Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longarm heads to a town called Hardwater to find out why the dying is easy… When hard-livin’ bully Cracker Marner finally ran out of luck, dying came easy. A few shots to the chest by a smaller man with a bigger hat. That’s all anyone at the saloon remembers about the killer. Then in early spring, another stranger bellies up to the same bar and shoots the barkeep at point-blank range…just because he couldn’t “remember.” Now the problem is federal—with Marshal Custis Long on the case. There are two places Longarm can look for answers: Cracker’s hot-tempered widow and his ma. But the hardest question still isn’t who could’ve wanted this unpopular man dead, it’s who could’ve wanted him alive…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1915, when Jennings Cropper Wise was commandant of the Virginia Military Institute, The Long Arm of Lee has never been surpassed as an authoritative study of the Confederate artillery in the Civil War. Volume 1 described the organization and tactics of the field batteries of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia from the time of the Battle of Bull Run through the Maryland invasion. Volume 2, beginning with an account of the Chancellorsville campaign, includes a close look at the Battle of Gettysburg, in which tactical errors made by the Confederate side are reassessed. There was heroism aplenty, not only from generals like J.E.B. Stuart and Stonewall Jackson but also from ordinary artillerymen who fought doggedly and resignedly until the end.

Book Synopsis The Long Arm of Moore's Law by : Cyrus C. M. Mody
Download or read book The Long Arm of Moore's Law written by Cyrus C. M. Mody and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How, beginning in the mid 1960s, the US semiconductor industry helped shape changes in American science, including a new orientation to the short-term and the commercial. Since the mid 1960s, American science has undergone significant changes in the way it is organized, funded, and practiced. These changes include the decline of basic research by corporations; a new orientation toward the short-term and the commercial, with pressure on universities and government labs to participate in the market; and the promotion of interdisciplinarity. In this book, Cyrus Mody argues that the changes in American science that began in the 1960s co-evolved with and were shaped by the needs of the “civilianized” US semiconductor industry. In 1965, Gordon Moore declared that the most profitable number of circuit components that can be crammed on a single silicon chip doubles every year. Mody views “Moore's Law” less as prediction than as self-fulfilling prophecy, pointing to the enormous investments of capital, people, and institutions the semiconductor industry required—the “long arm” of Moore's Law that helped shape all of science. Mody offers a series of case studies in microelectronics that illustrate the reach of Moore's Law. He describes the pressures on Stanford University's electrical engineers during the Vietnam era, IBM's exploration of alternatives to semiconductor technology, the emergence of consortia to integrate research across disciplines and universities, and the interwoven development of the the molecular electronics community and associated academic institutions as the vision of a molecular computer informed the restructuring of research programs.

Book Synopsis International Cell Biology 1980–1981 by : Hans G. Schweiger
Download or read book International Cell Biology 1980–1981 written by Hans G. Schweiger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 1045 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September, 1976, the International Federation for Cell Biology held its first congress in Boston. On this occasion Berlin was chosen as the site for the next congress. This meant an acknowledgement and at the same time a heavy burden for the still young European Cell Biology Organization, which repre sents a junction of European societies and groups for cell biology. In practical terms, this meant that the members of the young and, compared to the Ame rican Society for Cell Biology, small German Society for Cell Biology had to do a good deal of the organizing of the Cell Biology Congress. This is an op portunity for me, as Chairman of the Organizing Committee, and also on be half of the German Society for Cell Biology, to express my gratitude to all those who have actively participated in the preparations for this Cell Biology Congress. The success of the Congress in Berlin was to a significant extent due to their work. In particular, I would like to especially thank the Secretary General ofECBO Werner Franke, Heidelberg, as well as the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Peter Giesbrecht, Berlin, for the excellent job they did. The Congress in Berlin proved to be significantly larger than that in Boston in 1976. The number of abstracts increased from 1200 to more than 1800. They have been published in the European Journal of Cell Biology. In a simi lar way the number of symposia and workshops expanded.
