Book excerpt: William Henry Cuyler Hosmer (1814-1877) was a fairly accomplished lawyer, author, and poet, born to the prominent pioneering Hosmer family of Avon, N.Y. He authored several books in his lifetime, ranging from histories to verse, sometimes combining the two into one. His Later Lays and Lyrics is a potpourri of poems dealing largely but not entirely with local historical themes. "The Markham Elm," for example, eulogizes a "noble," ancient tree that long stood near the Rush-Avon town border. In a footnote regarding its fate, Hosmer writes: "Some wretch, who little regards what is venerable and historic, kindled a fire in its hollow boll. May the curse of the poet, and the malediction of God, rest on him forevermore!" He could be passionate. The poems contained in Later Lays and Lyrics are divided into five sections, including "War Lyrics" (primarily Hosmer's impressions in the recent aftermath of the American Civil War), "Bitter Memories" (personal, themes of loss), and "Cypress Leaves" (death, writ both small and large). As a whole, however, Hosmer's poetry is informed by his family's history of settling Avon, his love for the land, and his reverence for the natives and their lore. He wrote these verses from the vantage point of late life, having witnessed America's 19th-century genocidal first half, through slavery and the Civil War, and into ascendant industrialization. Later Lays and Lyrics casts the history and places of this region in a uniquely lyrical, impactful form. Indeed, in the opening "Sonnet Dedicatory" Hosmer writes: "Love for the Valley of the Genesee, / Of old the red man's favorite domain / Inspired in youth a high heroic strain ..." That inspiration endured, it seems, throughout Hosmer's life and writings.

Download or read book Lays written by Martin L. Gore and published by Jugurtha Harchaoui. This book was released on 2009-04-09 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Short Lyric Poems of Jean Froissart written by Kristen Mossler Figg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, The Short Lyric Poems of Jean Froissart is a meticulous reading of the important but generally neglected short lyric poems of Jean Froissart. The book situates Froissart within the cultural and literary context of fourteenth-century Europe and examines a representative number of his lyric forms (pastourelles, chansons royales, ballades, virelais, and rondeaux) demonstrating their richness of theme and poetic virtuosity. The book provides a readable and reliable English translation, making it possible for English scholars unfamiliar with the original Middle French forms to understand and appreciate the influence Froissart had on Chaucer and other authors of the age. The book focuses on themes, techniques, meters, and rhythms that Froissart employed in his poetry, on how his poetry fits poetic tradition, and on the place of Froissart in literary history.

Book Synopsis "Many a Song and Many a Leccherous Lay" by : Jay Ruud
Download or read book "Many a Song and Many a Leccherous Lay" written by Jay Ruud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992. Although they were apparently much appreciated in his own time, Chaucer’s lyrics have for most of the modern era been the most neglected of his poetic productions. This work offers a comprehensive overview of Chaucer’s lyric corpus. The author extends his scope to include in-depth discussions of literary and cultural influences that have their impact on Chaucer’s lyrics. Students who come to Chaucer’s poems for the first time will here receive an excellent introduction to each poem, the important literary issues surrounding the poem as defined by previous scholarship, and Ruud’s own clear style and balanced judgment. The persuasive proofs for Chaucer’s lyric innovations and his special style of poetry will also be of interest to Chaucerian specialist academics. The book traces Chaucer’s development as a lyric poet, from more conventional early works to more individualized later ones.
