Book excerpt: Madison Police Detective Molders has finally retired after a 29 year career and is living his dream, exploring Lake Superior aboard his 31 foot Gozzard sailboat. When his plans are interrupted by engine trouble, Molders sails to the Madeline Island Yacht Club for repairs. There, he is reunited with his old detective buddy Ron Helgusen and his old Isle Royale ranger partner, Katelynn "Tommy" Tomaczeski. Retired from MPD, Ron is now serving as the interim police chief for the tiny La Pointe Police Department on the island and "Tommy" is his only full time police officer. Ron asks Molders to help him look into some suspicious activity on the island. When the bodies start to pile up, Molders comes out of retirement to help investigate. Molders encounters old friends and old enemies in his pursuit of justice. The investigation uncovers the presence of ex-military and ex-intelligence operators mysteriously on the island. Further investigation reveals evidence linking murder to the operators efforts to keep their activities secret. Receiving little help from federal bureaucracies, Molders and his small team, outnumbered and out gunned, battle for justice.

Book excerpt: An updated reprint of the definitive history of a storied corner of the Upper Great Lakes—Madeline Island and the Chequamegon region on Wisconsin’s Lake Superior. A new foreword by Steve Cotherman, director of the Madeline Island Museum, brings the text of this book up to date on the history of Madeline Island and the Chequamegon region from the days before the missions to present-day tourism. Madeline Island played a significant role in the early history of Wisconsin and was an important outpost in the fur trade. Ojibwe from Wisconsin and surrounding areas view the island as a sacred place. Other Indian Nations, such as the Huron and Ottawa, also trace their history to Madeline Island. Today, Madeline Island and nearby Bayfield are popular tourist destinations, drawing tens of thousands of visitors every summer and throughout the winter.

Book excerpt: When a body is recovered from Lake Superior by the Red Cliff Tribal Police, retired Madison Police Detective Molders is asked to help with the investigation. Molders only has a few days before he has to report for a coveted summer job as a Law Enforcement Ranger at Isle Royale National Park. He helps with the initial investigation but has to leave before the victim is even identified. After a 29 year police career, Molders sold his house and now lives aboard his 31 foot Gozzard sailboat. He sails from Red Cliff to Mott Island, the Park Headquarters at Isle Royale. Reporting for duty, Molders is paired up with fellow LE Ranger Katelynn Tomaczeski. Currently a college student, Tomaczeski was born and raised in the U.P. and comes from a long line of commercial fisherman. She thinks Molders is too old to be up to the physical demands of the job and she finds his historical anecdotes boring. Molders thinks she is immature, and too young to know anything. Working together through various park incidents they earn each other's respect and bond as a team. When a second body is found floating in the lake, Molders suspects they have a serial killer and likely more victims. While continuing their daily patrols of the park Molders and Tomaczeski investigate the murders. Their investigation uncovers political corruption, human trafficking, and a serial killer. Together they battle brutal Lake Superior, a dirty cop, and political interference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes fur trade spanned two centuries and thousands of miles, but the story of one particular family, the Cadottes, illuminates the history of trade and trapping while exploring under-researched stories of French-Ojibwe political, social, and economic relations. Multiple generations of Cadottes were involved in the trade, usually working as interpreters and peacemakers, as the region passed from French to British to American control. Focusing on the years 1760 to 1840—the heyday of the Great Lakes fur trade—Robert Silbernagel delves into the lives of the Cadottes, with particular emphasis on the Ojibwe–French Canadian Michel Cadotte and his Ojibwe wife, Equaysayway, who were traders and regional leaders on Madeline Island for nearly forty years. In The Cadottes: A Fur Trade Family on Lake Superior, Silbernagel deepens our understanding of this era with stories of resilient, remarkable people.

Book excerpt: Picturesque little Bayfield on Lake Superior is Wisconsin’s smallest city by population but one of its most popular visitor destinations. This book captures those unique qualities that keep tourists coming back year after year and offers a historically reliable look at the community as it is today and how it came to be. Abundantly illustrated with both historical and contemporary images, This Superior Place showcases, as author Dennis McCann writes, “a community where the past was layered with good times and down times, where natural beauty was the one resource that could not be exhausted by the hand of man, and where history is ever present.” Because Bayfield serves as “the gateway to the Apostle Islands,” the book also includes chapters on the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Madeline Island, and the nearby Red Cliff Ojibwe community. It also covers the significant eras in the city’s history: lumbering, quarrying, commercial fishing, and the advent of the orchards visitors see today. It is not a guidebook as such but more of a visual and written tour of the city and the major elements that came together to make it what it is. Colorful stories from the past, written in Dennis McCann’s casual, humorous style, give a sense of the unique characters and events that have shaped this charming city on the lake.

Book excerpt: This #1 New York Times bestseller is a "bold and subversive retelling of the goddess's story" that brilliantly reimagines the life of Circe, formidable sorceress of The Odyssey (Alexandra Alter, TheNew York Times). In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child -- not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power -- the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus. But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love. With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language, and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man's world. #1 New York Times Bestseller -- named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR, the Washington Post, People, Time, Amazon, Entertainment Weekly, Bustle, Newsweek, the A.V. Club, Christian Science Monitor, Refinery 29, Buzzfeed, Paste, Audible, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, Thrillist, NYPL, Self, Real Simple, Goodreads, Boston Globe, Electric Literature, BookPage, the Guardian, Book Riot, Seattle Times, and Business Insider.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Madison’s Capital Times marks its 100th anniversary in 2017, editors Dave Zweifel and John Nichols recall the remarkable history of a newspaper that served as the tribune of Robert M. La Follette and the progressive movement, earned the praise of Franklin Delano Roosevelt for its stalwart opposition to fascism, battled Joe McCarthy during the "Red Scare," championed civil rights, women’s rights, and LGBTQ rights, opposed the Vietnam War and the invasion of Iraq, and stood with Russ Feingold when he cast the only US Senate vote against the Patriot Act. The Capital Times did not do this from New York or Washington but from the middle of America, with a readership of farmers, factory workers, teachers, and shopkeepers who stood by The Cap Times when the newspaper was boycotted, investigated, and attacked for its determination. At a point when journalism is under assault, when newspapers struggle to survive, and "old media" struggles to find its way in a digital age, The Capital Times remains unbowed—still living up to the description Lord Francis Williams, the British newspaper editor, wrote 50 years ago: "The vast majority of American papers are as dull as weed-covered ditch-water; vast Saharas of cheap advertising with occasional oases of editorial matter written to bring happiness to the Chamber of Commerce and pain and irritation to none; the bland leading the bland.... Just here and there are a few relics of the old fighting muckraking tradition of American journalism, like The Capital Times of Madison."
