He wrote music for many plays and masques of the time, including several by Shakespeare. Decades after Johnson’s death, in a “Dialogue between the Author and His Lute” within Musick’s Monument and the persona of the Lute, writer and lutenist Thomas Mace described John Dowland and Robert Johnson as “Two famous men; Great Masters in My Art”. Like the piano in the nineteenth century, the lute was not just a popular instrument for solo music making, but was also used widely in ensembles and to accompany singers. Though mainly an instrument of the social elite and the aristocracy, it was also played by the numerous and prosperous burgher class. The first part of the book deals with psalm settings for the lute; the way professional lutenists coped with the harsh rules of the free market; Leiden as a veritable international lute centre; and the different types of lutes that can be reconstructed on the basis of the Dutch paintings of the period. The second part of the book is dedicated to Constantijn Huygens (1596–1687), the well-known poet and statesman, and avid player of, and composer for, the lute. The third and final section deals with Dutch sources of lute music, printed as well as those in manuscript. Taken together, this volume provides a broad and many-layered overview of the lute in the seventeenth century. You just need to learn and practice the right tools. Improvisation is not intimidating at all! Each chapter focuses on a different improvisational approach. When you feel ready, start practising improvising using the exercises given in the book. At first you will probably not be playing in strict time but you will be able to maintain a steady tempo as you become more experienced and confident. In every chapter there is a 'Your turn' section, following the examples. Here you are learning the tools of improvisation and it is important to invest time when it is 'Your turn'. The aim is always to create your own improvisations but if this seems to difficult you could begin by composing some ideas on paper. The book will not deal in great detail with theoretical aspects. These can be found in thousands of books that have already been published. 'The Improvising Lutenist' is written with the lute at hand and is focused on improvising in a contemporary way on scales and modes, grounds and chord progressions. It is written for the six-course renaissance lute but if you have a lute with more courses you can just be creative with the additional basses.
