Book excerpt: "Chilling...this terrific novel is...propelled by an iron-tight plot that becomes increasingly tense." --New York Times Book Review "It’s a nerve-shredding, emotionally harrowing ride. Don’t miss it.” —Megan Abbott, New York Times bestselling author The USA Today bestselling and Edgar Award–winning author of Never Look Back and If I Die Tonight asks how far a grieving mother will go to right a tragic wrong in this propulsive novel of psychological suspense. Camille Gardener is a grieving—and angry—mother who, five years after her daughter’s death, is still obsessed with the privileged young man she believes to be responsible. When her rash actions draw the attention of a secret group of women—the collective— Camille is drawn into a dark web where these mothers share their wildly different stories of loss as well as their desire for justice in a world where privilege denies accountability. Fueled by mutual rage, the collective members devise and act out retribution fantasies via precise, anonymous, highly coordinated revenge killings. As Camille struggles to comprehend whether this is a role-playing exercise or terrifying reality, she must decide if these women are truly avenging angels or monsters. Becoming more deeply enmeshed in the group, Camille learns truths about the collective—and about herself—that she may not be able to survive

Book excerpt: "Using bedtime stories as cautionary tales, a Wrist Scholar relays the story of a fabled group of fathers coping with dead and missing daughters. When the girl sacrifices everything to send a final message to her father through her art and one lost girl is revealed to be not dead or missing but a daughter who has transitioned into a son, fathers are faced with the reality that their children's "play" is anything but. Caught in a strange loop that-like Escher's "Drawing Hands"-confuses the line between reality and artifice, folklore and scholarship, far past and near future, The Lost Daughter Collective illustrates how the stories we receive are shaped by those who do the telling. A story about the complex relationship between fathers and daughters as well as the ethics of storytelling, The Lost Daughter Collective is a gothic fairy tale fusing the fabulism at work in Donald Barthleme and Ben Marcus with the brevity and language play of Rikki Ducornet and Jenny Offill to raise questions about agency and authorship in our narratives"--

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestselling series A USA TODAY bestselling series A California Young Reader Medal–winning series In this riveting series opener, a telepathic girl must figure out why she is the key to her brand-new world before the wrong person finds the answer first. Twelve-year-old Sophie has never quite fit into her life. She’s skipped multiple grades and doesn’t really connect with the older kids at school, but she’s not comfortable with her family, either. The reason? Sophie’s a Telepath, someone who can read minds. No one knows her secret—at least, that’s what she thinks… But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she’s not alone. He’s a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well…she isn’t. Fitz opens Sophie’s eyes to a shocking truth, and she is forced to leave behind her family for a new life in a place that is vastly different from what she has ever known. But Sophie still has secrets, and they’re buried deep in her memory for good reason: The answers are dangerous and in high-demand. What is her true identity, and why was she hidden among humans? The truth could mean life or death—and time is running out.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the website that the New York Times hailed as "redefining mourning," this book is a fresh and irreverent examination into navigating grief and resilience in the age of social media, offering comfort and community for coping with the mess of loss through candid original essays from a variety of voices, accompanied by gorgeous two-color illustrations and wry infographics. At a time when we mourn public figures and national tragedies with hashtags, where intimate posts about loss go viral and we receive automated birthday reminders for dead friends, it’s clear we are navigating new terrain without a road map. Let’s face it: most of us have always had a difficult time talking about death and sharing our grief. We’re awkward and uncertain; we avoid, ignore, or even deny feelings of sadness; we offer platitudes; we send sympathy bouquets whittled out of fruit. Enter Rebecca Soffer and Gabrielle Birkner, who can help us do better. Each having lost parents as young adults, they co-founded Modern Loss, responding to a need to change the dialogue around the messy experience of grief. Now, in this wise and often funny book, they offer the insights of the Modern Loss community to help us cry, laugh, grieve, identify, and—above all—empathize. Soffer and Birkner, along with forty guest contributors including Lucy Kalanithi, singer Amanda Palmer, and CNN’s Brian Stelter, reveal their own stories on a wide range of topics including triggers, sex, secrets, and inheritance. Accompanied by beautiful hand-drawn illustrations and witty "how to" cartoons, each contribution provides a unique perspective on loss as well as a remarkable life-affirming message. Brutally honest and inspiring, Modern Loss invites us to talk intimately and humorously about grief, helping us confront the humanity (and mortality) we all share. Beginners welcome.

