Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are excerpts of Charley Beauregard's love letters from his time during World War II, which have been lovingly transcribed by his youngest child. Charley was 22 years old, and had recently graduated from Loyola University, in Chicago, when he was given his naval assignment, in the Fall of 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Shortly before being sent to Pearl Harbor, he had begun dating Ethel. So began a long distance romance through letters, that continued until the end of World War II. Shortly after arriving at Pearl Harbor, in November of 1941, Charley described the territory of Hawaii as a paradise. That image was forever destroyed for him, a few weeks later, on December 7th. Charley and his love, Ethel, were married in October 1943, while his ship was in California, getting an overhaul. After an extended honeymoon, which was highly unusual during the middle of the war, they were not together again until 18 months later. Writing letters was the primary source of communication between the servicemen and their loved ones. This book contains excerpts of his love letters, written throughout his war time experiences. Being able to express his emotions had become his life line to his love back home.

Book excerpt: Paul L. Edwards instilled in his daughter that she could do anything she wanted. He taught her to work hard and play hard. Paula graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Missouri and joined IBM, where she was a manager for many years before taking early retirement. After Paula found her father's World War II letters, she realized they showed her father's love for his wife, and their love created her. So to complete the circle of love Paula compiled all her father's World War II letters as a lasting tribute in "Every Thought of You." Women and men of all ages, lovers, baby boomers, history buffs, and military families will enjoy reading this book of love letters Paul L. Edwards wrote to his bride from training camps and the South Pacific during World War II. They were married November 27, 1941, in Sedalia, Missouri, and on December 7th the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. One year later Paul, a blacksmith who worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad, enlisted in the Navy 88th Construction Battalion ("Seabees") to fight the Japanese and wrote Catherine almost 700 letters, postcards, wires, and V-mail's from December, 1942, to June, 1945. These letters came from Boot Camp in Davisville, RI, two camps in California, and six islands in the South Pacific. After the Marines secured a new island in the South Pacific, Paul's Battalion moved in and built airstrips, roads, and naval bases. Paul belonged to the Masonic Lodge and believed in God, country, and brotherhood. He became an active Christian during Boot Camp. These letters of Paul's true life experiences exemplify: -His patriotism and sacrifices to fight the Japanese who attacked U.S. soil in Hawaii -His love for his wife -His values -The hardships of war on sailors, their families, and friends -The enlisted sailor's view These letters are a piece of history. Always remember the seventh of December! Ten percent of the author's royalties will be donated to Kansas University Endowment, Kansas City, KS, for Parkinson's disease research.

Book excerpt: "'Do you want to see someone totally fulfilled?' The question made news anchor Dianne Derby stop in her tracks. Sitting across from her was Jim Downing, a Christian missionary and veteran who had served as a commander in the US Navy. At the time, he was the second-oldest survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor--a fascinating man with an incredible story. The answer to Jim's question about ultimate fulfillment was too tempting to pass up. Almost every Tuesday for the next five years, Dianne met with Jim, soaking in his straightforward wisdom and gentle encouragement and leaning on him during some of the most difficult and most beautiful moments of her life. Along the way, she began to learn the rhythm and choices of a remarkable man--and the simple faith that guided his steps. The invitation in Two hundred tuesdays is to walk that path with Dianne and Jim--imperfectly and ever forward. And maybe, just maybe, to find true fulfillment along the way." -- Page [4] of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of two Wayne State University students who were separated by World War II, told through the letters that they exchanged. Robert E. Quirk and his future wife, Marianne, were both Wayne State University students when they met and fell in love in 1941, but they were quickly parted when Quirk was drafted. Decades after their marriage and the end of the war, Quirk shares the letters they exchanged during World War II. The letters in When You Come Home paint a vivid picture of the couple's growing personal relationship alongside the politics of wartime, both overseas and on the homefront. As Quirk writes of combat in France and details reactions abroad to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Marianne describes the impact of these events back in Detroit. When You Come Home also reveals personal glimpses of life in the 1940s, as the two exchange everyday stories about their families and the cities they live in and visit, about their studies at Wayne State, and about their jobs. Quirk's letters are presented along with commentary about his experiences at the time, giving the letters additional context and meaning. This volume also includes a foreword by former Detroit Free Press publisher Neal Shine. For readers curious about day-to-day life during World War II, When You Come Home will be a fascinating and personal glimpse into the time period.

