For him, science and technology must serve public interest as a way for society to better itself, and the world as well. It encompasses twenty-one seminal addresses related to science and technology by the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, including his acceptance speech during the convocation, and also his early writings in 1960s. The addresses and writings demonstrate his keen interest on the wide-ranging topics of science and technology, as well as his command and competency on a complex discipline.

Book excerpt: Documenting Indigenous Knowledge in Science, Technology and Innovation contains several interesting chapters related to natural resources that are found in Malaysia and how these resources are used by indigenous and/or local people for survival. For example, the availability of marine resources such as fish as a source of protein to humans should be maintained to accommodate the increasing demand by the world’s population. Some approaches to maintain the availability of marine resources, as discussed in this book is the effective conservation strategies, sustainable aquaculture systems and the use of latest technology in the provision of capture data of marine life. The rapid increase in the world population has also changed people's views about the plants that have medicinal value towards the more aggressive use. However, efforts to record and document the medical plants is lacking in Malaysia. In addition to being a key ingredient in traditional medicine, plants such as banana can also be innovated as a renewable energy source. Although the discovery and design of this still new in Malaysia, efforts to further refine these findings should be continued to ensure the availability and sustainability of renewable energy sources. This book is suitable for use by all levels of readers, such as teachers, lecturers, researchers, scientists and the general public who need information about the topics included in this book.

It presents the related science and technology knowledge, new applications or developments that have taken place based on local knowledge. It consists of papers that illustrate the contribution of local knowledge to scientific investigation, unearth unknown or little known significance of local plant and animal resources, as well as their management and conservation. The argument for the importance of modern techniques to increase the supply of natural resources through scientific manipulations is clear. However, traditional methods that ensure better quality and resilience is recommended. Integration of the traditional with the modern is explored, using disaster management strategies and integrative health care system as examples. Another aspect explored in this book is the changing food culture among the three main ethnics groups in Malaysia due to their interactions within a multicultural society. This book also highlights the contribution of local knowledge in developing animation technology. Experimentation with GIS technology in the performing arts to map a dance performance is an example of trans-disciplinary collaboration between technology and the arts. This book serves to expand knowledge in science and technology that deals with local knowledge, and make it accessible to a wider, global audience beyond the Malay world.

This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the Islamization of knowledge was introduced by Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas in the late 1970s. It aimed to detach knowledge from Western culture and civilization in order to replace it with Islamic concepts, frameworks and values. The Islamization of knowledge was to occur in the fields of education and culture, manifesting in changes to the syllabus in institutions of higher learning and niche areas of interest in selected research institutes. In the field of culture, however, it resulted in an unintended consequence of Malay literature being heavily characterized by Islamic elements. Over the years, proponents of the Islamization of knowledge in Malaysia have moved beyond the fields of education and culture. They have entered the mainstream and become part of the state machinery, thus possibly impacting national policies. The concept has also evolved and arguably led to the strengthening of Islamic conservatism among Malaysian intellectual and cultural elites. More specifically, its exclusivist thinking does not augur well for intra- and intercommunal relations in the country.

This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the expansion of Islamisation within a modern and plural state such as Malaysia. It elaborates on how elements of theology, sacred space, resources, and their interactivity with secular instruments such as legislative, electoral, and new social technological platforms are all instrumentally employed to consolidate a divine bureaucracy. The book makes the point that religious social movements and political parties are only few of the important agents of Islamisation in society. The other is the modern and secular state structure itself. Weber’s legal rational bureaucracy or Hegel’s ethical bureaucracy predominantly characterises a modern feature of governmentality. In this instance an Islamic bureaucracy is advantageously situated not only within an ambit of modernity and therefore legality, but divinity and therefore sacrality as well. This positioning gives religious state agents more salience than any other form of bureaucracy leading to their unquestioned authority in the current contexts of societies with Muslim majority rule. One of the requisites of this condition is the homogenisation of Islam followed by ring-fencing of its constituents. The latter can involve contestations with women, other genders, ‘secular’ Muslims, non-Muslims as well as dissenting Muslims with their differing truthful ‘Islams’.
