Book Synopsis Lorentz and Poincar Invariance by : Jong-Ping Hsu
Download or read book Lorentz and Poincar Invariance written by Jong-Ping Hsu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers provides a broad view of the development of Lorentz and Poincar(r) invariance and spacetime symmetry throughout the past 100 years. The issues explored in these papers include: (1) formulations of relativity theories in which the speed of light is not a universal constant but which are consistent with the four-dimensional symmetry of the Lorentz and Poincar(r) groups and with experimental results, (2) analyses and discussions by Reichenbach concerning the concepts of simultaneity and physical time from a philosophical point of view, and (3) results achieved by the union of the relativity and quantum theories, marking the beginnings of quantum electrodynamics and relativistic quantum mechanics. Ten of the fundamental experiments testing special relativity are also discussed, showing that they actually support a four-dimensional spacetime based on broad Lorentz and Poincar(r) invariance which is more general than and includes the special theory of relativity. The generalization of the concepts of simultaneity, physical time and the nature of the speed of light within a four-dimensional spacetime framework leads to the conclusion that the symmetries embodied by the special theory of relativity can be realized using only a single postulate OCo the principle of relativity for physical laws. Contents: Theoretical Implications of Lorentz and Poincar(r) Invariance: The Dawn of Lorentz and Poincar(r) Invariance (1887OCo1905): Inquiries Regarding the Constancy of the Speed of Light (1908-1910); The Splendid Union of Special Relativity and Quantum Mechanics (1927OCo1949); The Isotropy of the Speed of Light c: A Convenient Assumption (1963OCo1995); The Logically Simplest Theory of Relativity and Its 4-Dimensional Symmetry (1990OCo1994); Experiments for Lorentz and Poincar(r) Invariance: The Fizeau Experiment; The WilsonOCoWilson Experiment; The Observation of the Muon Lifetime Dilation; The MassOCoVelocity Relation Experiment; The Thomas Precession Experiment; and other papers. Book Synopsis A Broader View of Relativity by : Jong-Ping Hsu
Download or read book A Broader View of Relativity written by Jong-Ping Hsu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Broader View of Relativity shows that there is still new life in old physics. The book examines the historical context and theoretical underpinnings of Einstein's theory of special relativity and describes Broad Relativity, a generalized theory of coordinate transformations between inertial reference frames that includes Einstein's special relativity as a special case. It shows how the principle of relativity is compatible with multiple concepts of physical time and these different procedures for clock synchronization can be useful for thinking about different physical problems, including many-body systems and the development of a Lorentz-invariant thermodynamics. Broad relativity also provides new answers to old questions such as the necessity of postulating the constancy of the speed of light and the viability of Reichenbach's general concept of time. The book also draws on the idea of limiting-four-dimensional symmetry to describe coordinate transformations and the physics of particles and fields in non-inertial frames, particularly those with constant linear accelerations. This new edition expands the discussion on the role that human conventions and unit systems have played in the historical development of relativity theories and includes new results on the implications of broad relativity for clarifying the status of constants that are truly fundamental and inherent properties of our universe. Contents: Special Relativity is NOT Incorrect!; Space, Time, and Inertial Frames; The Novel Creation of the Young Einstein; Experimental Tests; Group Properties; Common Relativity and Quantum Mechanics; Extended Relativity; Dynamics of Classical and Quantum Particles; Group and Lie Algebra Properties of Accelerated Transformation of Spacetime; Graphic Representations of the Geometry of Spacetime in Accelerated Frames; Two Rocketships with Constant-Linear Acceleration; On a Gauge Theory of Gravity with Translation Gauge Symmetry in Inertial and Non-Inertial Frames; Appendices: Technical Aspects of Extended Relativity; Coordinate Transformations for Rotating Frames; and other papers. Key Features Includes five new chapters A complete and comprehensive description of Broad Relativity, which generalizes Einstein's original theory of special relativity to new physical time systems and a limited class of non-inertial frames Brings a fresh viewpoint with new physical implications and predictions to old physics Gives an updated discussion on fundamental physical constants and unit systems and their influence on the development of relativity theories Readership: Researchers in the field of relativity theory and advanced undergraduate students as a supplementary text.