Book excerpt: In a roundabout way, the Lost Whole Moose has come to represent the exploration of all that is really enjoyable about living in the Yukon--it's delights and challenges as well as its hardships. The Lost Moose is really a kind of quest, and includes the discoveries that people make along the way. It is the search for the perfect northern lifestyle. As legend has it, the search takes people down many paths. Some have been here seemingly forever. Others start by spending just a winter, learning to deal with the cold and heating with wood. They may become fascinated with the northern lights, find enjoyment in going for walks at 40 below and start thinking about building a place of their own someday. Then it's the summertime exploration of rivers and forest, reveling 'neath the midnight sun, trying to get a piece of land and learning about land claims and politics. Along the way learning bush crafts and skills needed to cope with town life. As the revelations continue, people are exposed to the many styles of life which are available in this land, including the relaxed practice of horizontal living. As horizontalists, whether full-time, part-time or just sometimes, they learn to enjoy a state of bliss with this life and this land. Experience (and legend) tells us this land is not for everyone; many people arrive and many leave. But for those who like what is here, it seems they keep on liking it. Their search for their Lost Moose, as legend would have it, is still in progress, and that's what this book is all about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument that individuals and collectives form memories by analogous processes and a case study of collective retrograde amnesia. We form individual memories by a process known as consolidation: the conversion of immediate and fleeting bits of information into a stable and accessible representation of facts and events. These memories provide a version of the past that helps us navigate the present and is critical to individual identity. In this book, Thomas Anastasio, Kristen Ann Ehrenberger, Patrick Watson, and Wenyi Zhang propose that social groups form collective memories by analogous processes. Using facts and insights from neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and history, they describe a single process of consolidation with analogous—not merely comparable—manifestations on any level, whether brain, family, or society. They propose a three-in-one model of memory consolidation, composed of a buffer, a relator, and a generalizer, all within the consolidating entity, that can explain memory consolidation phenomena on individual and collective levels. When consolidation is disrupted by traumatic injury to a brain structure known as the hippocampus, memories in the process of being consolidated are lost. In individuals, this is known as retrograde amnesia. The authors hypothesize a "social hippocampus" and argue that disruption at the collective level can result in collective retrograde amnesia. They offer the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) as an example of trauma to the social hippocampus and present evidence for the loss of recent collective memory in mainland Chinese populations that experienced the Cultural Revolution.

Book excerpt: Since the day Donald Trump announced his presidential campaign, the left has waged a demented war against him. Liberals used to pride themselves on their ultra-hipness, but Trump has turned them into weeping little girls in pink party dresses. The very people who once mocked right-wingers for (allegedly) overreacting to every little thing are now the ones hyperventilating and hatching insane conspiracy theories. During the campaign, and even more so after his victory, the left went nuts. Everything Trump does sends them into a moral panic. Everything is a constitutional crisis. Members of the self-proclaimed "Resistance" -- journalists, politicians, professors, judges, comedians, movie stars, Twitter pundits, even Oprah and Lindsey Vonn! -- are literally shaking because Trump is literally Hitler! Now Ann Coulter skewers the various elements of "The Resistance" -- the pussy-hat brigade, the Russian-collusion witch hunters, the media alarmists, the campus hysterics, and more. They talk about Russia? They're the ones meddling with our democracy by trying to overturn the results of the election with their relentless attacks. The biggest result of the Trump era may be our cultural institutions' total loss of credibility.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE A haunting book by a poet whose voice speaks of all our lifetimes Louise Glück’s thirteenth book is among her most haunting. Here as in the Wild Iris there is a chorus, but the speakers are entirely human, simultaneously spectral and ancient. Winter Recipes from the Collective is chamber music, an invitation into that privileged realm small enough for the individual instrument to make itself heard, dolente, its line sustained, carried, and then taken up by the next instrument, spirited, animoso, while at the same time being large enough to contain a whole lifetime, the inconceivable gifts and losses of old age, the little princesses rattling in the back of a car, an abandoned passport, the ingredients of an invigorating winter sandwich, a sister’s death, the joyful presence of the sun, its brightness measured by the darkness it casts. “Some of you will know what I mean,” the poet says, by which she means, some of you will follow me. Hers is the sustaining presence, the voice containing all our lifetimes, “all the worlds, each more beautiful than the last.” This magnificent book couldn’t have been written by anyone else, nor could it have been written by the poet at any other time in her life.

