Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maine Historical Memorials Historical Society at its annual meeting in June, 1921. Anotice of this appointment came to me soon after in Eng land, but the writing of the paper was deferred until the winter following my return. The service to which I was called in this way was a welcome one. I had had large Opportunities of knowing Mr. Baxter personally. We became members of the Maine Historical Society on the same day in 1878, and we were not only intimately asso ciated in the work of the society in that early period, but in other relations, social and civic. When I first knew him, however, he had not only already brought his busi ness activities to a close, but was ready, in the full vigor of life, for new activities having reference to the. History and advancing honor of his native state, and to the improve ment and adornment of the beautiful city in which he lived. With what high hopes and purposes he wrought, abundant in labors continued into a ripe old age, I have aimed to indicate in my narration. My thanks are due to Hon. Percival P. Baxter, governor of Maine, for the use of the fine photograph of his father from which the print, facing the opening page of this paper, was prepared. Book excerpt: A fully updated and revised edition of the book USA Today called "jim-dandy pop history," by the bestselling, American Book Award–winning author "The most definitive and expansive work on the Lost Cause and the movement to whitewash history." —Mitch Landrieu, former mayor of New Orleans From the author of the national bestseller Lies My Teacher Told Me, a completely updated—and more timely than ever—version of the myth-busting history book that focuses on the inaccuracies, myths, and lies on monuments, statues, national landmarks, and historical sites all across America. In Lies Across America, James W. Loewen continues his mission, begun in the award-winning Lies My Teacher Told Me, of overturning the myths and misinformation that too often pass for American history. This is a one-of-a-kind examination of historic sites all over the country where history is literally written on the landscape, including historical markers, monuments, historic houses, forts, and ships. New changes and updates include: • a town in Louisiana that was the site of a major but now-forgotten enslaved persons' uprising • a totally revised tour of the memory and intentional forgetting of slavery and the Civil War in Richmond, Virginia • the hideout of a gang in Delaware that made money by kidnapping free blacks and selling them into slavery Entertaining and enlightening, Lies Across America also has a serious role to play in contemporary debates about white supremacy and Confederate memorials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1848 as the first major work in the nascent discipline as well as the first publication of the newly established Smithsonian Institution, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley remains today not only a key document in the history of American archaeology but also the primary source of information on hundreds of mounds and earthworks in the eastern United States, most of which have now vanished. Despite adhering to the popular assumption that the moundbuilders could not have been the ancestors of the supposedly savage Native American groups still living in the region, the authors set high standards for their time. Their work provides insight into some of the conceptual, methodological, and substantive issues that archaeologists still confront. Long out of print, this 150th anniversary edition includes David J. Meltzer's lively introduction, which describes the controversies surrounding the book’s original publication, from a bitter, decades-long feud between Squier and Davis to widespread debates about the links between race, religion, and human origins. Complete with a new index and bibliography, and illustrated with the original maps, plates, and engravings, Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley provides a new generation with a first-hand view of this pioneer era in American archaeology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 2004, the sixtieth anniversary year of D-Day, the nation paid tribute to its World War II heroes with the dedication of a memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This beautifully illustrated keepsake offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the memorial and its place in American history. Exclusive photographs show the memorial in all stages of development, accompanied by text exploring the symbolism of each part -- the Rainbow Pool, the Wall of Remembrance, the Field of Stars, the Freedom Wall, and the Pillars of the States and Territories. George H. W. Bush, former senator Bob Dole, Yogi Berra, and other veterans share their personal stories, and leading military historians contribute essays on the war efforts at home and abroad. Like the memorial it commemorates, this book pays tribute to the "greatest generation" -- the everyday Americans who rose up to defend our freedom.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Maine: A Life Record of Men and Women of the Past, Whose Sterling Character and Energy and Industry Have Made Them Preëminent in Their Own and Many Other States The historic spirit, faithful to the record; the discerning judgment, unmoved by prejudice and uncolored by undue enthusiasm, are as essential in giving the life of the indi vidual person as in writing the history of a people. Each one of us is the heir of all the ages, in the foremost files of time. We build upon the solid foundations laid by the strenuous efforts of the fathers who have gone before us. Nothing is more fitting, and, indeed, more important, than that we should familiarize ourselves with their work and personality; for it is they who have lifted us up to the lofty positions from which we are working out our separate careers. Lest we forget, it is important that we gather up the fleeting memories of the past, and give them permanent record in well chosen words of biography, and in such reproduction of the long lost faces as modern science makes possible.
