Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psalms--the prayers of the chosen people, the prayers of the people of God--have a spontaneity and timeless pertinence which is unique. They are an integral part of Christian liturgies; yet they pose difficulties for many who sense that they have sprung from a cultural milieu which is totally alien to our own. This problem can only be solved by a careful study of their origins, their literary structures, their content, and their intent. A vast literature has grown up around the psalter. But modern biblical discoveries, research, and scholarship have opened the way to a greater understanding and finer appreciation of the inspired prayers. The author, one of the leading exegetes of our time, has produced a monumental and comprehensive work which reflects his vast research and erudite judgment. The scholar and the biblical student will find this thorough treatment invaluable. And educated men of all religions, who share a common invaluable scriptural tradition, should also find it essentially helpful and enlightening. This many-faceted work clearly illustrates that biblical scholarship knows no denominational boundaries. The psalter is a bridge of prayer in this ecumenical age, and readers will find the author's insights and analyses most helpful in making the psalms more vital in their lives and a more unifying bond in man's search for God in our time.

Book excerpt: "Pastoral Themes and Forms in Cervantes's Fiction explores the various pastoral dimensions of Cervantes's art, from his early Galatea, which is a pastoral novel, to his masterful Don Quijote de la Mancha. Dominick Finello here focuses on the pastoral's impact on the composition of Don Quijote: its rural backdrop of a rustic Spain; the literary inheritance of its characters and style; its dialogic structure, which reflects that of the pastoral novel; and the vital stimulus produced by Cervantes's direct observation of the effects of imaginative pastoral disguises and mimetic play on its characters, including bucolic games, the representation of eclogues and masques, and other such diversions. The blending of pastoral themes and forms into his fiction has led Cervantes to ring major changes on conventional patterns of the pastoral." "The pastoral's congenial interaction with the creativity of Don Quijote is apparent in the novel's settings and character conception. With regard to the settings, pastoral style in the Quijote focuses specifically on the geographical configuration and rural backdrop of Don Quijote's adventures and eventually places them in the context of the history of pastoral nomadism on the Iberian peninsula. With regard to characters, shepherds, goatherds, farmers, and other rural people appear everywhere in the Quijote; and Sancho Panza is the leading rustic personage from this group. Sancho's felicitous projection of pastoral life reflects his fundamental optimism. Don Quijote is linked to the literary shepherd through his discourse on the golden age, his imitation of the lovelord shepherd in the Sierra Morena episode of part 1, and the "Pastor Quijotiz" scheme, which signals his demise late in part 2. Dulcinea, Don Quijote's beloved, is conceived with both the rustic and literary dimensions of the pastoral heroine." "One of the essential features of the Quijote is its dialogic structure, which reflects that of the Renaissance academic colloquium and that of the pastoral novel. Another vital pastoral stimulus of Cervantes's art is his direct observation of the effects of imaginative pastoral disguises and mimetic play on his characters. The documented social customs involving pastoral mimesis (such as eclogues, masques, and games) indicate that pastoral expression and values have been integrated to a significant degree into the fabric of the lives of Cervantes's characters." "Cervantes's attitude toward the pastoral may be established through direct statements he made about pastoral authors, poems, and books. It may also be constituted through less direct means - such as the abrupt conclusion and subsequent disappearance of pastoral stories from the main narrative of the Quijote."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary History: Towards a Global Perspective is a research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). Initiated in 1996 and launched in 1999, it aims at finding suitable methods and approaches for studying and analysing literature globally, emphasizing the comparative and intercultural aspect. Even though we nowadays have fast and easy access to any kind of information on literature and literary history, we encounter, more than ever, the difficulty of finding a credible overall perspective on world literary history. Until today, literary cultures and traditions have usually been studied separately, each field using its own principles and methods. Even the conceptual basis itself varies from section to section and the genre concepts employed are not mutually compatible. As a consequence, it is very difficult, if not impossible, for the interested layperson as well as for the professional student, to gain a clear and fair perspective both on the literary traditions of other peoples and on one's own traditions. The project can be considered as a contribution to gradually removing this problem and helping to gain a better understanding of literature and literary history by means of a concerted empirical research and deeper conceptual reflection. The contributions to the four volumes are written in English by specialists from a large number of disciplines, primarily from the fields of comparative literature, Oriental studies and African studies in Sweden. All of the literary texts discussed in the articles are in the original language. Each one of the four volumes is devoted to a special research topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latin American short story has often been viewed in terms of its relation to orality, tradition and myth. But this desire to celebrate the difference of Latin American culture unwittingly contributes to its exoticization, failing to do justice to its richness, complexity and contemporaneity. By re-reading and re-viewing the short stories of Juan Rulfo, Julio Cortazar and Augusto Monterroso, Bell reveals the hybridity of this genre. It is at once rooted in traditional narrative and fragmented by modern experience; its residual qualities are revived through emergent forms. Crucially, its oral and mythical characteristics are compounded with the formal traits of modern, emerging media: photography, cinema, telephony, journalism, and cartoon art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of major figures, texts, and periods in Spanish literature prior to 1700. It applies - and interrogates - modern critical theory. Contributing to its cohesiveness are the time span addressed (1330-1630) and the emphasis throughout on literary tradition and critical approaches. It is inspired partly by Ramiro de Maeztu's 1926 monograph, Don Quixote, Don Juan y la Celestina, devoted to the three characters Maeztu felt to be the most important in the Spanish literary canon. include Celestina. The volume is divided into three parts. The first of these deals with Don Quixote, the second centers around the Don Juan figure created by Tirso de Molina, while the third ventures farther back in time to treat the major texts of the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries, along with the problematic period concepts Renaissance and Baroque. James A. Parr is Professor of Spanish at the University of California, Riverside.