To simplify historical search many original articles written during the early days of relativity are included here as English translations, which can be very useful to the readers. Of particular interest is the role of Woldemar Voigt (1850–1919) on the emergence of relativity, which is being given its proper place here. Book Synopsis Physics of the Lorentz Group by : Sibel Baskal
Download or read book Physics of the Lorentz Group written by Sibel Baskal and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the Lorentz mathematical group in a language familiar to physicists. While the three-dimensional rotation group is one of the standard mathematical tools in physics, the Lorentz group of the four-dimensional Minkowski space is still very strange to most present-day physicists. It plays an essential role in understanding particles moving at close to light speed and is becoming the essential language for quantum optics, classical optics, and information science. The book is based on papers and books published by the authors on the representations of the Lorentz group based on harmonic oscillators and their applications to high-energy physics and to Wigner functions applicable to quantum optics. It also covers the two-by-two representations of the Lorentz group applicable to ray optics, including cavity, multilayer and lens optics, as well as representations of the Lorentz group applicable to Stokes parameters and the Poincaré sphere on polarization optics.
Book Synopsis Theory and Applications of the Poincaré Group by : Young Suh Kim
Download or read book Theory and Applications of the Poincaré Group written by Young Suh Kim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special relativity and quantum mechanics, formulated early in the twentieth century, are the two most important scientific languages and are likely to remain so for many years to come. In the 1920's, when quantum mechanics was developed, the most pressing theoretical problem was how to make it consistent with special relativity. In the 1980's, this is still the most pressing problem. The only difference is that the situation is more urgent now than before, because of the significant quantity of experimental data which need to be explained in terms of both quantum mechanics and special relativity. In unifying the concepts and algorithms of quantum mechanics and special relativity, it is important to realize that the underlying scientific language for both disciplines is that of group theory. The role of group theory in quantum mechanics is well known. The same is true for special relativity. Therefore, the most effective approach to the problem of unifying these two important theories is to develop a group theory which can accommodate both special relativity and quantum mechanics. As is well known, Eugene P. Wigner is one of the pioneers in developing group theoretical approaches to relativistic quantum mechanics. His 1939 paper on the inhomogeneous Lorentz group laid the foundation for this important research line. It is generally agreed that this paper was somewhat ahead of its time in 1939, and that contemporary physicists must continue to make real efforts to appreciate fully the content of this classic work.

Download or read book Relativity written by Asghar Qadir and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1989 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important feature in this book is the simple presentation with details of calculations. It is very easy to follow. Fairly sophisticated calculations are developed very rapidly. The presentation is logical and the detailed coverage makes this book very readable and useful. The contents develop Relativity as a modern theory of motion, starting by placing it in historical perspective and proceeding to show its logical necessity. The development of the Lorentz transformation is given using only one assumption rather than two. Right away in Chapter 3, geometry as required in Special Relativity for extension to General Relativity is introduced. This enables the use of the four-vector formalism of Minkowski. By the end of Chapter 4, the general Lorentz transformations for three-dimensional motion and their relation to four-dimensional boosts have already been explained. In Chapter 5 applications of relevance in Physics are provided. After a brief introduction to elementary electromagnetic theory, it is reformulated as a theory in four-dimensions using tensors in Chapter 6. Finally in Chapter 7, the theory is extended to deal with accelerated motion as ?corrections? to Special Relativity.

Book Synopsis Unitary Representations of the Poincar Group and Relativistic Wave Equations by : Yoshio Ohnuki
Download or read book Unitary Representations of the Poincar Group and Relativistic Wave Equations written by Yoshio Ohnuki and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1988 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to an extensive and systematic study on unitary representations of the Poincar group. The Poincar group plays an important role in understanding the relativistic picture of particles in quantum mechanics. Complete knowledge of every free particle states and their behaviour can be obtained once all the unitary irreducible representations of the Poincar group are found. It is a surprising fact that a simple framework such as the Poincar group, when unified with quantum theory, fixes our possible picture of particles severely and without exception. In this connection, the theory of unitary representations of the Poincar group provides a fundamental concept of relativistic quantum mechanics and field theory.