Ulin asks a number of timely questions - why is literature important? What does it offer, especially now? Blending commentary with memoir, Ulin addresses the importance of the simple act of reading in an increasingly digital culture. Reading a book, flipping through hard pages, or shuffling them on screen - it doesn't matter. The key is the act of reading, and it's seriousness and depth. Ulin emphasizes the importance of reflection and pause allowed by stopping to read a book, and the accompanying focus required to let the mind run free in a world that is not one's own. Are we willing to risk our collective interest in contemplation, nuanced thinking, and empathy? Far from preaching to the choir, The Lost Art of Reading is a call to arms, or rather, to pages.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book A Daily Beast Best Book of the Year A Huffington Post Best Book of the Year From elementary school on, Walter Kirn knew how to stay at the top of his class: He clapped erasers, memorized answer keys, and parroted his teachers’ pet theories. But when he launched himself eastward to an Ivy League university, Kirn discovered that the temple of higher learning he had expected was instead just another arena for more gamesmanship, snobbery, and social climbing. In this whip-smart memoir of kissing-up, cramming, and competition, Lost in the Meritocracy reckons the costs of an educational system where the point is simply to keep accumulating points and never to look back—or within.

Book excerpt: In September 2020 a call went out across social media for people to write about their experiences of grief. The invitation was open to all and people were asked to discuss what grief meant to them and how it has affected their lives to date. This project became 'The Grief Collective: Stories of Life, Loss & Learning to Heal.' The idea for this book originally came from the author's own experiences when her Father was palliatively unwell. It was during this time that she informally considered she had a 'Dead Dad Club.' The Club comprised a group of friends and colleagues who understood grief. Their messages and validation were such an invaluable source of support to her that she wanted to recreate the same for people who didn't have ready access to such empathic, supportive, grief-informed people in real life. The Grief Collective is exactly that - an opportunity for readers to learn about grief and be supported with it by the experts - the people who have experienced it. The Grief Collective: Stories of Life, Loss & Learning to Heal is a collection of personal, real life stories from people who have grieved or are grieving. The stories depict grief, bereavement and even the most difficult aspects of grief including complex / complicated grief, whereby the grief response extends beyond typical clinical expectations. The narratives describe how grief can be an entirely destabilising experience to endure. Each story is told in the unique style of the person who wrote it. The 54 story contributors talk about what helped them to cope at the time and since. They also describe helpful resources such as therapies, support groups and books. The Grief Collective includes a wide variety of grief themes including; cancer, dementia, stroke, suicide, loss of a relationship, miscarriage / stillbirth, accidental death, death of pets and the death of people whom relationships were difficult when they were alive. Some people discuss that their grief caused them to see life differently and / or to take positive steps to reduce stigma or raise funds to support and benefit others. We all have differing responses to grief. It seems society often has set ways to respond to people who are grieving. Recurrent themes include people being offered initial condolences but then being somewhat left to 'get on with it' as people don't want to upset them. This just isn't the reality of grief, there are many layers and stages to it and talking really seems to help even if the 'problem' can't be fixed. This book is for people who are grieving, have grieved, or for people who would like to learn more about how to support those who are grieving. It has a broad appeal and could be used by health professionals too. The Grief collective builds a truly modern and diverse picture of grief and allows readers to feel validated and normalised in their experiences. If you're struggling with grief or know someone who is then it is highly likely that some of the things you're feeling are also described within this book. Themes discussed include juggling family life, mental health and COVID-19. The contributors range in age from late teens to 70's and are from across the U.K and internationally too. The author, Dr Marianne Trent is a Clinical Psychologist in The NHS & in Private Practice. She specialises in Trauma, Grief, Anxiety & Depression. This is Marianne's first book although she also appears in Amy Brown's 'Let's Talk About The First Year of Parenting' book. Marianne is a regular blogger, writing about mental health related topics and concepts. She has been interviewed live on the BBC News and written for The Guardian, Platinum Magazine and Grazia Daily.
