Book excerpt: This volume contains all three books of theoretical and practical use by Franz Bardon. Franz Bardon needs no introduction in the field of Magic, Evocation, occultism, practical use of the first three tarot cards, use of magical words and letters. A Course of Instruction of Theory & Practice of Magic+ Magical Evocation + Magical Words Anyone who should believe to find in this work nothing else but a collection of recipes, with the aid of which he can easily and without any effort attain to honor and glory, riches and power and aim at the annihilation of his enemies, might be told from the very inception, that he will put aside this book, being very disappointed. Numerous sects and religions do not understand the expression of “magic” otherwise than black art, witchcraft or conspiracy with evil powers. It is therefore not astonishing that many people are frightened by a certain horror, whenever the word “magic” is pronounced. Jugglers, conjurers, and charlatans have discredited this term and, considering this circumstance, there is no surprise that magic knowledge has always been looked upon with a slight disregard. Even in the remotest times the MAGUS has been regarded as one of the highest adepts and it might be of interest to learn that, as a matter of fact, the word “magic” is derived from this word. The so called “sorcerers” are by no means initiates but only imitators o the mysteries, who counting partly on the ignorance and partly on the credulity of the individuality or a whole nation in order to reach their selfish aims by, lies and fraud. The true magician will always despise such practices. In reality, magic is a sacred science, it is, in the very true sense the sum of all knowledge because it teaches how to know and utilize the sovereign rules. There is no difference between magic and mystic or any other conception of the name. Wherever authentic initiation is at stake, one has to proceed on the same basis, according to the same rules, irrespective of the name given by this or that creed. Considering the universal polarity rules of good and evil, active and passive, light and shadow, each science can serve good as well as bad purposes. Let us take the example of a knife, an object that virtually ought to be used for cutting bread only, which, however, can become a dangerous weapon in the hands of a murderer. All depends on the character of the individual. This principle goes just as well for all the spheres of the occult sciences. In my book I have chosen the term of “magician” for all of my disciples, it being a symbol of the deepest initiation and the highest wisdom. Many of the readers will know, of course, that the word “tarot” does not mean a game of cards, serving mantical purposes, but a symbolic book of initiation which contains the greatest secrets in a symbolic form. The first tablet of this book introduces the magician representing him as the master of the elements and offering the key to the first Arcanum, the secret of the ineffable name of Tetragrammaton*, the quabbalistic Yod-He-Vau-He. Here we will, therefore, find the gate to the magician’s initiation. The reader will easily realize, how significant and how manifold the application of this tablet is. Not one of the books published up to date does describe the true sense of the first Tarot card so distinctly as I have done in my book. It is – let it be noted – born from the own practice and destined for the practical use of a lot of other people, and all my disciples have found it to be the best and most serviceable system. *Tetragrammaton literally means “the four-letter word”. It was a subterfuge to avoid the sin of uttering the sacred name YHVH (Yahveh) or Jehova as it later became when the vowels of another word were combined with the consonants of YHVH. But I would never dare to say that my book describes or deals with all the magic or mystic problems. If anyone should like to write all about this sublime wisdom, he ought to fill folio volumes. It can, however, be affirmed positively that this work is indeed the gate to the true initiation, the first key to using the universal rules. I am not going to deny the fact of fragments being able to be found in many an author’s publications, but not in a single book will the reader find so exact a description of the first Tarot card. I have taken pains to be as plain as possible in the course of the lectures to make the sublime Truth accessible to everybody, although it has been a hard task sometimes to find such simple words as are necessary for the understanding of all the readers. I must leave it to the judgment of all of you, whether or not my efforts have been successful. At certain points I have been forced to repeat myself deliberately to emphasize some important sentences and to spare the reader any going back to a particular page. There have been many complaints of people interested in the occult sciences that they had never got any chance at all to be initiated by a personal master or leader (guru). Therefore only people endowed with exceptional faculties, a poor preferred minority seemed to be able to gain this sublime knowledge. Thus a great many of serious seekers of the truth had to go through piles of books just to catch one pearl of it now and again. The one, however, who is earnestly interested in his progress and does not pursue this sacred wisdom from sheer curiosity or else is yearning to satisfy his own lust, will find the right leader to initiate him in this book. No incarnate adept, however high his rank may be, can give the disciple more for his start than the present book does. If both the honest trainee and the attentive reader will find in this book all they have been searching for in vain all the years, then the book has fulfilled its purpose completely. The Author.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prestidigitation or Magic Made Easy: Being a Complete Handbook of Legerdemain, and Containing All the Latest Optical, Chemical, Mechanical and Magical Tricks and Deceptions, Amusing Transmutations, Astonishing Sleights and Subtleties The Publishers of this little volume do not conceive that it will require an elaborate introduction to the reading public. That there has been "jugglery" in all ages of the world, history abundantly proves. The ancient religions of the heathen were mixed up with an extensive system of legerdemain and were mostly a tissue of trickery. Sleight of hand, magic, necromancy, &c., are all terms applicable to the same performances. The following pages are not intended to make the reader either a cheat or trickster. In the long winters evening, at Merry Christmas time, or on a wet day in the country, the young folks are often at a loss how to amuse themselves. To furnish the ingenious with the means to enable them to provide entertainment, to qualify the hero of his little circle to divert and astonish his friends, and to inform, without being dryly scientific, are the principal objects of this work. To those who mingle in society, and yet can neither tell a good story or sing, this little book will be invaluable. Those who have been mystified by professional magicians will here find the mysteries explained, and that, too, without any help from the "old gentleman" of whom it is not polite to speak. With the hope that our little book may be found acceptable, we present it