Download or read book Diagrammatica written by Martinus Veltman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-06-16 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This author provides an easily accessible introduction to quantum field theory via Feynman rules and calculations in particle physics. His aim is to make clear what the physical foundations of present-day field theory are, to clarify the physical content of Feynman rules. The book begins with a brief review of some aspects of Einstein's theory of relativity that are of particular importance for field theory, before going on to consider the relativistic quantum mechanics of free particles, interacting fields, and particles with spin. The techniques learnt in the chapters are then demonstrated in examples that might be encountered in real accelerator physics. Further chapters contain discussions of renormalization, massive and massless vector fields and unitarity. A final chapter presents concluding arguments concerning quantum electrodynamics. The book includes valuable appendices that review some essential mathematics, including complex spaces, matrices, the CBH equation, traces and dimensional regularization. An appendix containing a comprehensive summary of the rules and conventions used is followed by an appendix specifying the full Lagrangian of the Standard Model and the corresponding Feynman rules. To make the book useful for a wide audience a final appendix provides a discussion of the metric used, and an easy-to-use dictionary connecting equations written with different metrics. Written as a textbook, many diagrams, exercises and examples are included. This book will be used by beginning graduate students taking courses in particle physics or quantum field theory, as well as by researchers as a source and reference book on Feynman diagrams and rules.

Book Synopsis Symmetry and the Standard Model by : Matthew Robinson
Download or read book Symmetry and the Standard Model written by Matthew Robinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While theoretical particle physics is an extraordinarily fascinating field, the incredibly fast pace at which it moves along, combined with the huge amount of background information necessary to perform cutting edge research, poses a formidable challenge for graduate students. This book represents the first in a series designed to assist students in the process of transitioning from coursework to research in particle physics. Rather than reading literally dozens of physics and mathematics texts, trying to assimilate the countless ideas, translate notations and perspectives, and see how it all fits together to get a holistic understanding, this series provides a detailed overview of the major mathematical and physical ideas in theoretical particle physics. Ultimately the ideas will be presented in a unified, consistent, holistic picture, where each topic is built firmly on what has come before, and all topics are related in a clear and intuitive way. This introductory text on quantum field theory and particle physics provides both a self-contained and complete introduction to not only the necessary physical ideas, but also a complete introduction to the necessary mathematical tools. Assuming minimal knowledge of undergraduate physics and mathematics, this book lays both the mathematical and physical groundwork with clear, intuitive explanations and plenty of examples. The book then continues with an exposition of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, the theory that currently seems to explain the universe apart from gravity. Furthermore, this book was written as a primer for the more advanced mathematical and physical ideas to come later in this series.
Book Synopsis Group Theory and General Relativity by : Moshe Carmeli
Download or read book Group Theory and General Relativity written by Moshe Carmeli and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only book on the subject of group theory and Einstein's theory of gravitation. It contains an extensive discussion on general relativity from the viewpoint of group theory and gauge fields. It also puts together in one volume many scattered, original works, on the use of group theory in general relativity theory. There are twelve chapters in the book. The first six are devoted to rotation and Lorentz groups, and their representations. They include the spinor representation as well as the infinite-dimensional representations. The other six chapters deal with the application of groups -- particularly the Lorentz and the SL(2, C) groups -- to the theory of general relativity. Each chapter is concluded with a set of problems. The topics covered range from the fundamentals of general relativity theory, its formulation as an SL(2, C) gauge theory, to exact solutions of the Einstein gravitational field equations. The important Bondi-Metzner-Sachs group, and its representations, conclude the book The entire book is self-contained in both group theory and general relativity theory, and no prior knowledge of either is assumed. The subject of this book constitutes a relevant link between field theoreticians and general relativity theoreticians, who usually work rather independently of each other. The treatise is highly topical and of real interest to theoretical physicists, general relativists and applied mathematicians. It is invaluable to graduate students and research workers in quantum field theory, general relativity and elementary particle theory.
