Book excerpt: In this paper we review the most recent experimental results of the Los Alamos free-electron laser program. Three major effects will be described: lasing at improved efficiency over that previously attained, electron beam improvement, and energy recovery. An extraction efficiency of 2% was achieved with a wiggler having a 12% wavelength taper. The beam has been improved so that limits to its quality are now caused, not by injector performance, but by wake fields related to the high peak currents achieved. Limits to optical power are set by mirror damage. Experiments are described that demonstrate the successful operation of an energy recovery system. 17 refs., 10 figs., 3 tabs.

Book excerpt: The Los Alamos free electron (FEL) laser oscillator has successfully operated over a wavelength range from 9 to 11 .mu.m with a peak output power of 5 MW and an average output power of 6 kW over a 70-.mu.s pulse length. The FEL is driven by a conventional rf linear accelerator operating at 1.3 GHz with a nominal energy of 20 MeV. Particularly important parts of the beamline are the electron gun, the subharmonic and fundamental-bunching systems, the accelerator, the feedback controllers, the steering and focusing systems, the Cherenkov radiators used as beam-position monitors, and the slow and fast deflectors used with the diagnostic spectrometer at the exit of the beamline. We will discuss problems and present the performance of these components. 10 references, 12 figures, 2 tables.

Book excerpt: During the past year the Los Alamos free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator has demonstrated high peak and average power (10 MW and 6 kW), broad-wavelength tunability (9 to 35 .mu.m), and near-ideal optical quality (0.9 Strehl ratio). An electron energy-extraction efficiency of 1% was measured. The predicted production of synchrotron sidebands also was observed in the broadened optical spectrum. As shorter wavelengths and higher powers are pursued, higher currents with improved beam quality will be required. Advanced injectors and energy-recovery systems are being developed to meet these demands. 17 refs., 6 figs., 3 tabs.

The accelerator is now being tuned with very promising performance. The above experiments will be completed during the next year.

This FEL, which will incorporate many of the new technologies developed over the last decade, will be compact in size, robust, and user-friendly. Electrons produced by a photocathode will be accelerated to 20 MeV by a high-brightness accelerator and transported using permanent-magnet quadrupoles and dipoles. They will form an electron beam with an excellent instantaneous beam quality of 10 [pi] mm mrad in transverse emittance and 0.3% in energy spread at a peak current up to 300 A. Including operation at higher harmonics, the laser wavelength extends form 3.7 [mu]m to 0.4 [mu]m. In this paper, we will describe the project and the programs to date. 10 refs., 10 figs., 1 tab.

In this paper, we discuss measurements of electron-beam transport during decelerations greater than 70% from 21 MeV down to 5 MeV. Power-flow measurements demonstrate the efficient conversion of beam power back into rf power and its reuse in the accelerator. We also describe instabilities of the system and compare them with simulations.

Book excerpt: The applications of ''streak systems'' that provide time-resolved diagnostic data for the Los Alamos free-electron laser energy recovery experiments have been extended in the last year. We have used these systems with time resolutions of 10 .mu.s, approx. 20 ps, and 2 to 8 ps to address both macropulse and micropulse issues. As one example, the time-dependent extraction efficiency behavior during the macropulse is presented. In addition, the effects on the electron micropulse temporal shape of several accelerator parameters have been studied. These results include the evidence of electron beam peak currents that approach 200 A.

Although the previously reported results were in agreement with theory, the data were plagued by gain fluctuations, and no spectral measurements had been obtained. Since then, the source of the fluctuations has been analyzed and substantially reduced. Also, the optical power and spectra dependence on beam emittance, alignment, cavity length, energy spread, and current were systematically studied. This paper reports on the results obtained with a uniform-period wiggler. 3 refs., 14 figs., 2 tabs.

Book excerpt: Free-electron lasers (FELs) for the vacuum-ultraviolet and soft x-ray spectral regions (together termed the XUV) are being designed at Los Alamos for integration into a future national UV/XUV FEL user facility for scientific experimentation. As proposed, this facility would consist of a sequence of up to 15 FEL oscillators and amplifiers, driven by a single, rf-linear accelerator, that will generate broadly tunable, picosecond-pulse, coherent radiation over the range from 1 to 400 nm. Below 300 nm, the peak- and average-power output of these FEL devices should surpass the capabilities of any existing, continuously tunable photon sources by many orders-of-magnitude. We describe the design parameters and predicted output of these FELs and make comparison with synchrotron radiation sources. Brief mention is given to our recent progress in developing the three primary components (electron beam, magnetic undulator, and resonator mirrors). 30 refs., 2 figs., 3 tabs.