to the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secrets of Ancient and Modern Magic, or the Art of Conjuring Unveilled: Performed by the Wonderful Magicians, Houdin, Heller, Herr Alexander, Maskelyne and Cookie Bautler and Others; Comprising All of Their Best Stage Tricks, Giving Full Explanations for Performing Them Successfully in the Parlor or on the Stage It follows, as a practical consequence of this first rule, that you should never perform the same trick on the same evening. The best trick loses half its effect on repetition, but besides this, the audience know precisely what is coming, and have all their faculties directed to find out at what point you cheated their eyes on the first occasion. It is sometimes hard to resist an encore, but a little tact will get you out of the difficulty, especially if you have studied, as every conjuror should do, the variation and combination of tricks. There are a score of different ways of vanishing a given article, and as many of re producing it and either one of the first may be used in con junction with either of the second. Thus, by varying either the beginning or the end, you make the trick to some extent a new one. The power of doing this readily is very useful, and among other, advantages will enable you to meet an encore by performing some other trick having some element of simiiarity to that which you have just completed, but termi nating in a different and therefore unexpected manner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the introductory: Always a Conjurer. My title may seem to demand a little explanation. Any conjurer worth calling a conjurer is "always a conjurer," but he sometimes goes to a lot of unnecessary trouble to hide the fact. This is a mistake. I am convinced that a conjurer should let people see he is "always a conjurer." He can only do this really effectively by conjuring. Hence the necessity for a good display of pocket tricks. The conjurer should always he "at it;" in this way he will build up a reputation for being a marvellous man even if his public show does not exactly make people sit up and stare! I am well aware that a good many men will not agree with this view, but I have never yet heard a good argument against it. It*has been said: "When I have done my show have finished with the public for the time being." But the public entertainer has never really finished with his public; if he thinks he has, or if he tries to separate himself from his public, he is losing ground It should be part of his business to be always "in" with the public. One argument against my pet view -- that a conjurer should conjure at every possible opportunity -- is that it makes him too cheap. I don't believe it. I should say that it would rather have an opposite effect. People would sooner hear that the Great So-and-So is never tired of conjuring, and is always springing surprises on his friends. Hearing that the public would naturally think that the Great So-and-So must be very enthusiastic over his work, and what 'better reputation can an artist have? When people once get to know that a conjurer conjures partly for sheer love of conjuring he is far more likely to be a success than one who believes in keeping strictly to business in business hours and in dropping business afterwards. A conjurer's life should always be "business hours..."..

The Little Golden Head On Three Rings, Dancing and Jumping in a Glass, to answer different Questions. To show that this head is free from mechanism, several crown pieces are placed in the bottom of a glass, covered with a close lid, which, notwithstanding, does not hinder this head from jumping into the glass, to answer any questions proposed. At the same time a bunch of rings, seen in another glass at a little distance, perform the same motions as by sympathy. Explanation. - A second head, both being of putty baked and gilded, is put in the place of the first shown to the company, which is taken off the table on which the operation is to be made. This second head is fastened to a thread, which, passing through the table, reaches under the floor to the confederate, who dances either the rings or head at pleasure, in order to correspond properly with the conjurer; and the rings jump in like manner at pleasure. A Simple Bird Scarer. Cut the bottom of a wide bottle by heated wire, continuing a crack begun with a file or diamond, or otherwise. Fasten a cork in the neck firmly, and through it pass a wire, the lower end to reach about half-way within the bottle, where it ends in a loop, to which a button is secured. It reveals a system of magick especially made for solitary practitioners, but even those who belong to a certain group or coven can also benefit from the teachings in this manual. Indeed, this is a manual for all witches, magicians, mages, wizards, and all practitioners of the Craft of Magick. It lays down a complete system of initiation, so that anyone who wishes to learn the real and sacred practice of magick may be given a chance to discover and experience its beauty and wonder. What does it mean to be initiated into the Craft of Magick? It means so much more than just reading about the occult arts. To be truly initiated, you should prove yourself worthy. In this manual, you will be given a special training course. By the time you finish the practices in the magical system as revealed herein, and provided you stay true to the teachings and the practices, then there will be no doubt that you would finally attain true initiation into the Craft. It is a sad fact that there are so many people out there who claim to be magical practitioners but know so little about the Craft. Worse, their magical skills and abilities are so poor that you might think of their practice as a mere joke. This is not to offend such people, but only to point to the fact that among the many initiates out there, only a few are true and genuine. True Initiation into the Craft of Magick teaches a legitimate magical system that can be used by beginners and even by intermediate practitioners. It is for those who are truly sincere in knowing and practicing the real Craft of Magick. This occult manual is packed with essential theories and practical exercises. Do not fear or worry, as I will guide you at every step of this journey. Just like any other art form, merely reading the techniques is not enough just as reading books about painting would not make one a painter. Take note, however, that acquiring the right knowledge is important. But, in order for this knowledge to be perfect, it has to be realized, and the only way to do this is to put your knowledge into actual and continuous practice. This magical manual covers, among others, the following: - The true meaning of Magick - Important magical theories - Magical techniques and exercises - The magical mind and the occult power of the imagination - How to manipulate magical energy effectively - Meditation techniques - The chakras - Elemental magick and more! Indeed, this magical system will welcome you into the real Craft of Magick. It will transform you into a real magical practitioner, a true and genuine initiate of the Craft of the Wise. If you think that you are worthy, then be ready to learn and train magically, for it is time for you to cast the most powerful magick: cast yourself. With light and with love, let us begin...
