Book excerpt: Existing long time series efforts can be readily augmented by addition of existing sensors, enhancing scope and impact. Significant benefits would result from multidisciplinary measurements to document long-term trends in physical as well as other variables. Standard observations as well as a diversity of approaches and measurements should comprise the suite of long-term measurements. Sites for long-term observations should be selected to define processes, represent major and diverse oceanographic systems, and to document pristine as well as stressed systems. The initial rationale for sites and observed properties must be clearly defined to avoid monitoring for monitoring's sake. In the long term, three-dimensional zones ('corridors') of long time series measurements might be created. Long time series measurements should be supplemented with process and modeling studies to ensure appropriate rationale and to provide a regional understanding for the site-specific observations. The Coastal Ocean Processes Program (CoOP) might provide some of these studies.
Book Synopsis Moored Time Series Measurements of the Vertical Structure of Optical Properties in the Coastal Ocean by : Tommy Dickey
Download or read book Moored Time Series Measurements of the Vertical Structure of Optical Properties in the Coastal Ocean written by Tommy Dickey and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have collected a remarkable data set with a very high percentage of data return. The eye of Hurricane Edouard passed within roughly 80 km of our mooring on September 1-2, 1996 and soon after Hurricane Hortense passed within roughly 250 km of our mooring on September 14, 1996. With the passage of Edouard, the mixed layer deepened very rapidly with temperature differences from the top to bottom (68m) decreasing from 12 deg C to about 2 deg C. Sediment resuspension was dramatic as well and is easily seen in all optical data, including the AC-9 data. The resuspension event is evident from 68m clear up to the 10m depthZ Surprisingly, Hortense's passage resulted in significant sediment resuspension despite its relatively great distance from the mooring site (please see web site http://www.icess.ucsb.edu/opl/cmo.html).

Book Synopsis Real-time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms by : Babin, Marcel
Download or read book Real-time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms written by Babin, Marcel and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.

This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this document, the first three years of a time series of bio-optical marine and atmospheric measurements are presented and analyzed. These measurements were performed from an oceanographic tower in the northern Adriatic Sea within the framework of the Coastal Atmosphere and Sea Time Series (CoASTS) project, an ocean color calibration and validation activity. The data set collected includes spectral measurements of the in-water apparent (diffuse attenuation coefficient, reflectance, Q-factor, etc.) and inherent (absorption and scattering coefficients) optical properties, as well as the concentrations of the main optical components (pigment and suspended matter concentrations). Clear seasonal patterns are exhibited by the marine quantities on which an appreciable short-term variability (on the order of a half day to one day) is superimposed. This short-term variability is well correlated with the changes in salinity at the surface resulting from the southward transport of freshwater coming from the northern rivers. Concentrations of chlorophyll alpha and total suspended matter span more than two orders of magnitude. The bio-optical characteristics of the measurement site pertain to both Case-I (about 64%) and Case-II (about 36%) waters, based on a relationship between the beam attenuation coefficient at 660nm and the chlorophyll alpha concentration. Empirical algorithms relating in-water remote sensing reflectance ratios and optical components or properties of interest (chlorophyll alpha, total suspended matter, and the diffuse attenuation coefficient) are presented.Hooker, Stanford B. Book Synopsis Enabling Ocean Research in the 21st Century by : National Research Council
Download or read book Enabling Ocean Research in the 21st Century written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-11-14 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the importance of the oceans to society grows, so does the need to understand their variation on many temporal and spatial scales. This need to understand ocean change is compelling scientists to move beyond traditional expeditionary modes of investigation. Observing systems will enable the study of processes in the ocean basins over varying timescales and spatial scales, providing the scientific basis for addressing important societal concerns such as climate change, natural hazards, and the health and viability of living and non-living resources along our coasts and in the open ocean. The book evaluates the scientific and technical readiness to move ahead with the establishment of a research-driven ocean observatory network, and highlights outstanding issues. These issues include the status of planning and development, factors that affect the timing of construction and installation, the cost and requirements for maintenance and operations, needs for sensor development and data management, the impact on availability of ships and deep submergence facilities, and the role of research-based observatories within national and international operational ocean observing systems being developed and implemented.
