Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Physics - Quantum Physics, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Department of Physics), course: Nanostructure Physics, language: English, abstract: This book contains a comprehensive account of application of WKB method to pure Physics of nanostructures containing single or symmetric double barrier V(x) in their band model in presence of longitudinal magnetic field applied along x direction. It concentrates on effects on transmission coefficient of single and symmetric double barriers by three dimensional electron gas (3DEG). Analytical expressions for longitudinal magnetic field dependent transmission coefficient of single and symmetric double barrier of general shape are obtained first. These general expressions are then used to obtain analytical expressions of longitudinal magnetic field dependent transmission coefficient of single and symmetric double barriers of many different shapes we encounter in studying nanostructure Physics. This is followed by thorough numerical investigation to bring out effects of longitudinal magnetic field on transmission coefficient of all these barriers. Comparisons with standard results where available showed excellent agreements. Results of numerical investigation have been explained completely. The book makes well documented, with thorough calculation and discussion, pure Physics of semiconductor nanostructures.

This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with pure Nanostructure Physics of a Quantum Well (QW) of general shape adjacent to a tunnel barrier of general shape. On the other side of the QW, we have a barrier of semi-infinite thickness. Using WKB approximation method, the book presents thorough and complete analytical calculations leading to 2 transcendental equations obeyed by quasi-bound energy levels of the non-isolated QW. The 2 general equations have been applied to the cases when the tunnel barrier is rectangular, moderately biased rectangular, triangular and Schottky barrier. Thorough numerical investigations have been reported to bring out parametric variations of the energy levels. For some values of tunnel barrier height and width, the energy levels split into doublets. The book contains a thorough introduction to WKB method; the book also contains necessary background on Microelectronics and Nanostructure Physics to enable readers assimilate the book completely. The 1st 3 chapters are introductory while chapter 4 and 5 are exclusive and original contributions of the book.

Book excerpt: Presenting in a coherent and accessible fashion current results in nanomagnetism, this book constitutes a comprehensive, rigorous and readable account, from first principles of the classical and quantum theories underlying the dynamics of magnetic nanoparticles subject to thermal fluctuations.Starting with the Larmor-like equation for a giant spin, both the stochastic (Langevin) equation of motion of the magnetization and the associated evolution (Fokker-Planck) equation for the distribution function of the magnetization orientations of ferromagnetic nanoparticles (classical spins) in a heat bath are developed along with their solution (using angular momentum theory) for arbitrary magnetocrystalline-Zeeman energy. Thus, observables such as the magnetization reversal time, relaxation functions, dynamic susceptibilities, etc. are calculated and compared with the predictions of classical escape rate theory including in the most general case spin-torque-transfer. Regarding quantum effects, which are based on the reduced spin density matrix evolution equation in Hilbert space as is described at length, they are comprehensively treated via the Wigner-Stratonovich formulation of the quantum mechanics of spins via their orientational quasi-probability distributions on a classically meaningful representation space. Here, as suggested by the relevant Weyl symbols, the latter is the configuration space of the polar angles. Hence, one is led, by mapping the reduced density matrix equation onto that space, to a master equation for the quasi-probability evolution akin to the Fokker-Planck equation which may be solved in a similar way. Thus, one may study in a classical-like manner the evolution of observables with spin number ranging from an elementary spin to molecular clusters to the classical limit, viz. a nanoparticle. The entire discussion hinges on the one-to-one correspondence between polarization operators in Hilbert space and the spherical harmonics allied to concepts of spin coherent states long familiar in quantum optics.Catering for the reader with only a passing knowledge of statistical and quantum mechanics, the book serves as an introductory text on a complicated subject where the literature is remarkably sparse.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Astronomy, grade: 1,0, University of Bremen, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: An adaptive mesh refinement simulation of galaxy cluster formation was performed that included the passive evolution of a magnetic field. It was found that structure formation plays an important role in amplifying large-scale magnetic fields and that the magnetic properties of the obtained cluster were in good agreement with recent observations. The initial field was amplified by a factor of up to 1000 during the formation of the cluster, and the field strength was seen to be well correlated with the gas density. We further found a magnetic energy power spectrum that is well described by -5/3 Kolmogorov-type turbulence. Near the accretion shocks on the outskirts of the cluster, the magnetic field is amplified well beyond the value expected from mere compression of gas. Here, shear flows lead to a substantial increase in field strength. Realistic Faraday rotation measures were obtained from the simulation data, which was however not resolved well-enough to allow for a more quantitative analysis.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, grade: 1,3, Vrije University Brussel (Solvay Business School), course: Advanced Technology, language: English, abstract: The magnetic levitation train analysed in this study was developed in Germany by the Transrapid International GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture by Siemens AG and ThyssenKrupp AG, as a means for high speed transportation. First prototypes were presented to the public as early as 1969 and 1979, yet, the first public high-speed maglev track was opened only four years ago in Shanghai, China. Despite the fact that businesspeople like engineers from all sorts of backgrounds speak very highly of the technology, the Shanghai track remains the only commercially operated one thus far.1 Purpose of this paper is to analyse the potential of the maglev train, to assess its strengths and weaknesses, and to spot opportunities as well as threats to the application of this state-of-the-art - or perhaps ahead-of-its-time - technology.

This book was released on 2011-08-05 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Physics - Nuclear Physics, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (-), course: PH.D., language: English, abstract: Wide scope is available to study these aspects of ferrite which at present to our knowledge was not probe by researchers. In relevance to the ever expanding possibilities, and potential that is available with the ferrite materials, the scope of presently undertaken work is designed carefully by selecting suitable ferrite and dopants. A sincere attempt was made to extract fruitful, exhaustive and, systematic information regarding structural, cation distribution, electrical, dielectric and magnetic aspects of the ferrite systems under investigations. In the present study, the properties of nickel ferrites substituted by diamagnetic Zn2+, non-magnetic trivalent In3+ ions and tetravalent Ce4+ ions are studied for various compositions. The properties are investigated with a view to understand the effect of divalent, trivalent and tetravalent substitution in nickel ferrite. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 related to Scope, problem statement, theory of magnetism, ferrites, background, motivation and aim of the present work, properties of the samples under investigations, objective and outline of thesis. Chapter 2, 3 and 4 related to results and discussion of structural, electrical and magnetic properties of Ni1-xZnxFe2O4, NiInxFe2-xO4 and Ni1-2xCexFe2O4 ferrite system respectively. Chapter 5 gives the summary, discussion and conclusion on Zn, In and Ce substituted nickel ferrite. On summarizing the results obtained on Ni-Zn, Ni-In and Ni-Ce spinel ferrites it can be concluded that; • The structural properties are found to be varying in all the three systems. The lattice parameter of Ni ferrite systems increases with increasing valancy of dopants (Zn2+, In3+ and Ce4+). • The other prominent parameter of our structural study i.e. porosity reflects that with tetravalent substitution minimum porosity can be achieved. • The particle size does not show any significant difference in their values when substituted with Zn2+, In3+ and Ce4+. • The band frequency in IR spectra slightly changes with the substitution of Zn2+, In3+ and Ce4+. • The magnetic properties are very much affected as can be seen from the values of saturation magnetization of Zn2+, In3+ and Ce4+ substituted nickel ferrite.
