Book excerpt: It is a well-kept secret that people love cemeteries, says author Karen Batignani, and the interest in them is growing rapidly. In this guidebook, she presents 35 of Maine's most beautiful, historic, and interesting coastal cemeteries, each described in a lively and informative way. Descriptions include their locations, as well as information about unusual epitaphs, notable carvings, historically relevant details, folklore, and stories about well-known stonecutters, prominent people, and war veterans. She also delves into a brief history of New England graveyards, changes in headstone styles through time, and how those changes reflect evolving cultural attitudes toward death. She even includes advice on graveyard etiquette and photography tips. This guide will appeal to anyone interested in graveyards, graveyard art and photography, or history -- as well as those who want to discover more beautiful Maine places to visit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retired from publishing The New England Homestead in 1899, George Storrs Graves took up photography and soon began to print his best pictures on postcards. Captured in this exciting collection are images of Maines scenic coastline as it appeared early in the 20th century, through the eyes of a successful businessman and talented photographer. Graves recognized that people wanted to see their hometowns in print, and he photographed everything from cottage-rimmed shorelines to commercial establishments. He and his wife spent summer months on the coast of Maine, at Small Point in Phippsburg and near West Harpswell. He traveled by foot, small ship, and steamship to both popular and little-known locales along the coast; his pictures depict the sea in all of its moods. The images in this collection were taken c. 1907 to 1914 and include areas from Cape Elizabeth to Monhegan. Resorts that flourished during the summer months are depicted, including a one-time resort at Popham Beach. View early fishing vessels and the scenery of Casco Bay, including unusual shots of the Harpswell shoreline, in this previously unpublished collection of the postcards of George S. Graves.

Book excerpt: The slate gravestones of southern Maine bear evidence to the region's fascinating history, from shipwrecks and famous wartime sea captains to countless ordinary citizens. Master stone-cutter Bartlett Adams memorialized the tragedy and triumph of the region in nearly two thousand gravestones. Examine the artistry of the headstones that mark the resting places of three generations of the same family who all went down with the schooner Charles, and discover the grief that Adams poured into the stones for his own three children. Through deep and original research, author and guide Ron Romano narrates the early history of southern Maine and one man's legacy, carved in stone.

Book excerpt: Evidence of the early history of African Americans in New England is found in the many old cemeteries and burial grounds in the region, often in hidden or largely forgotten locations. This unique work covers the burial sites of African Americans--both enslaved and free--in each of the New England states, and uncovers how they came to their final resting places. The lives of well known early African Americans are discussed, including Venture Smith and Elizabeth Freeman, as well as the lives of many ordinary individuals--military veterans, business men and women, common laborers and children. The author's examination of burial sites and grave markers reveals clues that help document the lives of black New Englanders from the 1640s to the early 1900s.

This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1836, the Maine State Museum is America’s oldest state museum and is known to many as “Maine’s Smithsonian” because of the breadth and diversity of its holdings—nearly a million objects covering every aspect of the state’s cultural, biological, and geological history—and the thousands of stories its collections tell. For this book the museum selected and photographed 112 artifacts and specimens that, together, tell an epic story of the land and its people from prehistoric times to the present. It is a story covering 395 million years, a story told with a walrus skull and fossils, tourmaline and spear points, mammoth tusks and bone fishhooks, Norse coins and caulking irons, militia flags and survey stakes, treaty documents and wooden tankards, a temperance banner and a locomotive, Joshua Chamberlain’s pistol and a cod tub trawl, a Lombard log hauler and a woman’s WWII welding outfit, L. L. Bean boots and German POW snowshoes, and many more objects from the museum’s collections. Short narratives written by museum curators are woven around each item—including photos of related objects—and the ensemble has been honed, polished, and introduced by museum director Bernard Fishman. This is a book that historians and Maine residents and visitors will delve into again and again, unearthing new treasures with each reading.

Book excerpt: The Swordfish Hunters or Red Paint People as they are called because of the red ochre in their burial sites, were a remarkable culture living on the coast of Maine between 4500 and 3800 years ago. They appeared, briefly flourished, and then vanished without explanation, leaving plentiful evidence of their maritime prowess, from exquisitely carved bone daggers to harpoons and fishing gear whose basic design has not been improved upon in five millennia.
