Book excerpt: Axial strain-controlled tests were performed on five aluminum alloys to provide information on their cyclic behavior. The alloys chosen for this investigation represent a complete survey of the strengthening mechanisms associated with commercial aluminum products. The strengthening microstructures ranged from subgrain and dislocation strengthening in the 1200 alloy, solid solution strengthening by magnesium in the 5083, and the high density of GP zones and finely dispersed precipitates in the case of the 7005, 6351, and 6061 alloys. The five alloys were plant-fabricated with commercial tempers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low cycle fatigue (LCF) and high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties of Al–Li alloys are influenced by alloy composition, microstructural characteristics, tensile stretching prior to artificial aging, and crystallographic texture. In general the fatigue properties, notably the notched HCF resistances, of Al–Li alloys are similar to those of conventional aerospace aluminium alloys. Alloy development programs on newer Al–Li alloys aim to study further the effects of minor alloying additions (rare earths, beryllium, silver and TiB); various thermomechanical treatments; alloy microstructure, notably crystallographic texture and grain size; and the fatigue load history and environment on the mechanical behavior, including the fatigue properties. It is important to note that the occurrence of bilinearity in LCF life-dependence on strain amplitude in most Al–Li alloys engenders the overestimation of the LCF lives in both the hypo-transition (lower strain amplitudes; longer fatigue lives) and hyper-transition (higher strain amplitudes; shorter fatigue lives) regions if the lives are estimated by extrapolation from either of these regions. Further, in cases such as in Al-Li alloys where there are large differences in strength-based (Basquin-like) and plastic strain – based (Coffin-Manson) power-law relationships, it is appropriate to develop an alloy design philosophy based on either plastic strain energy per cycle (Halford-Morrow) or fatigue toughness (total plastic strain energy to fracture). All of these aspects are discussed in detail in this chapter.

Book excerpt: The low cycle fatigue behavior of several age-hardened aluminum alloys with 1% Mg and 1% Si as alloying elements and varying Mn additions of up to 1% was studied. The alloy with the smallest grain size showed the highest strength as well as the highest low cycle fatigue strength. The number of cycles to failure represented by its dependency on strain range did not show any significant differences. However, one could derive from these results that one should try to reduce the number and size of inclusion particles in order to improve fatigue properties. In such a case one can expect that a small grain size of 20 ?m diameter, Mn additions of 0.2 to 0.5%, and a polished surface with a roughness below 0.5 ?m would be beneficial for low cycle fatigue properties.

Book excerpt: Low-cycle flexural fatigue tests, in air and in salt-water environments, were conducted in 1-inch-thick baseplate specimens made of 5086-H116 and 5456-H117 aluminum alloys. The results indicate that the fatigue resistance of both alloys is similar despite strength differences; and that, under the conditions of the test, low-cycle fatigue life is unaffected by the presence of salt water. The baseplate fatigue data will serve as a base line for use in evaluating the fatigue behavior of butt- and tee-weldments fabricated from the same alloys. (Author).

Book excerpt: Tests of fatigue crack initiation are carried out on two different aluminum alloys by using low-cycle fatigue (LCF) data to predict initiation at notch tips with a radius between 0.1 and 10 mm. A comparison of the LCF properties of these alloys in terms of stress strain and cyclic plastic energy is made. Damage accumulation laws in the range of plastic strain and elastic stress are studied. Variable-amplitude loading represented by programmed blocks characterizing the standard TWIST flight loading are investigated. Fatigue crack initiation at notches is determined; initiation is detected by the electric potential method. It is found that the energy approach is an accurate method of determining a realistic cyclic mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. Constant-amplitude loading of low ?K (stress intensity factor range) that causes no crack initiation decreases the number of cycles to crack initiation, when the loading program is composed of a higher ?K and this low ?K to form block loading.

Book excerpt: The effects of environment on fatigue behavior are quite intimately related to such test variables as stress intensity, cyclic frequency, and temperature. The effect of these variables has been shown to be quite complex. However, a consistent pattern of behavior is beginning to emerge which, it is hoped, will lead to a considerably changed understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process. It is considered probable that an increased understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process will also contribute measureably to an improved understanding of general fatigue processes. Material variables such as composition, directionality of properties, and microstructure, have important effects on corrosion-fatigue behavior of aluminum alloys. However, it appears that these variables, at least in gaseous environments, may be important largely because of their effects on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. On the other hand, studies in seawater suggest that these variables become increasingly important as the corrosive nature of the environment increases. This memorandum discusses in detail the effects of both test variables and material variables on corrosion fatigue. In addition, current theories of corrosion-fatigue mechanisms are outlined, and several methods of preventing corrosion fatigue are suggested. (Author).

Book excerpt: A compilation of data collected and maintained for many years as the property of a large aluminum company, which decided in 1997 to make it available to other engineers and materials specialists. In tabular form, presents data on the tensile and creep properties of eight species of wrought alloys and five species of cast alloys in the various shapes used in applications. Then looks at the fatigue data for several alloys under a range of conditions and loads. The data represent the typical or average findings, and though some were developed years ago, the collection is the largest and most detailed available. There is no index.
