Book Synopsis Assessing the Short- and Long-Term Health Effects of Decompression Sickness Among U.S. Navy Divers by : A. Hoiberg
Download or read book Assessing the Short- and Long-Term Health Effects of Decompression Sickness Among U.S. Navy Divers written by A. Hoiberg and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study identified the short- and and long-term health effects among U.S. Navy divers who suffered decompression sickness (DCS) during more than a decade (n = 362) and compared their hospitalization rates with a matched sample of divers who had no recorded diving accidents (n = 1,086). Of the 332 divers included in the analyses, results identified 251 individuals (75.6%) whose records contained no diving-related medical events after the DCS incident; no deaths and only three physical disabilities were attributed to DCS or diving. DCS divers had significantly higher rates than controls for total hospitalizations, symptoms and headache, diseases of the arteries and veins, and diseases of the pancreas, intestines, and gallbladder. No specific disease or time interval was identified as attributable to the DCS incident. Subsequent research should include medical information from outpatients' records and divers' questionnaires to determine with greater confidence the health risks that divers face as they pursue this Navy occupation. Keywords include: Longitudinal study, U.S. Navy divers, Decompression sickness, Hospitalization rates, and Physical disabilities.

Book Synopsis The Workshop on Long-Term Health Hazards of Diving with Regard to the Central Nervous System by : J. Hallenbeck
Download or read book The Workshop on Long-Term Health Hazards of Diving with Regard to the Central Nervous System written by J. Hallenbeck and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the 1950's called attention to the possible existence of a chronic progressive encephalomyelopathy that occurred as a result of repeated decompressions from raised environmental pressures. This neurologic disorder could occur in the absence of decompression sickness, but was more common in individuals with a history of prior decompression sickness. In this presentation the general problem of chronic progressive encephalomyelopathy is addressed on three levels: (1) cases of central nervous system degeneration occurring in individuals exposed to repeated decompressions without any history of preceding decompression sickness or air embolism; (2) individuals incurring central nervous system damaging decompression sickness or air embolism during the course of a decompression from raised environmental pressure, and subsequently, developing chronic progressive central nervous system degeneration despite refraining from further diving; (3) individuals afflicted by decompression sickness or air embolism who developed chronic progressive central nervous system degeneration in the setting of continued diving. Although ischemia appears to play a major role in neuraxis damage in decompression sickness and the analogous process of stroke in humans does not generally show chronic progression, it does not seem possible to confirm or deny the occurrence of this chronic progressive encephalomyclopathy at present.

Book Synopsis Health Risks of U.S. Navy Diving by : Anne Hoiberg
Download or read book Health Risks of U.S. Navy Diving written by Anne Hoiberg and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report was to summarize and evaluate in one volume studies that examined the short- and long-term health effects associated with being a U.S. Navy diver during the time from January 1968 through December 1979. Results showed that enlisted male divers (n= 11,584) had significantly higher hospitalization rates than controls for environmentally induced disorders as well as joint disorders, respiratory diseases, and deflected nasal septum at ages 23-28. Diving officers had higher hospitalization rates than other officers for joint and neurological disorders. Other potential diving-related health risks included musculoskeletal disorders among UDT/SEAL divers and respiratory diseases and pain symptomatology among master divers. The aftereffects of decompression sickness consisted of the two diagnostic clusters of symptoms and headache and disorders of the arteries and veins. Three lives were lost to air embolism, and three divers suffered ear and hearing problems because of a barotrauma incident. Other results showed that inexperienced enlisted divers and officers as well as nongraduates from training were at increased risk of being hospitalized for stress-related conditions, especially alcohol/drug abuse.
