Se pretende con ello poner a disposición de olivareros, técnicos y personas interesadas en el cultivo de esta especie los conocimientos que existen sobre el suelo como medio de cultivo del olivo, y la forma de practicar la fertilización en diferentes condiciones del medio, y específicamente, en el olivar cultivado en zonas calcáreas. En el texto se pone énfasis en describir la aptitud del suelo para el cultivo del olivo, y se detallan sus propiedades con especial referencia a la fertilidad. El lector encontrará también en estos capítulos la forma de tomar muestras de suelo y de hoja para su posterior análisis y de interpretar los resultados del mismo, lo que le permitirá tomar las decisiones más adecuadas en cada situación. Se describen, asimismo, un amplio conjunto de suelos de naturaleza calcárea donde se cultiva el olivo y las características del olivar asentando en ellos, todo ello ilustrado con fotografías de perfiles característicos del suelo y del paisaje en donde se ubican. La concepción de esta obra representa un ejemplo claro del esfuerzo en I+D que se está desarrollando en España. Su redacción ha sido posible gracias a la información recopilada como consecuencia del desarrollo del proyectos de transferencia de tecnología, que fueron financiados conjuntamente por organismos públicos y por el sector oleícola. Es, en definitiva, un ejemplo de aprovechamiento de recursos financieros, materiales y humanos que ha dado como resultado una información valiosa al sector productivo para la optimización de las técnicas aplicables en el olivar.

Book excerpt: Esta investigación que tiene por objetivos estudiar las características de los suelos y su relación con la productividad del olivar, además de identificar los suelos mas apropiados y estudiar las principales limitantes de los mismos. Se han estudiado 35 perfiles y 63 sondeos, los cuales fueron seleccionados, muestreados y analizados de acuerdo a las metodologías oficiales. De este estudio se establece que los suelos de la zona son poco desarrollados, la gran mayoría presenta problemas de fertilidad, con niveles bajos de nitrógeno fósforo, y potasio, principalmente, estas deficiencias se traducen al cultivo afectando su rendimiento. En cuanto a los principales limitantes destaca la profundidad efectiva, disponibilidad de agua, edad del olivar y la localización de cultivos en alta pendiente; los problemas de erosión se acentúan en los suelos menos desarrollados, y en cuanto a la contaminación no se detectan mayores problemas. En conclusión los mejores suelos para el desarrollo del cultivo del olivar son los cambisoles calcaricos y los menos apropiados los leptosoles calcaricos, y de acuerdo a los diferentes sistemas de evaluación, la distribución porcentual de suelos aptos para el cultivo es muy baja.

Water repellency has been reported in most continents of the world for varying land uses and climatic conditions. Soil water repellency often leads to severe runoff and erosion, rapid leaching of surface-applied agrichemicals, and losses of water and nutrient availability for crops. At present, no optimum management strategies exist for water repellent soils, focusing on minimizing environmental risks while maintaining crop production. The book starts with a historical overview of water repellency research, followed by seven thematic sections covering 26 research chapters. The first section discusses the origin, the second the assessment, and the third the occurrence and hydrological implications of soil water repellency. Silicon is also the only element that does not damage plants when accumulated in excess. However, the contribution of Si to plant growth has been largely ignored due to its universal existence in the earth's crust. From numerous intensive studies on Si, initiated in Japan about 80 years ago, Japanese scientists realized that Si was important for the healthy growth of rice and for stability of rice production. In a worldwide first, silicon was recognized as a valuable fertilizer in Japan. The beneficial effects of Si on rice growth in particular, are largely attributable to the characteristics of a silica gel that is accumulated on the epidermal tissues in rice. These effects are expressed most clearly under high-density cultivation systems with heavy applications of nitrogen. Si is therefore recognized now as an ''agronomically essential element'' in Japan.Recently, Si has become globally important because it generates resistance in many plants to diseases and pests, and may contribute to reduced rates of application of pesticides and fungicides.
