Download or read book Lunar Science: A Post - Apollo View written by Stuart Ross Taylor and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lunar Science: A Post-Apollo View: Scientific Results and Insights from the Lunar Samples explains the scientific results and discoveries of the manned Apollo lunar missions as they are understood. The emphasis is less on sample description and data and more on the interpretative aspects of the study, with the aim of providing a coherent story of the evolution of the moon and its origin as revealed by the lunar samples and the Apollo missions. This text has seven chapters; the first of which provides a historical background of efforts to study the moon prior to the Apollo missions, including lunar photogeologic mapping and direct exploration by spacecraft. Attention then turns to the Apollo missions and the lunar samples collected, beginning with Apollo 11 that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969 and followed by more missions. The next chapter describes the geology of the moon, with emphasis on craters, central peaks and peak rings, the large ringed basins, rilles, and maria lava flows. The reader is also introduced to the nature of the lunar surface material, the maria basalts, the highlands, and the moon’s interior. This book concludes with a discussion on the evidence that has been gathered by the Apollo missions that offers insights into the origin and evolution of the moon. An epilogue reflects on the usefulness of manned space flight. This book will appeal to lunar scientists as well as to those with an interest in astronomy and space exploration.

Book Synopsis From Cave Man to Cave Martian by : Manfred "Dutch" von Ehrenfried
Download or read book From Cave Man to Cave Martian written by Manfred "Dutch" von Ehrenfried and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the practicality of using the existing subsurface geology on the Moon and Mars for protection against radiation, thermal extremes, micrometeorites and dust storms rather than building surface habitats at great expense at least for those first few missions. It encourages NASA to plan a precursor mission using this concept and employ a “Short Stay” Opposition Class mission to Mars as the first mission rather than the “Long Stay” concept requiring a mission that is too long, too dangerous and too costly for man’s first missions to Mars. Included in these pages is a short history on the uses of caves by early humans over great periods of time. It then describes the ongoing efforts to research caves, pits, tunnels, lava tubes, skylights and the associated technologies that pertain to potential lunar and Mars exploration and habitation. It describes evidence for existing caves and lava tubes on both the Moon and Mars. The work of noted scientists, technologists and roboticists are referenced and described. This ongoing work is moreextensive than one would think and is directly applicable to longer term habitation and exploration of the Moon and Mars. Emphasis is also given to the operational aspects of working and living in lunar and Martian caves and lava tubes.
Book Synopsis Establishing a Permanent Exo-Earth Terrestrial Base by :
Download or read book Establishing a Permanent Exo-Earth Terrestrial Base written by and published by James Martin. This book was released on with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this paper address the program competencies for the Masters of Aeronautical Sciences offered at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The specific program outcomes addressed include the core competencies #1-4 as well as the space studies specialization #11. This proposal is specifically designed to outline the requirements of a future exo-planetary mission to Mars. The root exo- in this research refers to the region outside of Low- or Medium-Earth Orbit that is generally used for current space missions; thus a lunar or Martian surface-base would satisfy this requirement. The proposal focuses on the human factors, including psycho-social behaviors and space medicine; technical requirements, such as life support and communications systems; and mission planning/execution components of a long-duration space mission. Furthermore, the study will analyze the potential future applications of an exo-planetary surface-base in terms of commerce, defense and exploration, including a near-future space tourism.

Download or read book The Moon written by David Schrunk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary book details how the Moon could be used as a springboard for Solar System exploration. It presents a realistic plan for placing and servicing telescopes on the Moon, and highlights the use of the Moon as a base for an early warning system from which to combat threats of near-Earth objects. A realistic vision of human development and settlement of the Moon over the next one hundred years is presented, and the author explains how global living standards for the Earth can be enhanced through the use of lunar-based generated solar power. From that beginning, the people of the Earth would evolve into a spacefaring civilisation.

Book Synopsis Return to the Moon by : Harrison Schmitt
Download or read book Return to the Moon written by Harrison Schmitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former NASA Astronaut Harrison Schmitt advocates a private, investor-based approach to returning humans to the Moon—to extract Helium 3 for energy production, to use the Moon as a platform for science and manufacturing, and to establish permanent human colonies there in a kind of stepping stone community on the way to deeper space. With governments playing a supporting role—just as they have in the development of modern commercial aeronautics and agricultural production—Schmitt believes that a fundamentally private enterprise is the only type of organization capable of sustaining such an effort and, eventually, even making it pay off.
