maintenance Decision Support System Using GIS and Remote Sensing by :
Download or read book Web-based Implementation of a Winter Maintenance Decision Support System Using GIS and Remote Sensing written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter maintenance, particularly snow removal and the stress of snow removal materials on public structures, is an enormous budgetary burden on municipalities and nongovernmental maintenance organizations in cold climates. Lately, geospatial technologies such as remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and decision support tools are providing a valuable tool for planning snow removal operations. A few researchers recently used geospatial technologies to develop winter maintenance tools. However, most of these winter maintenance tools, while having the potential to address some of these information needs, are not typically placed in the hands of planners and other interested stakeholders. Most tools are not constructed with a nontechnical user in mind and lack an easy to-use, easily understood interface. A major goal of this project was to implement a web-based Winter Maintenance Decision Support System (WMDSS) that enhances the capacity of stakeholders (city/county planners, resource managers, transportation personnel, citizens, and policy makers) to evaluate different procedures for managing snow removal assets optimally. This was accomplished by integrating geospatial analytical techniques (GIS and remote sensing), the existing snow removal asset management system, and web based spatial decision support systems. The web-based system was implemented using the ESRI ArcIMS ActiveX Connector and related web technologies, such as Active Server Pages, JavaScript, HTML, and XML. The expert knowledge on snow removal procedures is gathered and integrated into the system in the form of encoded business rules using Visual Rule Studio. The system developed not only manages the resources but also provides expert advice to assist complex decision making, such as routing, optimal resource allocation, and monitoring live weather information. This system was developed in collaboration with Black Hawk County, IA, the city of Columbia, MO, and the Iowa Department of transportation. This product was also demonstrated for these agencies to improve the usability and applicability of the system.