Book excerpt: A multifaceted and timely work of nonfiction military and social history, THE SHADOW OF SACRIFICE: The True Story of a Pearl Harbor Survivor and his Nephew and Namesake redeems an outstanding "Debt of Honor." Seventy-five years ago, "Remember Pearl Harbor!" was the poignant and powerful slogan which rallied a badly shaken nation and galvanized the American people to win World War II. On December 7, 1941 twenty-seven year old Private First Class Joseph J. Deignan of Worcester Massachusetts (pronounced DEGGNAN) was strafed by low-flying Japanese war planes while he was serving as an Army Field Artilleryman at Schofield Barracks on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Little more than two months later, Deignan was dead. His mother believed that her youngest son, baptized as Donald, succumbed to wounds received as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor and its military environs. After World War II Donald's oldest brother, Frank, a U.S. Army veteran of the Pacific Campaign, came home, married, and fathered a son. Frank named that boy "Donald" in memory of his lost, heroic youngest brother. Donald Joseph's "supreme sacrifice" has positively influenced the life and career of his nephew and namesake. In fact, the bequest of his uncle's name has proven to be both a talisman and a blessing to Don Deignan, the author of this book. Although the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is the pivotal event in THE SHADOW OF SACRIFICE, this work is not primarily about that occurrence. Rather, chance, choice and consequence are the themes which inextricably link two spiritually connected lives together over the span of much more than a century. From their impoverished family origins in pre-Famine Ireland down to the present day, Donald Joseph Deignan and his nephew, Don Deignan, have been bound together by ties of Faith, shared adversity, abiding love and mutual loyalty. Donald Joseph grew up in poverty and endured unemployment after which he met a sudden and violen

Book excerpt: This work is designed as a reference tool for researchers investigating the what, when, and why of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The book provides, for the first time, a cross-referencing and indexing of the total record of testimony and evidence that was compiled and published by the U.S. Congress following U.S. investigations into the Pearl Harbor attack. Transcripts from the postwar hearings contain significant information about the diplomatic background of the hostilities, the first look at the crypto-analytic activities of the U.S. military, and many of the communications between Washington D.C. and Pearl Harbor. Eyewitness accounts of the Japanese attack and information on the United States response to the attack are also found in these records. The many hundreds of citations for such persons as President Roosevelt, Cordell Hull, and Admiral Stark are generated from nearly 30,000 pages of testimony and evidential material, and have been assembled into main and subcategories to aid the researcher. The citations involving President Roosevelt, for example, are made up of over 50 subcategories. This work cites all persons connected to the Pearl Harbor attack, all ships involved, and it contains many letters, memoranda, messages, and dispatches which are listed chronologically. To distinguish ship names from people, warships from merchant ships, and people from places, the Index uses the various type fonts that appeared in Samuel Eliot Morison's Vol. 15 (General Index) of The History of United States Naval Operations in World War II. This volume is suitable for Government Deposit libraries, college and research libraries, public libraries, and federal government offices.

Book excerpt: On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese were bombing Pearl Harbor, Tracy Sugarman was a young man studying to be an illustrator--and falling in love with a tawny-haired girl named June. But for Tracy, as for all Americans, everything changed that December dawn. Two years later, now married to June, Tracy was on a troopship bound for England, part of the massive Allied buildup for the liberation of Europe. On D-Day he landed on Utah Beach, one young ensign in the greatest military invasion in history. But Tracy Sugarman was not only a sailor. He was also an artist, who chronicled every aspect of his war in watercolors and sketches and in more than four hundred letters to his wife, who carefully saved everything her new husband sent her. Fifty years later, June Sugarman astonished her husband by showing him his long-forgotten pictures and words: lush watercolors and pen-and-ink drawings set down with breathtaking immediacy in the midst of war, and letters in which the young man poured out his feelings--about the terror and tedium of battle, his own ideals and hopes . . . and, always, his love for his wife. Here, selected from this treasure trove, are the drawings and watercolors that best portray the war Tracy Sugarman experienced. Interspersed throughout are excerpts of his loving and poignant letters home and, as the capstone of this extraordinary book, the single surviving letter from June to her husband. My War is a luminous, powerful account of a world at war--and a beautifully touching love story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 18, 1942, barely one hundred days after Japan’s devastating “surprise attack” on the United States Navy’s Pacific Fleet based at Pearl Harbor, a group of American soldiers were guarding a beach on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Oahu against an expected Japanese amphibious invasion. The atmosphere was tense. Suddenly, a gunshot shattered the almost perfect silence of that tropical night. In its aftermath, one young American soldier lay dead not far from the beach he was guarding. But who was he? And what were the circumstances which had led to his tragic death? The Shadow of Sacrifice answers these questions and, in the process, tells the compelling and poignant story of the way in which that single gunshot has echoed down through the generations of one typical American family. Here is a mystery, a tragedy, a kind of love-story, a tale of survival and transformation, and the unfolding record of promises made and kept. The young American soldier who died mysteriously on that Hawaiian beach in 1942 was my beloved uncle, Private First Class Donald Joseph John Deignan, for whom I was proudly named. Our lives have always been closely and positively connected. Here, just in time for the 75th Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor Attack, is a thorough examination of the unbreakable and mutually beneficial bonds of love and loyalty which still unite us today. Veterans and their families, Baby-boomers, immigrants and people with disabilities will all find themselves reflected in our particular story.
